Chris Harrison On the 'Bachelor' Finale: 'More Juan Pablo Spoke, the Worse He Looked'
Last night's episode was intense. Could you have predicted all that drama?
No. That was the weird part. Usually as the host and as a producer on the show we know exactly for the most part what we're going to get. The show has its beats: Sean sits down, and it'll be difficult with Lindsay but it's not a huge deal; and there's the coronation of he and Catherine. Last night, going into the show, I had no idea how it was going to go from start to finish. I really had no clue what I was going to get and it really started with the audience... not knowing what their reaction was going to be. It made for an exciting, fun night for me.
Let's start with Clare. For the most part, our readers applauded her for standing up for herself. Did you think she came across well?
I really liked Clare on the show and I found it surprising that she got such a negative rap during the show. That's something I didn't anticipate from our fans, so I was a little taken aback by that. But then last night she redeemed herself. I didn't think she needed to! People saw the real Clare -- a strong, confident, beautiful woman. She did a 180 with the audience. She definitely won everybody back and she stood up for herself and she felt like she did it too late, but I told her, "It's never too late. You did it when you needed to."
'Bachelor' Winner Nikki Ferrell to Haters: 'Be Ashamed of Yourselves'
There's really no other way to put this: Your conversation with Nikki and Juan Pablo was painful to watch. How awkward was it in person?
I wasn't harping on him so much to make him say "I love you," that's kind of irrelevant to me. It was just, things weren't adding up and it was just bizarre. Their body language was telling me one thing and his words were telling me another. It was him. She wasn't allowed or able to speak her mind. I almost felt sorry for her. She was uncomfortable. He was making her uncomfortable, and I assume, I'm hoping at least, it was just an orchestrated event by him to somehow and in some way, get back at me or the show, I don't know what his motivation was for what he pulled last night. That was the most puzzling thing. I really felt like I was sitting here, like Jerry Maguire, saying, "Help me help you. I'm trying to make you look better. Come up with an articulate thought about this woman next to you who has pledged her devotion to you." The more he spoke, the worse he looked. I felt bad for both of them.
Did you expect him to be that antagonistic toward you?
Sadly, I got exactly what I thought I was going to get last night. Some you saw and some you haven't seen [during the show. Things] were a little contentious but I never felt like I was at odds with him. I don't dislike him whatsoever. I wasn't mad at him last night. I was just trying to think, "How can I make this guy articulate his feelings and show his emotions?" ... This guy is not looking good and all he had to do was simply explain that even if he didn't want to say I love you, that's totally fine, but say something. Everybody's invested in this and you came into this with the understanding of what "The Bachelor" is. You can't get away with, "I've never seen the show." He knew exactly what he was getting into. He had trouble embracing being the Bachelor. People take that as an indictment on you and it's not. It doesn't make you a bad person. He had trouble getting into the process.
'The Bachelor' Finale Full Recap: Juan Pablo Chooses Between Nikki and Clare
Do you think Nikki really loves him?
I think she loves him because only a woman who loves a man would've sat there and endured that last night for him. She wanted to speak her mind. She wanted to say more. She was not comfortable and she sat by his side! Only a woman who loves a man would've done what she did. She was a trouper.
Do you think he really loves her?
Yes. I think he's told her but I don't think he wanted to say it [last night].
Your critics are accusing you of being a bully last night. What do you say to those people?
I can't disagree and I can only respect their opinions. That goes to show how great the show is and this is why I love it: I had people telling me how great I was last night and I handled him and he was a bad guy and then I had people telling me I was the worst person in the world and he's great. As usual, the truth lies somewhere in between. I love that it evokes that kind of emotion and that kind of debate. I totally respect that opinion and maybe I was! I have to go back and watch it to see. Maybe I was hard on him. I don't know. I went into that with the intention of being fair and letting him speak his mind, but after what Nikki said, I thought I was being fair in getting him to reciprocate some emotion.
Some people noted that you walked away from him as the show went to commercial. What was that about?
Honestly, I had a short break and I was so parched, I ran over to get some water. I just walked five feet to get my water bottle and then I ran right back on stage.
What are the odds that Juan Pablo and Nikki make it down the aisle or even get engaged?
Stranger things have happened, right? That's the beauty of the show and what it's about. Who can predict? The silliest thing you can do is bet against them. Maybe they will last forever and honestly, I hope they do. I wish them nothing but the best. People took last night as I'm angry, but I'm not. I just wish he'd embraced us a little more.
C'mon. Seriously?
I was the guy that would've bet a million dollars that Ali and Roberto would get married and then they broke up. Who knows? It's a crazy world out there!
Not buying that you wanted to help him, Chris. Not for a second.
:alltens: and to say that he wasn't angry?!? "Help me help you...I was trying to make you look better"??? :LMBO:

Bachelor Juan Pablo Picks Nikki Ferrell: Former Bachelor Stars, Celebrities React With Shock, Disgust

She got the final rose, but not the ring! Juan Pablo Galavis chose Nikki Ferrell over Clare Crawley on the Monday, March 10 finale of the Bachelor Season 18. The 32-year-old Venezuelan-born single dad wasn't ready to propose to Nikki, however, and instead asked the 26-year-old pediatric nurse if she would simply accept his final rose.
His commitment issues seemed even more pronounced during the After the Final Rose special on ABC, in which Juan wasn't even ready to say he loves Nikki, even though she said she's "absolutely" in love with him.
During the last episode and after show special, former Bachelorette Jillian Harris and celebrity fan Sarah Hyland shared their disgust on Twitter and Facebook to the shocking finale. Read on for their messages, and others:
Jillian Harris: "Ugh. I don't even know what to think about that #bachelor finale. My heart hurts a little for everyone on that season right now."
Sarah Hyland: "I knew from day 1. I HATE #JuanPablo sooo much. I feel awful for every girl, including the one with the final rose."
Haylie Duff: "Wait, what?! So many thoughts... #Bachelor #FinalRose."
Jenny Mollen: "Getting engaged to Nikki is like getting engaged to a cardboard cut out of a chick. #Bachelor."
Ali Fedotowsky: "Whoaa! I'm shocked by what Juan Pablo said to Claire. Hold your head high Claire. I respect the way you handled that #Bachelor."
Dave Annable: "#TrueDetective finale last night. #Bachelor finale tonight. It's time for a long look in the mirror."
Jason Biggs: "So . . . He basically mentioned his daughter and played a f--king song on his iPod and she's back in?? #TheBachelor."
J.P. Rosenbaum: "Wait a second!!!! We don't HAVE TO propose?!?!?!? #TheBachelor."
Ashley Rosenbaum: "I'm so shocked over this all, I'm tweetless. #TheBachelor."
Trista Sutter: "I've loved @Clare_Crawley all season. Tonight solidifies that love, & respect. Heartbreak sucks but I KNOW better things are in her future!!"
Courtney Robertson: "Congratulations @JuanPaGalavis & my favorite @Nikki_Ferrell You're free at last."
Tenley Molzahn: "For the record, I'm not upset about no proposal, in fact, I respect that as they still have tons to get to know about one another, BUT Juan Pablo just did not show any respect tonight, especially towards the people that have walked this very unique & exciting experience with him for several months. Whoa. This was the weirdest ?Bachelor? ever!"
Molly Mesnick: "Ugh . . . I feel so sad abt everything Bachelor tonight. The hate, the tears, the awkwardness. We will talk ALL about this in tomorrows podcast."
Sean Lowe: "This is painful to watch. #TheBachelor."
Catherine Lowe: "This is painful to watch. #TheBachelor."

Trista Sutter on Juan Pablo and Nikki's Bachelor Finale Mistakes: 'Listen to Your Gut!'

(Courtesy ABC)
Trista Sutter first captured out hearts as the runner-up on the first season of The Bachelor and then cemented her America’s sweetheart status as the first ever Bachelorette. Her romance— and ten-year marriage—with Ryan Sutter endures as one of the most (if not THE most) touching relationships of reality television.
Sutter put that hard-earned knowledge–as well as stories from others and lots of research–into her new book about gratitude, Happily Ever After: The Life-Changing Power of a Grateful Heart (Da Capo Press) and will be blogging every week about Juan Pable Galavis‘s Bachelor season for Parade.com. Read on for more from Trista and follow her on Twitter here. Catch The Bachelor every Monday on ABC at 8 p.m.
For those who tuned in to The Bachelor finale last night, I assume you are feeling just as baffled and unsettled as I am. I know Chris Harrison is!
I obviously can’t speak for everyone who watches the show, but I would wager that a great majority of the viewers (including myself) tune in because they are fans of love. They can escape the issues in their reality for an hour or two each week and watch a modern-day fairy tale unfold. A happy ending is the hope, but even as a proud member of the Bachelor Nation family and someone who has experienced it from both sides, I realistically understand that that can’t always be the final outcome. I do know, though, that if you are reading this blog, you have most likely landed here knowing that this has not been the place to come for a recap. ABC.com is the perfect place for that. Instead, I figure I should use the time away from my family wisely and offer up my insight via a Top 3.
To say that it would be easy to purely be critical about last night at Juan Pablo’s expense would be an understatement. Even though it was disturbing, I hope that it was eye-opening for anyone in a relationship, wanting to be in a relationship, or just starting or ending a relationship. How so? By taking JP and Nikki’s mistakes and learning from them.
Here you go: Top 3 most crucial relationship components learned directly from Juan Pablo and Nikki’s mistakes during the finale.
1. Be respectful.
Unfortunately, a lack of respect seems to have been a consistent theme throughout the season for Juan Pablo and last night was no exception.
• Instead of whispering sweet nothings about how beautiful she was or how lucky he was to have her there with him, he decided to use private time with Clare to tell her how horny he was… or something to that effect.
• Instead of opening up to Clare during their final date and sharing his concerns about their ups and downs then stringing her along by talking about their future in Sacramento and having babies, he decides to keep it to himself until she’s standing across from him professing her belief in him and love for him. THEN he has the gall to go in for a disingenuous hug without letting her process her broken heart.
• Instead of choosing to tell Nikki how ecstatic he is to start a new adventure with her away from prying eyes of cameramen and producers, he tells her that he is 100 percent positive that he does not want to propose to her. What woman wants to hear that? NOT ONE! Especially one that is hoping for you to get down on one knee.
It is one thing to speak from the heart in the interest of honesty and entirely another to speak your mind in a disrespectful way without compassion or understanding. Honesty is a huge component in successful relationships, but you must choose your words wisely in order to prevent hurtful results and it seems that there is no filter for JP. It makes me wonder how he is with his daughter. Does he tell her she is horrible at something she is struggling with, in the interest of honesty, or does he tell her how proud he is that she is trying her best and that’s all she can do, in the interest of compassion? My hope is that he will take this opportunity and consciously choose kindness over honesty no matter whom he is speaking to… not only for his own benefit, but for the happiness of Nikki as well as Camila and all the people in his life.
2. Be willing to listen and compromise.
Relationships are a two-way street. Juan Pablo’s last moments of air-time seemed very one-sided and narcissistic. It is true that The Bachelor and The Bachelorette may focus on a girl or a guy putting their heart on the line to find their happily ever after, but it’s really about two people figuring out if they are compatible and can envision a fulfilling future together, as a couple. It’s not about whether someone fits best in the Bachelor or Bachelorette’s life, but if the two would be a good fit in a new life together. During the final rose ceremony, he said things like:
“You are here because I wanted you to be here.”
“I have been very honest since the beginning to everybody and at some point, people’s are going to go home.”
“Will you accept my final rose?” (heavy emphasis on “my”)
Then, during the “After the Final Rose” special, JP said “I’m not going to say that” when asked if he was in love with Nikki. To me, if he isn’t feeling it, he shouldn’t say it (and he definitely shouldn’t propose), but she’s been professing her love for him for weeks now and he had to know that she was anticipating SOME reciprocation of her feelings. All she got was “I like you a lot” *wink* “A LOT”. If she were in high school, maybe that would be satisfying. As a father and grown man, he needs to step up to the plate and meet her halfway. I’m not sure what that looks like, but it does not include a wink.
3. Listen to your gut!
When Juan Pablo asked Nikki to accept his final rose, she paused. Not only that, though, the look on her face could be used as the picture of disappointment. On what she was anticipating to be the best day of her life, there shouldn’t have been any room for disappointment. There should’ve been happiness and toasts and giddy excitement about the future. As always, there was lots of kissing, but I wonder if that is all Nikki wants from the relationship? Was she worried that she would lose him if she spoke up about not getting what she needed? Was he able to ease the concerns that caused her to end their final night in tears just the night before?
I don’t know Nikki and I don’t know that she wants to know me, but what I do hope as someone who feels strangely maternal towards all the people that travel along the same crazy reality show journey that I once did, is that she needs to ask herself those questions. If she digs deep for the truth, answers them from the heart, and trusts her intuition, she’ll know where she is meant to be. I just hope that she finds her life’s true happiness, whether that is with Juan Pablo or someone waiting in the wings.
Now, I know it’s a Top 3, but I have to mention one thing that was clearly not a mistake… the way Clare stood up for herself!! I don’t know Clare either, but as the grandmother/godmother/old-fogie of the Bachelor/ette bunch, I am SO proud of her!! Believe in yourself from here on out girl and never settle for someone who isn’t going to always make you feel respected, appreciated, and loved!
Onward and upward! Congratulations to Andi on becoming the next Bachelorette! If you need someone to chat with, I have a feeling you could find me! :) Until her season, you can find me on Twitter or Instagram @tristasutter or on my website, tristasutter.com and thanks for stopping by.

Just look at Twitter, they are pretty much ALL upset with JP. I am sure Mr and Mrs Mesnick will be the only ones who aren't... That's kinda their thing.
Be sure to have a listen. These guys are fearless and unfiltered re: TPTB's handling of it

Re: The Bachelor 18 Spoilers/Speculation - Media - Discussion
^^ Yeah I know they love to do that(and they are insightful, though they should be taken with a grain of salt), but it's probably pretty one sided, no? I guess they just keep saying edits, edits, edits, no?.... Or did they also acknowledge that what JP is doing is just ridiculous at this point?
IMO, the Mesnicks struggle to understand that not all people have the same experience as they did.... and let's be honest, they too milked their opportunities as much as they could and played along when the whole switch fiasco was done on ATFR..

I think their take on it was pretty balanced. Can't wait for part #2.
