I don't know, at the time, I recall that he was a very popular choice, with about 65% of voters choosing him over Jeremy (who was better looking and probably richer).  I know Jason's stock dropped pretty quickly over the course of his season (and especially at the finale), but I don't think there was much of a public outcry when he was cast that he was lacking the "wow" factor, or that somebody else should have been chosen.  And certainly not compared to when they sneaked Jake's announcement into a DWTS episode, or to the ridicule/outrage that greeted Brad's announcement about a redo, or to the silence that greeted Ben's announcement.

Now that I'm thinking about it, JPG was also announced very early, and again, I think it was because AT THE TIME, the producers thought he was a wildly popular choice among the largely female viewers (and they were anxious to boast about having a "minority" lead).  Obviously opinions changed over time, but that's where things started out.

My quote above was based on insider knowledge. He had originally hoped he would be cast as TB long before he ever was on the 'Ette and was denied because of such, even with connections. Then a spot opened on the 'Ette. Even after being F2 with a sympathetic audience he wasn't a wow for women--let's face it an insurance salesman eeking by with his looks is not the entire package for the typical Dallas Cowboy cheerleader.

There have been several seasons where a last minute "applicant" or "find" worked out very well.

Thanks for sharing that info, Kasha.  I knew about Jason originally applying to be the Bachelor, and am not surprised in the least that he wasn't cast because I agree he wasn't their "typical" kind of candidate back then.  What changed however by the time Deanna's season ended was the reaction of a good percentage of the female viewers who went all gaga over the "poor adorable and sweet single dad" (not withstanding the fact that Ty did have a mommy), and who demanded the guy be given a chance to find a wife by becoming the next lead.  Whether the producers still harbored some doubts he would be a good lead at that point I don't claim to know, but they, IMO, obviously changed their mind about casting him due to the overwhelming fan reaction (and the way the season played out of course).  So I wouldn't consider that a last minute desperate decision, especially since there was another perfectly viable candidate in Jeremy.  Compare that with the other choices when Jake or Brad were cast.  Were there any? scratch

Regarding Chris and politics, it appears his views are diametrically opposed to mine, but since I'm not going to be on the show (or planning to fantasize that I am Embarressed! ), it won't hamper my enjoyment of his season. If he continues to appear to be a nice, smart, articulate and sincere guy, and he doesn't end up getting duped into choosing some nutcase, I'll root for him to find love.

I could care less what his political views are. I am not planning to date or marry the guy. I will be happy as long as he delivers a good show!

When does filming start? Will we have to watch to see if any of these potential girls turn off their SM?

Regarding politics... didn't Trista and Ryan Sutter meet Pres. Bush within a year of her season? My memory is wishy washy but I recall seeing a picture somewhere. Of course, he was better liked at the time.

Ssssooooo many married couples "cancel each other out" every election. Also very few stick with just one party. Two Republican presidents, Eisenhower and Reagan, were Democrats until 1950 and 1962 respectively. I think. Somebody can google and correct me here.

There's a difference between meeting a President and campaigning for him though.  I don't remember what the occasion was with Trista and Ryan (didn't even remember it happened).

Awww... has that boy been out canvasing door to door lately and riding the elephant in the streets? (I just knew about the Texas governor visiting the fair and doing his own campaigning.)

Again... my memory of the Sutters is fuzzy, but somebody here will remember better than I do. (Yeah... I do suspect they swing more towards the right than the left, although they could be Democrats now.)

Regardless, you know Fleiss & Co. will stick to what they know best. Sean Lowe is very religious, reading scripture with his bros before his wedding. Yet they got him naked and lathered up in the shower without a hitch. Until ATFR when "love to sleep naked" Lindsay mentioned her scripture reading with Sean, I had no clue any of that was happening on the show. Fleiss edited it all out. Like Nathaniel Hartsock, I just assumed he was another playboy. Ain't it cute how they spin thangs?

Is shaking someone's hand at the state fair campaigning for him? I haven't heard of anything other than that one thing. I don't like Rick Perry, but have no problem with him shaking his hand and being courteous when he met him in person.

He's done a lot more than shake a hand as I already pointed out. http://time.com/3107601/bachelor-bachelorette-chris-soules-iowa-2016/ Even Fleiss tweeted that he'd love to be a campaign manager some day or some such rot in response to Chris's obvious political ambitions. Nothing wrong with that just turns me off.

Reading these political comments makes it seem as though many people here view Chris as being a Republican as a negative. For me, it kicks him up a notch even more in my book!

Regardless of what we personally think, the only people to whom his political affiliation should matter is the women who are potentially going to be on the show. So long as they (meaning Chris and his potential wife) can get along with each other's views, that's all that matters.

Thanks for the link IG. I didn't see that link, and thought the pic at the fair was the only indication of political involvement.

So it wouldn’t hurt a candidate to be seen rubbing elbows with that guy, especially for a party that struggles with a gender gap.”

Great, just what we need. no no

IMO it shouldn't matter who he supports, he has that right. However I don't think TB is the platform for politics though. Look what happened with JPGs comments, only to be followed weeks later by CH commenting it's not a good idea to have gays on the show without any repercussions for his comments. It gets complicated, and shouldn't be part of this crazy reality TV show. IA IG, It is turn off, because it looks "political".

There are many couples where one supports a different party then the other, so unless he's cookoo about supporting a particular party, then I'd say to all the girls, run fast! If we hear him having alone time talking about the party he supports, I'll  :pullouthair:

I seriously doubt we'll hear "boo" about Chris' political leanings.  Though I would hope, that if it really matters to him, that he does have conversations at least with f1 and f2 about it (conversations which would not be seen on camera) - not to see if they agree, but to see if it's an issue which could cause a rift.  From the tone of some who've commented, to them, it would be a deal breaker.  There are a lot of "mixed marriages" out there, though, and plenty of supporters of both parties in Iowa.

Good Post  I agree I don't know why all this political stuff is being brought up from a picture from the Iowa State Fair.  I've never heard him say anything about being interested in pursuing a political future.  All he has talked about is how much their farm means to him and that he is looking for a wife.  It seems like something is being made into a mountain that was probably very innocent on Chris's part.  He was being polite to someone visiting the state fair and I don't know that there was anything else to that at all.  Why is this thread being turned into politics that will only turn ugly and the season has not even begin yet? no

You're right! A reminder why politics needs to stay out of the equation! It's so easy to get sidetracked.
