Well they say they've lived through Ben so they'll live through anything ?

IMHO, although Ben's mother seems very sweet and obviously loves Ben beyond words, she also seems like the more outspoken and "controlling" one in the relationship and Ben's father more quiet. I can see why she would feel like JoJo's more her type.

I think everyone is allowed an opinion, including Ben's mum. I just dont think that opinion should have much weight on Ben's decision unless it raised a huge red flag about the other girl's character.

I also think mums and their sons have a special relationship, but one that can be a little "blind" or idealised in some aspects. IMO (as a mum with a son)

Also someone reserved is not going to make as big of an impact on a first impression. JoJo may have been much more talkative. The real first impression on Ben is what really mattered and that first impression for Ben was Lauren.

Could even explain Ben's attraction to Jojo. She reminded him of his mom . Doesn't mean he'd pick her because of that. That all goes in the tangible list imo. Lauren has the intangibles that Ben loves about her.

Perhaps the question is : who's first impression was more important, Ben's or his mom's? His mom was probably put in the position of making a forced choice- something that IRL she would not do (my children are approaching that age- heck, are Ben's age and older- they will be bringing only one home... who I hope to embrace wholeheartedly and never have to say whether I preferred someone to another). His mom is clearly not happy (tears) to have to state an opinion IMO.

Not all mums. My MIL threaten to lock me in the closet till I came to my senses about marrying her son.
