Interesting comments from Neil Lane who we never got to see.

Juan Pablo Galavis created quite the controversy during his "Bachelor" finale when he dumped Clare Crawley after a controversial, sexual comment she says he made to her during their final date -- and then appeared on the "After the Final Rose" reunion special with chosen woman Nikki Ferrell, refusing to say "I love you" to her or reveal their future plans together.

Host Chris Harrison was visibly rankled with Juan Pablo, continually trying to get him to say those three little worlds. He even enlisted the help of "Bachelor/ette" alums, one of whom told Juan Pablo not to bite the hand that feeds you.

It sounds like the show was frustrated with Juan Pablo all along. Harrison tells "Good Morning America," "I'd been frustrated for a long time with him. I know some people take it as I don't like Juan Pablo or ... I'm angry at him and I'm not. I was trying to help him. Any inkling of emotion would help him."

When asked if there was a divide between Juan Pablo and the show, Harrison says, "Yeah, there was. I don't know, but for some reason he just fought it the entire way. He fought the process."

Meanwhile, jeweler Neil Lane, who famously provides the engagement rings for the "Bachelor/ette" finales, tells People that he thought Juan Pablo was ready to propose to Nikki in Saint Lucia.

"He indicated to me that he had found the right girl. He did not give a hint that he didn't have that certainty about the woman he was choosing. Sitting in Saint Lucia and talking to him, it was clear he had a girl in mind and he wasn't taking it lightly. He seemed excited about the moment and finding the best ring for this particular girl," says Lane. "When I left him, he seemed prepared to propose. There were other 'Bachelors' over the years, like Jake Pavelka, who seemed less certain or who might have been struggling. Juan Pablo was not that way."

There's a theory floating around online that perhaps Juan Pablo was supposed to propose to Nikki during the "After the Final Rose" reunion -- that that's the "surprise" Harrison kept referring to and when Juan Pablo said on live TV that there was no surprise, that's when the wheels fell off the interview.

^^ I think that's quite possible. I think maybe he never intended to propose at the FRC, would take the time to get to know Nikki, and if things went well during their time together while the show was airing, he would propose at the AFR show. But, as time passed, and his relationship with the show grew more and more strained, he wasn't about to give them the satisfaction of doing that for their TV show. It was more important for him to win the battle against TPTB.

I think this is exactly right, but it makes me feel sad for Nikki as his anger took precedence over caring for her feelings.

Two weeks ago they finally told him he was dumped from Dancing with the Stars, which I believe was the basis for their joint plan to do a Sean and Catherine and live in LA for a while, on ABC's dime. ABC was obviously furious at his loss of filter (frankly they should be pissed at the handlers who should have been with JP during that interview managing the conversation better), and ready to disconnect his name from their brand.

My sense is that JP was probably told he had the DWTS gig in the bag, and so it particularly hurt when the offer was pulled over remarks that probably don't even reflect his own views about gay relationships.

His Mom mentioned his hyperactivity. His profile fits an ADHD/impulsive type diagnosis pretty well from my armchair. That can be a hard diagnosis to be married to ... or work with.

I agree with those who see this as JP's revenge -- to just shut down the TV show. He's locked in an emotional fight with producers and the network, though, without factoring the toll it takes on his own reputation and career prospects.

Also, Wetpaint has the story (that seems correct to me) of what he said to Clare in the helicopter, which was unfiltered to say the least, also consistent with the sort of blurting the first thought in your mind behavior associated with ADHD.

Let's hope he discussed this with Nikki before the show. I think they were both on the same page while sitting on the sofa together.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. This is why I did not like Juan Pablo's behavior and attitude at the ATFR show. He thought more about himself in that moment rather than Nikki. IMO, that does not bode well for their relationship.

This was way different from the Brad and Emily ATFR where the couple were at loggerheads with the machine doing its best to prod and question (with the hopes of getting their hands on her as their future lead).
Here the couple were facing the machine together.

I believe JP was put on the defensive and instead of her having to take any flack he took it for her. Did it make him look uncaring of her feelings, yes somewhat but yet if you watch their interactions he was very tender with her. He expresses himself different than most and I believe she gets him.

If so, then Nikki came across much more diplomatically than Juan Pablo did. I did not see it that way though. To me, Nikki looked shell shocked sitting there while Juan Pablo was talking. Her body language and facial expressions while she was talking and while Juan Pablo was talking did not line up to me to indicate that she was on the same page as he was. I think Nikki also had a somewhat of a surprised expression on her face when Juan Pablo said he did not have a surprise. Did she think he was going to propose to her or tell her I love you? I don't know. But, for a split second, she had a surprised and disappointed look on her face, IMO. It sort of reminded me of the look she had when she realized at the FRC that Juan Pablo was not going to propose to her or tell her he loved her. This is just the way I perceived it. Maybe Nikki and Juan Pablo will beat the odds and make their relationship work and have a very happy life together, but from what I saw on the ATFR show did not make me feel that scenario is very likely.

Chris Harrison On the 'Bachelor' Finale: 'More Juan Pablo Spoke, the Worse He Looked'

Last night's episode was intense. Could you have predicted all that drama?

No. That was the weird part. Usually as the host and as a producer on the show we know exactly for the most part what we're going to get. The show has its beats: Sean sits down, and it'll be difficult with Lindsay but it's not a huge deal; and there's the coronation of he and Catherine. Last night, going into the show, I had no idea how it was going to go from start to finish. I really had no clue what I was going to get and it really started with the audience... not knowing what their reaction was going to be. It made for an exciting, fun night for me.

Let's start with Clare. For the most part, our readers applauded her for standing up for herself. Did you think she came across well?

I really liked Clare on the show and I found it surprising that she got such a negative rap during the show. That's something I didn't anticipate from our fans, so I was a little taken aback by that. But then last night she redeemed herself. I didn't think she needed to! People saw the real Clare -- a strong, confident, beautiful woman. She did a 180 with the audience. She definitely won everybody back and she stood up for herself and she felt like she did it too late, but I told her, "It's never too late. You did it when you needed to."

There's really no other way to put this: Your conversation with Nikki and Juan Pablo was painful to watch. How awkward was it in person?

I wasn't harping on him so much to make him say "I love you," that's kind of irrelevant to me. It was just, things weren't adding up and it was just bizarre. Their body language was telling me one thing and his words were telling me another. It was him. She wasn't allowed or able to speak her mind. I almost felt sorry for her. She was uncomfortable. He was making her uncomfortable, and I assume, I'm hoping at least, it was just an orchestrated event by him to somehow and in some way, get back at me or the show, I don't know what his motivation was for what he pulled last night. That was the most puzzling thing. I really felt like I was sitting here, like Jerry Maguire, saying, "Help me help you. I'm trying to make you look better. Come up with an articulate thought about this woman next to you who has pledged her devotion to you." The more he spoke, the worse he looked. I felt bad for both of them.

Did you expect him to be that antagonistic toward you?

Sadly, I got exactly what I thought I was going to get last night. Some you saw and some you haven't seen [during the show. Things] were a little contentious but I never felt like I was at odds with him. I don't dislike him whatsoever. I wasn't mad at him last night. I was just trying to think, "How can I make this guy articulate his feelings and show his emotions?" ... This guy is not looking good and all he had to do was simply explain that even if he didn't want to say I love you, that's totally fine, but say something. Everybody's invested in this and you came into this with the understanding of what "The Bachelor" is. You can't get away with, "I've never seen the show." He knew exactly what he was getting into. He had trouble embracing being the Bachelor. People take that as an indictment on you and it's not. It doesn't make you a bad person. He had trouble getting into the process.

Do you think Nikki really loves him?

I think she loves him because only a woman who loves a man would've sat there and endured that last night for him. She wanted to speak her mind. She wanted to say more. She was not comfortable and she sat by his side! Only a woman who loves a man would've done what she did. She was a trouper.

Do you think he really loves her?

Yes. I think he's told her but I don't think he wanted to say it [last night].

Your critics are accusing you of being a bully last night. What do you say to those people?

I can't disagree and I can only respect their opinions. That goes to show how great the show is and this is why I love it: I had people telling me how great I was last night and I handled him and he was a bad guy and then I had people telling me I was the worst person in the world and he's great. As usual, the truth lies somewhere in between. I love that it evokes that kind of emotion and that kind of debate. I totally respect that opinion and maybe I was! I have to go back and watch it to see. Maybe I was hard on him. I don't know. I went into that with the intention of being fair and letting him speak his mind, but after what Nikki said, I thought I was being fair in getting him to reciprocate some emotion.

Some people noted that you walked away from him as the show went to commercial. What was that about?

Honestly, I had a short break and I was so parched, I ran over to get some water. I just walked five feet to get my water bottle and then I ran right back on stage.

What are the odds that Juan Pablo and Nikki make it down the aisle or even get engaged?

Stranger things have happened, right? That's the beauty of the show and what it's about. Who can predict? The silliest thing you can do is bet against them. Maybe they will last forever and honestly, I hope they do. I wish them nothing but the best. People took last night as I'm angry, but I'm not. I just wish he'd embraced us a little more.

C'mon. Seriously?

I was the guy that would've bet a million dollars that Ali and Roberto would get married and then they broke up. Who knows? It's a crazy world out there!

I haven't read the story yet, and was debating on whether I wanted to waste any more time going back to watch, but it seems there was a camera in the helicopter contrary to what Clare said. Maybe it was a Go-Pro type camera without a cameraman, but it still should have been able to at least confirm what she said about him leaning over to her and whispering something, even if we can't hear it. We could have seen that that actually took place and maybe her reaction. Not sure if I believe it even happened, and maybe was manufactured drama. Don't know. I do remember thinking as she was narrating that part during last night's episode, that she didn't seem like she was willingly walking up to the top of that hill, that he was almost having to drag her.
