Thanks for the kind words.
Maybe somebody here knows the ins and outs of SM promoting and can enlighten me on what kind of money there is to be made. If it's a lot, perhaps this old dog might be able to learn a few new tricks!
Think about traditional home parties. I have hosted and attended numerous home parties over my lifetime. Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Lia Sophia, Candle Lite, Garden Party, etc, etc, etc. I have agreed to host a gathering at my home, sent out invitations to myr friends, products have been showcased, purchases were made, and as a host I earned free products or a certain percentage off the price of my own purchases. The company utilized me, an everyday person, to be the one to showcase these items in my home (thus cutting down on company overhead), friends bonded during this social interaction and over their shared interest in these products, free or reduced-price promotional items were earned, and the consultants earned a commission on party sales. In fact, unlike the SM promoting, with the home party there is possible awkwardness to accept an invitation to a gathering you're not interested in attending or any obligation for your friends to feel like they need to spend money and purchase something just to be polite. With the SM promoting, I imagine there is less awkwardness or obligation to buy.
So, if I'm going to rag on somebody promoting an item via a photo on their SM, then I guess I'm going to have to rag on myself for having been a host of a home party or two.

Yeah, I have to admit, I alway chose not to hostess or be a part of those home selling parties. Not my thing.

So I interpreted the use of the term "normal" above to mean being famous... being recognised and having your life available for public consumption is not the norm... Fame certainly does not appeal to me at all... but I don't begrudge anyone who wants it, uses it and benefits (at the cost of their personal privacy)... To each their own really.

Yes, but you can see the parallel that I'm trying to draw between New School SM Promoting and Old School Home Parties, right? Both involve everyday people promoting products on their home turf and in exchange receiving free product or cash off of their own purchase. In fact SM Promoting, if it pays cash, is the better option, IMO. Instead of getting the free Jello Mold, you can get cold hard cash.

So here's what I think. It's okay to enjoy the opportunities for a little while. But after a certain amount of time... time runs out. You can't make a living forever shilling things on instagram, unless you have a trust fund. So you can either get a regular job, or find a way to keep the fame going in a more long-term regular manner (i.e. people like Brooks doing AfterBuzz/podcasts/etc. and Graham Bunn with his radio show, Michelle Money with local Utah TV, Jordan with the SEC Network gig, Jesse Palmer on ESPN, Ben/Lauren with their reality show, Ali with her entertainment gigs, Sean hosting After Paradise this summer, etc.).
I think it will be interesting to see what direction Nick ends up taking. And I don't think it will necessarily matter if his pick comes off as "fame-chasing" or not. Lauren came off as too-normal and she's continuing on with reality TV. Deanna seemed to want nothing but the fame, and she seems to have faded into normal life. I think the couples that have it most "right" are JP/Ashley and Chris/Des, but what's right for one person isn't what's right for everyone.

In Nick's recent podcast interview with Juliet Litman, he talked about how he can go back to Salesforce at any time when all this "yolo-ing" (his words) runs out.
It's why for Nick, I respect the fact that he calls the fame/tv/modeling/etc stuff (what it is for him) as "yolo-ing" because he is fully aware that it is temporary as he has said.
Because Nick has a degree and skills already that are marketable I think that this foundation he set a long time ago will make it easy for him to get another job (software sales is not going anywhere) when the yolo-ing dries up and even perhaps use his experiences combined with his skillset/degree for something else down the road.

Re: Bachelor 21 - Nick Viall - General Discussion - *Sleuthing Spoilers* #2
I do love your posts Mia. And I ask myself the same questions, mostly ... What makes the difference for me how he (or anyone I follow) leads his life? First I deal with my own expectations regarding Nick and then with what those expectations actually represent in terms of my life? Often I've noticed that I was projecting the "perfect outcome" on a "stranger", when the reality was that I wasn't in the best place myself. Like, I have my degree, my job and it's not "it", I want to change, but I have my own doubts and fears and insecurities how to proceed. Despite the work, I still need the help of my parents occasionally when my paychecks are delayed. It's not a perfect situation nor a great economy for small businesses at the moment. So seeing someone making a living "yoloing" it's irritating ... but then again ... I wouldn't mind doing it if I only could ... knowing myself I know it's not for me.MiaHawk wrote:I am going to be completely honest here. My knee jerk reaction may be to look at Nick or somebody else who appears on this show, see them promoting items on SM, and be turned off by it. Then, I stop, take a deep breath, and ask myself What is it that you are opposed to? What do you find distasteful? Often times after thinking about it, I decide it doesn't bother me. Other times it still does. **snipped**
So unless I hear Nick complain about his life or make promises of what he's going to do and not deliver or use other people to make rich with no consideration ... I guess I'm not bothered with what he does in LA. In 16 hours long active day (considering 8 h sleep) ... if he posts 2 "sponsored" IG pics and tweets to reach more people and get noticed (for whatever scope he has up his sleeve) ... and goes to some paid event for E-celebrities ... I'll still be doing my job with all my problems ... and luckily I'm not paying his bills, but I wish someone would pay mine for me.
Oh, and talking about complaints ... I don't watch the Kardashians, but few years ago while clicking through channels I saw one moment of history ... if I recall correctly, Kim was thrown into the sea by her (then) boyfriend (with a full make-up on) while she was on a holiday at some exotic location with all her family. Once back on a dock she started to cry and criticize the stupid act of her soon-to-be fiance ... because she lost 75K worth diamond earring. (moment of silence) I had to switch the channel and never look that "geniality" of reality show again.
Mia ... about SM promotion posts ... IDK for sure, but in Italy for example some public people get 200-600 EUR on a IG post, depending on a deal (and how many posts they have to make) ... I assume in USA the prices are higher.
Comfort Zone is just a prison of our own making. / I hope you dance.

Re: Bachelor 21 - Nick Viall - General Discussion - *Sleuthing Spoilers* #2
Nick in certainly entitled to remain in "show biz" in whatever form he chooses in order to support himself; of course, the trade off with being in the public eye is that one has to be prepared to be "judged" by fans and take the negative with the positive comments. Now that this formula has become a staple that is here to stay for the foreseeable future (pretty young people appearing on reality shows and then attempting to leverage their "fame" into money-making ventures), I guess it's not surprising that we are now also dissecting the motives and justifications for the ones who pursue this option.
In Nick's case, my curiosity is roused because when he entered the reality arena, he was already somewhat older than many and supposedly had already established a very successful career not connected to show biz, which is a rarity among contestants. I'm not at all surprised when the 20 somethings give up their stagnant jobs in order to try to find that financial windfall by hawking products or their pretty faces, and showing up wherever the money is. I'm more surprised and skeptical when someone like Nick does it (I would feel the same way about JPR, Brad Womack, and the handful of others who actually acquired career credentials and built up an impressive resume prior to being on the show). I guess I could understand it better if Nick seemed to have a plan to leverage his skill set into a media career, the way Jillian and Chris L. have done, although I'm not sure what exactly that would be in his case.
I'm happy to hear that Salesforce is willing to take Nick back if/whenever he chooses to return; that's very unusual in most businesses; as someone who has been in recruiting for many years, I can tell you that strange gaps in resumes can be problematic. I hope if he does decide to go back, they really live up to their promises.
Although we are free to analyze Nick and his motives to our hearts' content now, it will be interesting and informative to see how things play out on his season; will he fall in love, will he pick a "serious" woman, will it last, will he stay in Hollywood, etc. Will our opinions of him have changed drastically based on events on the ground a year from now? Soooo looking forward to finding out, January can't come soon enough.

He also said in that podcast it was actually Salesforce that encouraged him to take the opportunities that came his way. He spoke very highly of them, and how supportive they are towards him. This is further confirmed by the few tweets we came across while sleuthing from Salesforce and Nick. He recognizes this lifestyle is a limited time offer for him. He's going to go with it and I don't blame him.

Re: Bachelor 21 - Nick Viall - General Discussion - *Sleuthing Spoilers* #2
My quick opinion on the great discussion in here is that I think it's cool that people can have fun with social media and make money off it and extroverted people or attention seekers can use it in ways they enjoy. As a private person I'm not into it and glad I'm not a 20something anymore in this age. The selling of stuff doesn't bother me though (although I don't get how it's so lucrative for them) - if they can make money that way, why not.
My problem is more with how many of the cast now seem to want to be models and are using SM as basically a modelling platform and seem to want to promote themselves and be admired and followed for their looks. That is the thing that turns me off. And IMO Nick has done that with the best of them. Becca clearly wanted/wants to be a model IMO. Nick actually became a model. Most of them do it now. Even Caila and Lauren B who seem like grouned, quality people seem to post many, many set up shots or photo shoot shots etc to their SM IMO. And don't even get me started on these filters.
I just liked the old days where people from the show seemed to value more about themselves and their lives than their looks, outfits, makeup and diets JMO. If I think back a few years I can think of most of the top 4 people carrying on with their real lives while grabbing opportunities that might have come up. Now it seems most of the women try to become social media models and make a living off their lifestyle habits versus even a charismatic personality or talent. I wish they would promote themselves for more than their looks. People should be so much more than their physical attractiveness. That goes for Nick too and what he turned into post fame bug IMO. I think it's a whole generational thing but that's the thing about the SM trend that turns me off. And Nick is very close to my age, not so much to a 25 year old so him being part of the social media model and fame chase at his age is a disappointment to me from someone who originally seemed about much more than his looks on Andi's season. JMO.

Relaxing, I don't understand your post. Modeling is an occupation.
A quite lucrative one if I may add. In time. Many times it leads to
other opportunities such as acting etc. I don't see a prob
with making a living off of your good looks, lucky those.
