Something about him reminds me of James Spader when he was in Pretty in Pink

How to achieve killer (American Psycho-like) style

Kalon McMahon- Bachelorette 8 - Discussion - Page 4 KALON_JOSEPH_REID_MCMAHON2

How the movie's elegant antihero inspires one industrious gent - and how you can get the Patrick Batemen polish, too. (If you dare.)

Patrick Bateman had a lot of things: important modernist furniture; tailored Valentino suits; homi- cidal tendencies. What he didn’t have was a reservation at Dorsia.

Bateman, the poster child of neuroticism and yuppie greed, became an unlikely icon the moment Christian Bale hit the screen in 2000 in all his manicured glory as the murderous antihero of the 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho. He sparked a fascination among climbers everywhere with one-upmanship, etiquette and the proper colors — and fonts — for business cards.

One modern-day incarnation of Bateman, with a much nicer disposition, is Kalon Joseph Reid McMahon, or KJRM, as the restrained monogram on his bespoke shirt confirms. Replace the Valentino with Hadleigh’s Bespoke and you have Bateman 2.0.

One other important revision? Rather than being into mergers, acquisitions and murders, McMahon is a senior consultant for River Oaks Consulting in Houston, the branding firm whose magic touch helped make Armandos restaurant and the Red Room event space hotspots there. He then turned the fictional Dorsia of American Psycho fame — care for the squid ravioli in lemongrass broth? — into a real-life, members-only eatery. “It was always a joke in college between my friends and me,” says McMahon, “that we’d make some money and open a real Dorsia.”

Mission accomplished, in a space which seats only 60 and boasts a 10,000-bottle wine cellar. Dorsia has ruffled feathers with its exclusivity and its high membership fees, but something tells us that Patrick Bateman would be beaming — rather like his sort-of doppelgänger.

“I’d be more concerned if people weren’t talking,” McMahon says, laughing.

So how does McMahon achieve his own impossibly perfect style? We take some killer notes.

GOING PSYCHO — How to get your Patrick Bateman on:
SUITING UP “Ed Shaikh [now of Hadleigh’s in Dallas] helped me build my closet when he was a men’s buyer at Stanley Korshak. Ed started me out on Ralph Lauren Black Label, then Hadleigh’s when it opened. I used to joke with Ed, who got me hooked on blue suits, that thanks to him, I think black suits are for weddings or funerals — which are pretty much one and the same for me.”

DAILY UNIFORM “It’s great being a man. Unlike women, our entire wardrobe can revolve around 10 or so essential items. My uniform would consist of my Hadleigh’s navy blazer and a white button-down shirt, with slacks or jeans and, of course, my Hadleigh’s slippers.”

EYEWEAR I have always loved a classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer, so I started bringing my frames in and having prescription lenses put in them a long time ago. Tom Ford makes a lot of great frames. I’m a sucker for his square tortoiseshell frames.”

TIES vs. BOWTIES “It used to be ties, because I was so long and skinny that, in a bow tie, I looked like a giraffe. But now that I’ve finally grown into them, it’s bow ties. Ed has these big, heavy ones that I love.”

GUILTY PURCHASE “A new Rolex Explorer II. In years past, I always thought that when it came to watches, size mattered. Now I opt for a more classic, sleek, timeless and refined look. I would say the rest of my life has followed the same transformation.”

TRAVEL BAG “A brown leather duffel bag, never black. Something I can slip my iPad and loafers into for the weekend.”

IN MY POCKET “I have, as every man should, an actual business-card holder that I carry in the breast pocket of my suit, or in the glove box of my car. I have a conservative business card for the consulting firm, but we did a special line of cards for Dorsia. They look like Patrick Bateman’s, and they have a blood splatter on the corner. Very American Psycho.”

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT “A good cardigan or hooded sweatshirt. They are prerequisites for day-to-day life. I need something to slip over a T-shirt so I can walk out of the house without feeling naked.”

AT HOME “My favorite thing in my house is my Eames lounge chair. I just found a white, child-size version, so I had to get it for my nephew as a present.”

SIGNATURE DRINK “Extra-dirty Grey Goose martini, on the rocks, in a rocks glass. I refuse to drink out of a martini glass, because they are impossible.”

OUT AND ABOUT “Nick & Sam’s in Dallas and Restaurant Cinq at La Colombe d’Or Hotel in Houston, for a civilized feast and a great dirty martini.”

Erica Rose dissed by buzzed-over new Bachelorette hunk: Is Kalon fighting for H-Town's honor?

How did reality show princess Erica Rose react to this week's buzz that man about town Kalon Joseph Reid McMahon might add another Houston face to Bachelor franchise lore?

"Well he once told me he didn't like how I represented Houston on the show," Rose tells CultureMap, "So hopefully he can do a better job than I did!"

If McMahon is on location trying to woo Emily Maynard, Rose sees it as a good match. She confided, "I think that there is a possibility of a romance developing between them — they both like the finer things in life."

"Well he once told me he didn't like how I represented Houston on the show," Rose tells CultureMap, "So hopefully he can do a better job than I did!"

The recent law school grad certainly doesn't have to worry about McMahon stealing her thunder, though: Rose is as active as ever, with charity date auctions, new reality show offers on the table and even the odd horror movie — with a cameo by her mom, Cindi Harwood Rose — on tap for the coming months.

Helped me build my closet? Really? That is so pretentious I cant stop laughing. I hope this guy sticks around for a long time. He's going to be my comic relief.

^^^ I thought so too Love_Me!! I don't think he is ugly by any means. I just the think some of his ill fitting (IMO) clothing choices are putting me off.

I cannot imagine him putting on boots and jeans, and getting down to some country music, much less rolling around in the grass playing ball with a step-daughter! Why in the world...???
