I use the term "generally" because there are times that a cast member quacks and it, indeed, is a duck.
The issue of cast' family/friends who are members have been dealt with on other forums where posters do not have to post unicorn and rainbow comments in order to placate those members. Generally, they are told to avoid those posts or duck and cover.
Oh boy, if we have to zip our lips in order to not offend a relative /friend of a contestant, what is the point of being here at all? The "forum" is supposed to be here for us, not the well-being of the contestants and their retinues.
As a very good friend of the Weatherman's brother, I can attest that your skin has to get thicker as the season goes on. You learn (or at least should) to ignore, ignore, ignore the people who don't know you. I know his mother was on a board initially and then got off, as did his brother. That's just the way it goes. And we all know the Weatherman had lots to be made fun of... But the most important point is that people should be able to post what they want - no matter WHO is on or reading the boards!!
We must overcome the notion that we must be regular... it robs you of the chance to be extraordinary and leads you to the mediocre. - Uta Hagen

Yes, I can see that it is difficult for those who actually know contestants. It would be for me as well. But these cast members have taken on the roles of characters for the purposes of the show and they all know it in advance. I personally can't imagine agreeing to the possibility of being humiliated or portrayed in a bad light for the sake of being on TV. The show itself has already done the job of making the cast vulnerable to criticism by choosing to portray them in an awkward (and that could include overly sweet) light. Reality TV is an uncomfortable medium for those who choose participate.
And California, I apologize if I made you uncomfortable. I was addressing a tiny portion of your post and totally respect your right to hold back on your commentary.

notguilty wrote:Critical thinking and freedom of speech are part of the joy of this site (and our country) but - again IMO - are most effective when expressed in a respectful manner.
In the fan thread, one fan was describing one blogger as a "piece of shit". So much for expressing anything in a respectful manner.
This is basically the difference
Fansite = "I can attack you or whomever just do not say anything offensive to my tv idols"
Forum = "We can make fun and talk about these tv people, in whatever fashion we want as long as we are civil and respectful toward one another"
The truth of the matter is in a fansite everybody is a 'piece of shit' compared to say St. Sean and St. Catherine. It is very disturbing to rever people like they are gods and blasphemy is a capital offense.
(yes I will shut up about it. Happy Springtime to you all. I love Spring so much!)
love_me and san have a difficult job being moderators of this site and overall they do an amazing job. since this is a forum and not a fansite i do have a suggestion. since last week or so the fan forum section of this site does not allow any negative posts about sean and cat and those of us who want to discuss more openly only have this one thread. because this is not a fansite i think it would be fairer to give the fans a fan thread, in their forum, for each season and let the numerous existing threads for sean & cat's season (dancing with the stars, media, facebook/twitter, etc.) be moved over here to regular discussion threads in this section. right now, i have to admit it does feel like the fans have taken over this site and those of us who want to discuss openly are being a bit neglected. also, the rules need to be clearly communicated and sticky posted in the respective sections so everyone knows what is allowed to be posted where.
edit to add: the problem with giving all the existing threads re: sean & cat to the fan forum is that it seems to be encouraging a change of the nature of this site from a forum to a fansite.

Great idea gabriele - DWTS should be here and not in the fan section..... cause anything I have to say about Sean's dancing abilities... doesn't fall into the fan category
eta - totally agree about too many threads in fan section.... they should be in the general discussion area.

You could post your thoughts on Sean's dancing in the general DWTS section. I'm assuming that's what those threads are for and it would make sense instead of having the Sean-DWTS thread here.
I actually like having multiple threads in the fan section. It's so much more organized and it's easier for me (and others) to know where to post things. If some really want to those threads in this section, maybe make duplicate ones? I'd have no problem posting things in multiple threads for discussion.

It's not that I don't want fans to feel welcome here either, that's not the case... cuz that's part and parcel of watching the show. Some seasons you'll like a lead and their F1, some seasons you won't. Some seasons you might hate the lead, but like a few contestants - it's just the way it is. I don't mind the gushing that goes with it... but for those that aren't feeling it.... don't take it personal if they poke fun or snark on one of your favorites. I've been on both sides of that fence. I've dished out the snark... and I've defended a contestant or lead that was snarked on. I just think that if you want to be part of a public forum... you have to ignore what you don't like... it's just as simple as that. Defend away, or state your opinion as to why you don't agree..... nothing wrong with that... just don't chastise a poster for having a differing opinion.
This is one amazing site, run by 2 great ladies, and I want to see it continue to be what it was at it's inception and not become a fansite, as that' will signal it's demise :Frown:
Glazedover, no worries! You didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. I was just saying how because I see a ton of friends and family members posting that I would feel uncomfortable saying something "not too nice". It is something they'll have to get used to and ignore, but I'm not ready to go there yet . Plus they all could have info to help our sleuthing ;)

that is an option too, but i don't think the regular discussion folks should have to recreate all news threads because it would privilege the fan forum thus furthering this site becoming a fansite overall.

Or people could just post any new news in this thread for anyone to discuss? Thus it's in both places and everyone can discuss. I'm actual surprised more people don't do that, but if you don't care about the couple enough to look for new info on them, you're also not likely to post it. If people want, I'd be more than happy to bring the more interesting interviews/news over here to this thread, but I'd doubt you'd all care to see every picture, tweet, video, etc. that is posted in the fan threads.

Again, I agree. The regular discussion section should be given more real estate than the Fan Section.

I think it's probably a moot point now as Sean's season is over, and only the fans are still interested in what's going on. Me, I only want to snark his dancing abilities... and even that desire for me is waning due to lack of interest on my part.
