Carrie Underwood (famous country singer) is very vocal about being both deeply religious (Christian) and a committed vegetarian (since childhood) who recently went vegan (not sure if she still is, but I remember when she announced it a cpl yrs ago). So being a vegan is not necessarily the hallmark of being a-religious. While Underwood's vegetarianism stems from her personal reaction to growing up with farm animals, many other vegans & vegetarians cite their religious beliefs as the reason for their dietary choices.

Re religious differences - tolerance btwn the spouses, plus tolerance from the community, would be key to predicting a successful marriage. So if the couple lives in the Dallas or LA metros, they can easily find friends in both circles. The LA metro is especially promising - an eclectic mix of faiths & secular people, many flavors of "spiritual not religous", plus bleeding heart liberals, gun toting conservatives, and everything in between - so it might be ideal for a couple with differing politics, religions, or commitment levels thereof. OTOH if they live in small-town Texas, someone in Cat's shoes might feel like a fish out of water, and the marriage may suffer as a result.

It's been a deal breaker for me in the past. I think we are very polarized in the US right now. Not everyone is "political", but for those who are, it would be tough...not withstanding James Carville and Mary Matlin.

politics isn't that big of a deal in Canada. You could probably be married a few yrs and not even know their political affiliation until election time. giggling

my guess is that it probably depends on how important politics is to both people and how strong they are in their views. someone who is a moderate conservative probably wouldn't have too much trouble with a moderate liberal. also, if one person just doesn't care that much about politics i doubt they will be too bothered if the other has strong views that are different from theirs. some folks like to talk or argue politics a lot while others could care less so i think it really depends on what place politics plays in one's life. also, how one talks about it is key. if one or both person wants to argue about it and get personal then the other may have a problem with that, but if they are both cool (able to calmly discuss) their views then it doesn't have to be a big deal. jmo.

I agree. Just because you are a different party does not mean that you can't come together on issues that matter most to you. One thing that Catherine said about Sean is that she called him compassionate. I think that's huge as it's what I actually most admire about my husband. I love my husband's goodness and his sense of humor and his kindness to others and his adoration of our children. While some may think it's odd we've never voted for same presidential candidate in our 21 plus years together, I love other things about him even more and that's what keeps us strong.

Actually, when I think about some of our closest friends ... a lot of us our two party families. I can name three other couples ... all married nearly or more than 20 years; all college (or post college) degrees, all professionals with husband and wife both working outside of home, and all three couples (four couples including my hubby and I) voted differently with the women voting Democrat and men identifying themselves as either Libertarian or Reagan Republican.

Not only is it not as big a deal...It's really quick. Watching the US gearing up for an election takes a couple of years with ads all over the place. I get tired of it and I live in Canada. Here they announce an election and a few weeks later you vote. Done!

Wouldn't mind the 6 month maternity leave either. I'd have another baby just for 6 months off! Hugesmile

Come to think of it, there's 1 fun advantage of being a two-party couple, but only works if one votes Dem & the other votes Rep - the couple can save themselves a trip to the polls, since their votes cancel each other out!
