There is so much flexibility in nursing. It is a job you can do in many different environments.KB_Mom wrote:^ Oy! I was really leaning toward the theory that she got a promotion that might involve some online remote work where she wouldn't have to be in Chicago and she and Chris might move to some city an hour or so from the farm.
You're right- it's her life, her choice, I just hope it works out for her.
You can work 4 hour shifts, 8 hour shifts, 10, 12 hour shifts. You can work days, evenings or nights. You can work only weekends. You can work only weekdays. You can work a little of both weekends and weekdays. You can work in hospitals, schools, acute care settings(doc in the boxes), community nursing is big in rural towns for care and education, especially for shut-ins, mental health, dr's offices. You can work for drug companies, insurance companies...the list goes on and on.
When I lived in my rural community (20+) yrs ago, there was a school nurse for one center grade school and the other surrounding grade schools used health care volunteers. We volunteered in shifts M-F. If there was a real emergency there was 911. Otherwise we had specific protocol to follow. Not every school district everywhere has the 60-80K for a RNMSN in a school.
So I could go on and on about what Whitney could do moving to Arlington. The list is endless.
I will say the happiest day of my life thus far, looking back, have been the days I was a stay at home mom with my young children being that volunteer health mom.

Her career is not a use it or lose it. She could always do continuing ed credits. I can see that she would say she worked hard to get where she was, for I am sure she is pretty smart. But, what you wanted and worked for at 20, may not be what your want at 30. As with all couples, we will see if they make it or not.

You are so rightstuckinsc wrote:Just adding, I have friends who have loved being stay at home moms. Some who also love working and having a career and setting that example of being a woman to their children. It is awesome that any wife of Chris's will have that choice.
But, I hope we don't get into the territory of trying to make one better than the other. They just aren't. And that to me isn't fair to any woman to judge her choice with this. We don't know the reasons why the chose to do what they do.
Like Buckeye, they may not have a choice, or maybe it is better for their family if they do work, they are better people if they work outside the home.
Anyway, Whitney will make the choice that is right for her, just hope we don't get into a spiraling discussion of one being better than another.

Ha! In order for nurses to maintain our licenses we have to do X amount of continuing ed regardless yearly. This varies state to state. I need 30 every 2 years --which is nothing.nuts2uiam wrote:Her career is not a use it or lose it. She could always do continuing ed credits. I mean how has outgoing and social Whitney not found a man in Chicago nearer to her awesome job? Just wondering.
Andi didn't quit to have babies. She didn't even move so it's nothing like what Whitney was talking about. As far as your last point, you could say the same thing about most people who come on the show. You wouldn't think any of them would have trouble finding love.
I was one of those unhappy to hear Whitney talking about leaving her career also but think there can be compromises once the show is over. I was a stay at home mom myself so have no issue with wanting to do that but hope she doesn't rush into anything.

Great answer Kasha. I work part time in the hospital and part time as a school nurse and love both jobs. The opportunities are endless. I loved staying home when my kids were small but would not want to be a stay at home mom full time when they got a little older. What is great about nursing too is that you can work part time and the benefits are pretty good (this may depend on where you live).

I wonder if Whitney will be in California with Chris while he does DWTS or if she'll stay in Chicago.

Diana- are you back on the Whit as F1 train after last night? It seemed like you were dubious. Am I wrong?

I didn't mean to compare Whitney and Andi, since obviously they have totally different life goals. I'm just annoyed by the show focusing so much on their jobs over everyone else's, when in reality they'd rather be doing something else. Not Whitney's fault obviously, I know how this silly show works.
And yes, you could say none of these attractive people "need" this show to find love, but many don't even pretend like they do. They just go on it for the adventure and to see what happens. Whitney's made it very clear that she wants a husband and babies yesterday. That sort of thing always makes me wonder why they aren't already married or at least in a serious relationship. She's living in one of the biggest cities in the country, so she's not lacking in options. Yet she acts like her sole option is a farmer from a small town in the middle of nowhere. I can relate to her sister much more than her. The sister clearly knows how silly this whole thing is, but Whitney's got her mind set on Chris and is acting like a child who's being bullied by the older sibling for no reason. It annoys me.

I have reason to believe she is F1 but I'm trying to lower my hopes because I do not what to get Chantal'd again.tennischick80 wrote:Diana wrote:I wonder if Whitney will be in California with Chris while he does DWTS or if she'll stay in Chicago.

^ I also think being a stay at home mom is great if you can do it. Not working was not an option for me, so I gave up my career track to switch to work I could do from home when my kids were asleep at night, and I would not trade the experience for anything in the world.
What surprised me about Whitney, or at least what they showed us of the conversation, which may be misleading, is that she seemed to say she would just chuck the career and move, and be a stay at home wife, before the children come. Maybe I am just reading too much into what was probably a snippet of a conversation. We've discussed here before the flexibility of nursing and I guess I was just expecting her to say something along the lines of she is not committed to staying anchored in Chicago at the fertility center and would move to Iowa and pursue the nursing opportunities there.
Again the conversation they showed may be misleading or I am mis- interpreting it, but I just got a bad vibe about rushing into giving up her life for a guy she's known for 8 weeks.

To be honest it makes me believe she really did quit.
Being a wife and mother may not be everyone's life goal but it certainly seems to be hers. I think based on her family history...the family abandoned by her father when she was only six months old, hard working mother trying to support two daughters and then losing her mother...it may make more sense than for others. She is craving family...his and her own. She wants to make what she never had. And she did explain very nicely to Chris that this was something that she will always have to fall back on if she needs it. Very realistic. I doubt she will chuck her career right then and there, but more like down the road when they decide to have kids. JMO
I agree with you Sprite. She knew going into this that it was Chris, and she would have to move if she was his f1, so it's not something I think she took lightly. Some women don't want to juggle a career and being a mom, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's not easy to be a stay home mom, but it's also very rewarding and if you have the means to do so and it's a priority for her, why wouldn't she. Like she said she'll always have her career to "fall back on", and I wouldn't doubt that if she really wanted a job in Iowa, she could find one.
