Re: *No Spoilers* The Bachelor 18 Edit Discussions
Regarding our different finalists... and I am not even considering Kat as a frontrunner.
Chelsie is among my favorites because of her very fun-loving personality. However, I re-watched her date after Clare's winter wonderland one... both mostly with the sound off in order to "read" their body language. The scenes where they looked most intimate are during the bungee jump and during a small part of the Billy Currington concert. They did kiss, but Juan was often looking distracted like he often does with Renee. (I didn't think her date in Vietnam hit a home run.) Juan kept discussing the date more than her. Chelsie kept praising Juan on screen as if she is "selling" him to us. I think she really, really likes him as a boy-pal, but has already made up her mind that she is seeking somebody different than him for herself.
Cassandra's date involved some brief kissing by the side of the boat and at least one far away water shot of them embracing. Yet the evening portion was mostly discussing kids and he wanting her to enjoy her time away from hers so she can learn more about what she wants. His comments about her being an over-protective mommy were likely left in the edit for himself to hear, since he's an over-protective daddy.
I really like Nikki, but I think her edit seems too much of a final two "dumpee" for my comfort. For example, her date strongly resembled Chelsie's:
1.) adventure date having her get over a fear
2.) she and Juan discussing his fears (although she mostly did this on the soccer field earlier anyway)
3.) a dinner scene with them sitting a bit too far apart
4.) Juan counter-acting what Elise said by labeling her a potential wife and caring mother. Elise thought Chelsie was a "little girl" and Nikki was "too negative for children". It felt like his compliments were intended to put Elise in her place. He did NOT say he saw her as a potential wife for himself.
I am also bothered by the fact that he said he was "still thinking about Clare" at the start of Nikki's date. Jillian kept beginning each episode Ed was gone by saying similar "stuff"... and I actually was fooled that season that Reid might have a chance.
Now... if we later see him "getting it on" with Nikki (outside that stupid bubble "thang") like he did Clare... maybe. Right now, I feel Mike Fleiss already spoiled the outcome with his ALMOST-doing-The-Deed with her. Clare stated in the interview that they didn't, but I still don't get the sense that she's worried what the other ladies think... just his daughter and family.
I think Andi and Sharleen are now yin and yang. One is all about "getting physical" and the other is just plain awkward in terms of "physicalness". I re-watched Andi's kissing scenes and there is a bit of awkwardness with her too. I think Litta was hinting a bit that the preview shots in the waterfall are a bit "hot", but I think they look a trifle staged. (Heck! Ben Flajnik was pinning Ashley H. down during his last-chance-date a day before she proposed to JP, so you know they have to go through the motions to have a show.) Mind you, I still have to see Andi's date on Monday to be sure.
Although these two are potential Bachelorettes-in-the-making, my funny little "vibe" is that Renee is the one Mike Fleiss personally wants. Yes, the concept of a mother as the lead may be "old hat" thanks to Emily, but her introduction in episode #1 involved a lot of sports activity... suggesting the types of dates they like an 'ette to partake in.
Yeah... I still have to stick to Clare this season unless she hands Camilla a hand grenade on screen. Many here don't think she's stepmommy material, but that is essentially what the editors WANT you to think right now. I still heard him say "our daughter" in his talk with her, during the whole "setting a good example for her" business. Whether that was intentional or by accident, the editors still left it in with no mention of his ex.
Just look at the dude on night #1... he is lost in The Void.

I think the only contestant who did NOT comment on the Clare/Juan relationship this episode was Renee (who did in a previous one instead). In fact, I don't recall any single episode of this franchise jam-packing so many comments about just one relationship.
A quick rundown... coming from our crop of storytellers.
Kelly: Here's the thing about Clare. She doesn't have many friends in the house, so whenever he says "pair up", everyone has a friend and Clare doesn't. For the first time in everyone's life, having no friends is an advantage.
Andi: I was frustrated just coming here this morning to this date and seeing another 1 on 1 date in front of my eyes basically. Annoying... I'm pissed, frustrated... yeah.
Sharleen: Basically the eight of us and a 1 on 1 date.
Chelsie: I've had a really good date today, but... thanks to Clare... it has been with Alli. Juan Pablo has been, like, "around" my date, but me and Alli have had a really romantic morning.
Back to Kelly: Clare got a lot of 1 on 1 time today because she took opportunities to be with Juan Pablo. Clare knows what she wants and she is here to get it. (cue shot of Juan eating his meal) Can we hate her for that? (eye roll) I mean, we can... but...
Kat to Clare and Juan looking embarrassed: We could really see you from the bushes. We saw it from the scenic route.
Alli: Today's date... it was wonderful, even if, at times, it felt like I was interrupting Clare's 1 on 1 date.
Chelsie: He had a TON of time with Clare this morning. A TON of time, so for him to grab Clare first, it seemed like... well, we're still sitting here on Clare's 1 on 1 date with Juan Pablo.
Kat to the others: I don't think he had to take her first.
Andi: I definitely think Juan Pablo gravitates towards Clare. It doesn't feel good to say that, but it's the truth!
Chelsie: We all want him to notice us and it is rough to see him notice someone else the whole day. (later) You can't blame her, but coming from our perspective, we're just discouraged.
Kelly: Should we just take the rose down there and give it to her? (later) You think they've made it to second base yet?
Danielle: Was anyone on the last date with Clare? Was it the same? (Kelly says she made it about "her" differently. and Kat asks "Are we seeing a theme?")
Nikki: Clare comes back from her 1 on 1 time from Juan Pablo and they are not, like, hand and hand, arm and arm. I feel, like, there's a little bit of tension between them. I have no idea what's going on. (later) We got a very sombre vibe from him. Something bad is happening.
Danielle: I'm really confused what is going on with Clare. She has a rose so I am thinking it has nothing to do with Juan Pablo. (later) I don't know what's going on with Clare and Juan Pablo. You can tell she's been crying when coming back to the group, so... I don't know what's going on.
Cassandra asking Kat: Is she really crying or does she really have bad allergies?
Andi: Juan Pablo spent more time with Clare than anybody else and she already has a rose... and let's not forget that three people are going home. This is the biggest cut that we've had since the very first night and, for Clare's sake, what is there to possibly be dramatic about?
There are a couple of interesting visuals in this next scene that might be good ones for our expert Litta to freezeframe. Not sure of the actual "when" of it since there is so much lop and chop during that whole pre-RC section. (When he grabs Andi for alone time earlier, the ladies instantly play "musical couch position".)
Juan to the ladies: How's it goin?
Kat responds: We've lost Miss Clare Bear. Is she on her way?
Juan: Probably.
Kat: Probably?
Cassandra (watching Juan and Clare a bit later): This is, like, super awkward.
The body language speaks volumes here. Not sure if these links work, but maybe I am not alone in seeing what I am seeing? Two people are trying their best not to look at each other in front of the others. Juan even rubs his eyes for no real practical reason.

On to a different topic... Renee's date.
It has been quite a while since I felt so "pushed" to like a candidate. Not that it is hard, since she is extremely likeable. Yet Andi is shown to be fussy about not getting 1 on 1 time, Sharleen looks like she's constantly seeking the nearest Exit sign and Nikki's edit has... fortunately... made a nice turnaround to make her a worthy top 3 candidate. Yet all three ladies probably need a little more something-something done to their edits to make them viable Bachelorette candidates. Perhaps we will get it later in the season. I think the only real problem with Nikki is that many besides me see her too much like a past 'ette, Ali F.
I know. I know. We have had Jason, Emily and now Juan. Why another parent? Well... Renee's kid is, after all, eight and busy at school. All her F1 has to do is play Big Brother and pick him up at soccer games. They also show her as a very sports oriented gal. The only problem is that we haven't seen her on any stunts like Chelsie and Nikki's, not that it matters. We didn't see Sean doing many stunts on Emily's season and his own show resembled The Amazing Race. Even Desie got a stunt on her Sean date, but her only high-rise adventure was with Kasey in episode #3. Renee even looks like a composite of Barbara Bel Geddes, Karen Grassle and Shirley Jones... the ultimate TV Land Dream Wife.
What I find most amusing about Andi is that she looks like she's fed up with this show. She does a couple PI sessions in front of a lantern and stony wall. Not sure if these are shot in Vietnam or New Zealand, but she discusses "sucking face" with Juan (Sorry Mother) in this setting. However, Juan's comments about Clare being "on fire... en llamas... en llamas" are also spoken here. (Unless there's some splice and dice and he's talking about somebody else... like Andi. LOL!) Talk about feeling "used" even by the editors in their selection of PI settings!
Andi is furious she didn't get the rose on the group date, but Nikki laughs when wondering if she'll get it on her 1 on 1 since, had she been on a group date, she knows she would get it again. Nikki humorously reminds me of Carly in BURNING LOVE, knowing fully well she is stuck on this show for a loooooong while regardless of how she feels for him. Not that I am saying Nikki is just like that character. I do think she likes-likes Juan. She keeps saying she wants more time with him and get to know him better, but she also tells Renee how disappointed Andi was not getting the date as if she feels Andi wanted it more than her.
That date was quite interesting to watch from a body language stand point. He does seem smitten by her, touching her quite a bit... at least more so than Renee, Sharleen and most of the others. Yet she's hardly reciprocating. In her lengthy discussion with him after the cave climb, she goes on and on about what she wants in a relationship, but fails to include Juan in the scenario. Her PI sessions about Cloud 9 and repeating Drew's "butterflies" are particularly hilarious to watch, since there is this faint smirk there.
Maybe I am reading her all wrong and she genuinely is head-over-heels in love with him. I don't know. Sometimes this body language business is too tricky to determine with all of the edit lop & chop. My favorite line describing her passion with Juan: "I feel, like, electrified. I feel like... I dunno... I stuck my finger in the light socket". Not sure how that compares with Clare's wobbly baby giraffe description, but I take it Nikki had less trouble walking back from Juan's date than Clare did.

Besides all the talk about Clare, when Juan comes back from Clare with her allergies, he sits on the couch with enough room for someone (Clare should she come back) to move and sit next to him. Sure enough Clare comes back and they all let her sit right by him. All these brilliant women!! It seems like Clare is the only one in the game, everyone else is off the board.

To be fair... Nikki DOES want to get to know him better. Andi thinks he's hot and fusses quite a bit about not having a date yet. Renee and Juan are "buds". I don't know what is going on with Sharleen anymore.

I think it's started because there is too much making out for nothing to be started. I agree Nikki appears cautious and her story will be on the upswing. Andi complains out of Juan's sight but forgets when she is with him, so I'm not sure how much of an upswing we will see with her.

These women are brilliant! They are not biting this season, I think particularly Sharleen. To me her goal is being a performer and I sense she does not see the road via Juan. She may like him but knows this is not going to lead her in the professional realm in which she is seeking. Then again what do I really know?

I find myself agreeing with a few things that you've said. I don't see how Clare wouldn't be F1 with her storyline, how there are still obstacles that need to be overcome and just how he is talking about her. With Renee, I can see her as the new Bette too. She would be great!!
