I should have been more specific in my post. When I say "backed out of the gig," I meant did she sign any forms and then get out of it?

I don't think Chantal ever agreed to be the Bachelorette. She seemed to want to go back to her life in Seattle and did just that.

So is that possibly why ABC hired Arie (and Nick?) a personal trainer only to tell him that he wasn't going to be the next Bachelor?

I can see them having some sort of a document for the contestants to sign. Not a valid contract of course, but more like a paper saying they would be interested in becoming the next lead and that they understand that there's no such thing as an oral contract when it comes to the lead decision, so the job isn't theirs until a written contract is signed. Otherwise some angry loser might try to sue them for leading him/her to think the job was theirs when it wasn't. Though you'd think all that would be covered by the original contract already. Might be worth the minimal effort to spell things out again.

The thing is, Arie Nick Josh and everyone else before them, did not sign any contracts. Take Arie for example. He couldn't have been more sure that he was going to be the next lead. He didn't dream that up himself. But at the end of the day, there was nothing signed.

Many times there are back up plans. They prepare them, like I said upthread, they brainwash them, but have every right to not offer it to them, because nothing was signed.

From what I know, Ben did not actually sign until very late, very very late.

I can't see Becca being offered to sign a contract on possibly being the next lead. She may have been told she's in the mix, but IMO that's about it.

How I see it is that whatever they may or may not sign in advance isn't for the benefit of the contestants but the show. Something that spells out, for example, that quitting your job or taking a leave of absence before the contract is signed is your own problem, so don't come whining to us if you don't get the gig. Make all the possible options sign that, so if they're angry about being led on, then you can just wave it in their face and tell them to piss off. It's clear they keep at least two people hanging until the very end before each season, so I'd imagine there are a lot of angry and disappointed wannabe leads out there.

Oh, I agree GA!  I don't remember ever hearing that anyone in considerations or the F1-6 or whatever had ever signed anything before.  Only the lead signed a contract and it generally is last minute (not that, that keeps us from knowing ahead of time who it is ).  

Like Rhondam mentioned, I remember reading somewhere here that Becca supposedly signed something last season as well.  If anything was actually signed, I don't believe it was anything major or a real contract saying they actually were the next lead.  It would've been some kind of string you along, keep you invested and interested, etc. in it just until TPTB had the actual contract signed by the lead and the others were no longer needed as an option if negotiations fell threw or something.

Mindless, you have a point and it maybe necessary these days since more and more of them don't have jobs, want to be famous and seem to rely on the income from appearances and shilling products.  

But why? They're never going to sue anyone if they decide they don't want to be lead. That would make for very bad press. If anything it would make it worse for the show to have them sign a contract because then there's proof they were considering them should the castmember want to sue (don't see that happening either).

Yup. And instead we were blessed with the Farmer.

IMO what they did to Arie was crueler than their usual level of brainwashing and stringing people along. And yeah, to choose the farmer instead?
