A bigger percentage of viewing audience may have been viewing that episode but it could have been less in actual viewers. If that make sense.
How's that for talking out of both sides of your mouth?
Sooooo, more people were watching, but only with one eye? With their backs turned to the screen? While they were on the phone?

Question - do people still have those Nielsen boxes in their homes? The thought of how they are tracking Nielsen kinda gives me the creeps. But then, I don't understand how they know who's watching what anyway? Yikes!

She's very pretty and accomplished, but I dont think a professional athlete's schedule would mesh with either Lochte's or Arie's for even a dating relationship. It would work with Sean's. Someone in the couple needs to stay in one place. Otherwise, they'll meet up in some airport hotel once every 7 weeks.... not fun.

Neilsen ratings have two numbers, ratings and share. Ratings is the percent of the total number of households that have televisions in the U.S. that are watching the show. For every 1 ratings point it represents 1 percent of the total television households in the U.S.
Share is the total number of households with the TV TURNED ON that are watching the show. So it's possible that one number could go up and the other go down. They look more at share than they do at rating. The goal is to win the night, in other words, to beat every other show that's on.
A good illustration of this would be a Christmas Day football game. The rating will probably not be high because not a lot of television households will have televisions turned on. But, if it's the only thing on, the share might be huge.
Probably more than you wanted to know.
ETA: Last May I was a Neilson household. I had to fill in a journal for a week for everything I watched. It was a pain in the butt since I usually have the TV on all the time but rarely watch it. You still have to fill everything in and just indicate you weren't watching. Will never agree to do that again.

Good info, kate. Thanks. Yeah, I was mostly just kidding around, but learning something new is always a good thing!
So B'ette competes mostly with reruns, so should do well share-wise. Harder to do in the fall, I would think.

The bigger drop happened during Ben's Bachelor season when his finale numbers were down 42% from Brad's and ATFR down 33%. Both shows have seen continual decline in numbers in that critical 18 to 49 age group. Makes sense why they are dragging their feet on a Bachelor lead choice since Ben's season saw horrible % drops.
Actually that's not true at all.
The Bachelorette was up over its year-ago finale (on 8/1/11) by 7% in Adults 18-49.
In viewers and young adults, The Bachelorette generated ABC's biggest summertime entertainment numbers in the time period in almost 6 years since 8/27/06.
ABC's "The Bachelorette: After the Final Rose" grew year to year by double digits in Adults 18-49 (+14% - 2.8/8 on 8/1/11).

My numbers are taken from the final Nielsen rating numbers. This is for Finale & ATFR only, not the entire season:

You're both right. Kimmy's info is based in a specific demographic and golflady's numbers are for total viewership. So the show did improve in the 18-49 year old demo, but it lost overall viewers.

Yes, there's an example of why you can't compare Neilson numbers between the Bachlorette and the Bachelor. In the summer, ratings go down. Fewer households watching television. However, since there are usually reruns on, the show should be able to get a better share. So, a Bachelor show with a lower rating could have the same number of viewers as a Bachelorette show with a higher share. Does that make sense??

Interesting because I thought she'd be great for Lochte or Arie, especially Arie since he travels most weekends in summer for racing & so does she. I can't see Sean with a woman who's traveling that much for work. When golfers have a tournment, they're gone for a solid week with practice rounds M-W, tournament Th-Su. All I know about Lochte's schedule is he rarely takes time off from swimming but he's in one place.

I could see Arie with a teacher, someone who'd have the summers off and be able to travel with him to races. Or a writer, who can take her job with her wherever she goes. An internet blogger. I think he'd probably like a woman who could travel with him. Most of the racers wives and families travel with them during the summer.

Makes sense to me. I also now know I never want to be a Neilsen household. No keeping a journal for me. No sirree bob. I'm a channel surfer, it's 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there, wasting too much time on useless reality TV, skip all the commercials. I usually couldn't tell you what I've watched. But I always watch this ridiculous show. I don't usually brag about that ...
