Re: Bachelorette 10: Edit-Storyline - *SPOILERS* - should we bother? Oooohhhh... why not?
Awww... thanks.
OK... I'll support anything anybody wants this season.
Y'all want Reality Steve to be right? OK.
Y'all want the spoilers wrong? OK.
I guessed they'd be wrong in Desie's season and I was right. Guess they'd be in Juan's too and was wrong. Maybe I'll just flip a coin this time?
I wasn't going to bother with this silly season, since after last season, "I am exhausted! I am SO exhausted!... and I am trying SO hard!"
BUT... I watched The Show... and The Promo... and Reality Steve's Nick Vid (not getting into that here, since I'm kinda *pffff* about it anyway).
Here is an elephantine "stab" at all of this mess.
Episode #1's cocktail:
A brief recap with tidbits that only humor lil' ol' me
... and posted for those who might have slept through it
Don't know what the editors are up to and not stressing myself to figure it out.
My biggest question is why are all the guys feeding her? Lots of sweets too. A sugar high makes her sleepy. Not drunk... she probably had just one of those. Yet she looked rather lethargic. Even when Harrison informs her about Chris Bukowski wishing to meet her, she responds with a ssslllloooowwww (but very sexy) "stop it".
Maybe there was a bit too much French, German and Polish on the soundtrack and no Greek. I kinda suspected half the guys are here for the free European tour.
Shortly after she gushes all-a-glow that the "love of my life may be standing in this house", we see Josh and Nick standing side by side (as potential "loves" of her), followed by her sit-down with the former. Ever the extrovert, Josh announces to the cameraman and any spectators that he is giving her his jacket. Andi can't contain herself that he's her type. "Nailed it. Pegged it. Damn!" That means he is either this season's Robbbbberto, the all too obvious F1 in hindsight, or... Charlie Maher, Trista's F2 dumpee, whose mom Roseanne stated "Charlie is the type Trista always dated". She does question his "obstacle" though... is he is completely genuine? As they sit before the roaring fireplace... oh yeah... the flames of Atlanta!... Andi says "There's a reason I'm single and here, y'know what I mean? Soooo...
...maybe my type's gonna change". Yeah... maybe. Maybe not. We... shall... see.
Not bothering too much with Marquel's "look to the cookie" scene (in which Andi PIs how impressed she was with him despite being shy out of the limo) and Eric's Global Odyssey talk of skydiving (gulp!), but I should throw in Tasos here as important because she repeats a revolving theme again: "he's very different than what I'm used to dating".
Andrew and Patrick may or may not have been foreshadowing the bromances and rivalries of the upcoming season by considering themselves "above" the others. Patrick is also hypercritical of those guys "with a strategy".
Nick Veee gets the "instant, immediate attraction" commentary. "I dunno. He just stood out to me." I think it was the polka dots on his tie that scored his FI rose. Dylan says whoever gets the rose (i.e. Nick) will have the bulls-eye in the back. Cue shot of his back so TV viewers can throw stuff at their screens. Humorous editing later: Andi says after FI rose time, "How's the party? Did I miss anything?" over a shots of Chris and Josh separately (the latter ready to drink his red-red wine). Then somebody says "Nick got a rose" over beaming Mister I-am-so-wonderful.
One of many curios: Andi tells Mister I-forget-his-name that "if I wasn't open to moving somewhere else, I might as well not have come here. I might as well stay in Atlanta and try to date someone there". Yeah... but isn't Josh from Atlanta? He makes it pretty far.
When Andi first entered the room, her line of "this is not my normal life" was spoken over Farmer Chris from Iowa. Being Bachelorette is definitely not "normal", but also we have very different careers going on here too: farmer vs. law practice.
His sit-down was rather interesting, edited right after a her who-should-I-give-the-impression-rose speech. Before giving Nick his first impression rose, her line "great first impression" is spoken over Chris, not Nick. Chris is then mysteriously cut from the screen as the guys next to him comment on the situation... as if Nick getting the rose will only hurt their chances.
Oddly, Chris does all of the talking in a PI session. She didn't. This is no big deal, since there is no rule that the lead must comment on a potential F1 in episode #1. Yet she does comment on Josh, Nick, Marcus and three others... and with similar words of praise. We don't know her opinion of Chris, but there is some interesting body language here: As with Josh and Cody, she is wearing his jacket... but it is unlikely many viewers noticed since they weren't told about it as with Josh. In a later scene we see Marcus leading Andi by the hand to a somewhat public seat. Here, Andi is leading Chris by the hand towards the "private" spot... much as Ashley did Jayyyy-Pee... and to the same room where a famous coin-kiss toss once occurred (only they've added a new couch and drapes since then). I also detected some recycling of those uber-soft guitar melodies they like to use with coin tosses and poetry readings in Atlantic City.
Now... if Josh is F1, I wish they would stop picking our brains and allow them time to heal properly after last season. I repeat... Not... A-G-A-I-N. To make matters worse, Chris is shown... I think... three times after key Andi phrases using the word "husband". (Uh oh... time to bang my head on the wall. Bang! Bang! Bang!) After saying the H-word twice as she dresses, we get Chris in the limo saying he can't wait to meet her. Later before the rose ceremony, she says over Chris "this is gonna be hard". Not half as hard as it will be for the suffering viewers trying to piece this silly season together.
The other Chris... Chris Bukowski... looked so depressed not being able to crash the party. Poor boy always wants what he can't have. He lost Emily to Jefie. He lost the big win in Bachelor Pad to Nick... er... a different Nick. Now he can't have candy Andi. Poor boy needs to quit reaching for the stars. Unless... this was some sort of gag. Whenever a contestant is a friend of Mister Harrison and pulls a stunt like this with a well-positioned camera involved and security is practically reciting dialogue from Notting Hill (when Hugh Grant is trying to get to Julia Roberts on a movie set... "I'm sorry, you can't pass"), I get a little suspicious. Are they cookin'-cookin' something oddball this season? Did they feel they needed two Chrises to make a trio with Mister Harrison? Already had two Joshes and two Nicks that night.
Oh yeah... but only one Marcus. After she admits being "nervous" with Chris, Mighty Marcus tells her he is "nervous". Yet he is sure to stay for a while thanks to the first-out-of-the-limo guitar rift that he shares with past contestants Drew, Sean Lowe and Ryan Park... as the "hot" one. Like Trista's F4 Doug, he has the piercing "eyes". (Already, I am having déjà vu of Trista's season even if the pecking order may be different this time around: "the type she normally dates" Charlie/Josh, introvert and nervous "not her type" Ryan/Chris, restless "target on his back" Russ/Nick and now "hot for the eyes" Doug/Marcus.) We get the sexy mud bath instrumental when he sits with her... no surprise there. Then... after so many "hots" in her conversation, she then deflates his status by simply saying "I'm intrigued by him" (?!)
Yet... again... "Marcus is not the... *drink!*... type I thought he was..." This will be a season of discovery for our lady astronaut.
We can't use voice-overs to determine whether or not somebody is F1 with any sort of accuracy (I learned that the hard way), but they do tell the "truth" about a contestant and his/her storyline... or something about him/her in other ways. Also editors love been sneaky.
-For example, Josh is highlighted before the rose ceremony when Andi says "I came here to find love and I look at the 25 of you". This could mean Josh is The One or simply part of 25 that includes The One.
-More menacing to Josh's storyline comes from Chris Harrison at the start of the ceremony: "you will be going home immediately". Obviously not today, but at some point in the season. One can argue though... that his home also happens to be in the same city as hers... and therefore he can still be F1.
-Marcus gets "if you do not hear your name"... Does this foreshadow a normal rose ceremony elimination later in the season?
-Chris is in the middle of a group, in which Marquil and (fleetingly seen) Brian are the only future rose recipients besides him, that is shown after Andi's "I'm hopeful, you know" and during "of finding love here". Again... open to multiple interpretations.
Interesting visual in the ceremony: Eric receiving the rose involved Josh observing him. Eric preceded Josh (last out) in the limo arrivals. Also Tasos, who travels as extensively as Eric... and apparently Brian too. Were they the guys he was closest to?
In any case, I will wager Josh, Chris or Marcus is our next bachelor (depending on who is still on the market at the end of this) since Nick is just too-too involved in the drama going by our...
Seasonal Promo shown at the end of episode #1
Ugh! I have grown to hate these, especially after last season's plastered the F2 dumpee all over the place... even in "hidden" spots.
Two to play with. Take your pick:
abc.com promo pre-spoiler and pre-show (with Iowa corn-field shot):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JLGTKimVQw
episode#1 promo (without Iowa corn-field shot):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClgzFYR2IZg
First... that rapid fire montage at the beginning. What a head sore! The last time I remember one of those was Jason Mesnick's promo. That one had him say he never expected things to turn out this way and we get the rapid fire montage leading to his cry over the balcony. Not sure what they are up to here, but I am guessing there is some unexpected twist of sorts. Anybody with patience cataloging all of the screencaps not shown later? (Other than the corn-field kiss.)
In other ways, this promo is similar to Desiree's but with an "interrupted interview" ending like Juan's. Actually the only similarity with Juan's is the (possibly?) deceptive ending.
Andi's disbelief in fairy tales also reminds me of Ashley Hebert Rosenbaum's boo-hoo under the covers at the end of hers... and not having the happy ending she wanted with Bentley. Fortunately, like Emily, Andi is no demure flower and can easily go West Virginny if she has to with these guys.
Andi informs that her life is about to change forever at the start. Good change or bad change? This is a contrast from the usual "given this great opportunity" and "happy to be on this journey" talk. Like Desie in Munich, Andi is dressed princess-like in her first slow pan. Therefore, if it is a "bad" change, she will at least suffer in a designer dress.
Couple voices I'd like to identify, but haven't searched all of the threads yet for answers...
-the guy who says this is a one time adventure to "throw my self into love"? Sounds similar to words Jason Mesnick used in Deanna's (a.k.a. future Bachelor potential).
-who is making her "blush"?
The "there's something not right about the way I feel right now" could potentially relate to Eric's passing. Just a hunch of mine. Or maybe she changes her mind late in the game.
OK... I am not going to attempt comparing this promo to past Bachelor ones since they are all-over-the-place both in editing and outcome. Yet the 'ettes have a little more consistency. Do Andi's guys compare to past F1 guys? Technically I can't find an exact match but both Josh and Chris have prominent early scenes typical of F1 guys and are featured mostly in the outskirts of The Drama.
Codi and Marquel are part of the macho police squad, not that we expect them to go far anyway. This season seems to lack rough-and-tough sports competitions, so the guys must make up for it.
Nick is a primary center-of-focus with Andi here, not unlike Ali's Frank. Her "there's that connection I cannot deny" and "he sees every part of me" are likely not about Nick and likely not shown during Nick clips, but the fact that he is getting the prominent head shots in-between the dialogue suggests that the editors want you to focus on him as one of the stars of the show. Of course, his line of being fearful of "losing it" makes him this season's "head case" as well... "she's my girl, I'm not interested in your dates" echoes Big Bad Ben in Desie's season.
Somebody accurately predicts "we can all pretend that we are best friends but this is not how it is going to end". Among many Nick scenes, we get lines directed to any number of guys like "I don't like people who think they are better than other people" and "if you can dish it, you'd better be able to take it". Like Nick, it looks like Josh may also have a bumpy ride this season, saying he has feelings for her but doesn't want others talking to her.
With Josh, this key line could be F1-ish: "She's hurting right now. She's emotionally spent." The reason I suggest that is because the editors like to show "her man" showing concern. Not that the F1 is the only one showing concern; Mickey T. was hopeful in voice-over that Desiree would get through her hardships.
In contrast, Patrick (I was thinking Marcus initally) comments "it's over with at this point" with no sign of hope. This reminds me of Mike G. seeing just doom and gloom with Des' situation.
Right after that statement, we get Chris as the last guy seen before the fade-out to sobbing Andi saying "I knew it was too good to be true, though... I mean, really. Let's be honest." Earlier, Chris... I think... is the one listening to her say (and "let's be honest"): "You want to believe everybody is here to fall in love, but realistically that is not true. You know that is not true". After she sobs "I was so wrong" over a shot of JJ (?), Chris is shown shaking his head "no" in response... either in disagreement to Andi's statement or simply in reaction to all of the mancry going on. With the guys "acting like teenagers" and Momma Andi having to ask "what is going on?", we see Chris only half listening to a "don't trust him" declaration... and half glancing at the camera as if he is completely out of place in all of this drama. I don't know what all HE was involved with this season... maybe he has his hands dirty too, but he always seems to be on the fringe of the war zone... even literally out of focus in two key shots showcasing another guy under pressure.

Re: Bachelorette 10: Edit-Storyline - *SPOILERS* - should we bother? Oooohhhh... why not?
Thanks. That made a very interesting read. And thanks for attempting a neutral recap here.
While I find it difficult to compare seasons and their edits like you do, it is good to read others observations of where the focus of the editing seems to be placed.
For example : The theme of Andi's "usual type" VS "someone different or not what she originally thought" and the obvious comparative/contrary edit both Nick and Josh seem likely to get.
Should I bring across some of the posts that the non-spoiled ladies have made to this thread ? Perhaps that could be a point of discussion as well.

Here are some examples of what the non-spoiled ladies noticed. I just love reading these
MVMom39forever wrote:Kashathediva wrote:atem wrote:Any thoughts on the episode?
Kind of Boring. No Hijinks.
I agree! I watched with a room-full of women aged 14-75+ and several of us were a bit underwhelmed with her selection of men. I am hoping they get hotter with their shirts off, haha!
MAJOR DOWNER ... No extended season preview! No intro to the Bachelors! No weirdness ... other than Anal Emil and the blink-and-you-missed it scenes with Chris the lout from Emily's season/BachelorPad.
HOPEFUL ... Andi! I enjoyed her all of JP's season even though it was pretty darn obvious she had her eye on the prize she was granted: Bachelorette lead. She is spunky, beautiful and smart, which is a great combination for a lead.
PICKS FOR TOP 10:
1- JJ the pants seller ... major hit with my teen and her friends who all just LOVED him for some reason.
2- Marquel and his cookies ... yum! great personality and great chemistry
3- Marcus and his hotness ... wowza! he's my pick for sure ... but he's a bit young
4- Dylan ... so cute and shy and dorky ... I like him too
5- Ron ... lots of comments saying that he was a gentleman and good looking
6- Farmer Chris ... I can NOT see her moving to Iowa but gotta love those Midwestern values
7- Josh the big teethed former baseball player ... we just want to know what his job is now?!?
8 - First rose software sales guy Nick, ... huh?? that's all we had to say ... didn't see that one coming. He might have to grow on me.
9 - Coach Brian ... he seemed sweet.
10- Patrick who is bromancing on the other guy already ... well, he might get moved down to my MAYBE list if he wasn't so good looking.
MAYBE's... Andrew, Tasos, Carl ... not sure about these guys yet ... at first glance Tasos might be "the "friend" that makes it to top 6 while other two could be filler.
PRODUCER PICKS
Nick Balding golfer, Bradley Opera Singer, Cody Personal trainer, Craig Tax Accountant and Bret Hairstylist
Finally ... beautiful Eric ... gosh, that was heart wrenching. I hope they treat him well.
in2deep wrote:OK...finally watched while not baking last night (and, no, marquel didn't buy his cookies from my company).
Loved Marquel, Farmer Chris, JJ (to my surprise), Eric (my early fave based on bios).
Meh: Fireman Carl, Brian, Opera Bradley, Receding Hair Nick, Brett (a lamp?? Really??), Nick S. that golf cart didn't impress me), Tasos (white socks?!?).
Already over them: bromancers Patrick and Andrew (who seems to be a class A jerk), and Cody (I don't think he's in her league).
Too up front already: Nick V. Lots of sc's, fear of losing her (yeah, that fear sounds just like squealing tires).
Vying for the next lead if they make the F4: Hottie Marcus and Mr Baseball Josh.
She's clearly impressed with guys who pay her attention and are getting to know her and reveal things about themselves. Still, I don't think she'd move to the country and be a farmer's wife for all the corn in Iowa.
I think we see some sc's of Dylan, because he has longer hair than most of the guys.
She doesn't want anyone in competition with her, that's for sure. Doctor and lawyer - poof!
Ok, back to the kitchen.
in2deep wrote:In the preview, Marquel tells Andrew something like he has a hard time respecting Andrew, and Andrew's response is to the effect that he doesn't give a f*ck what others think. Mark of a class A jerk. You can think what you want, buddy, but use the filter between your brain and your mouth.
Nick V ("she's my girl") and Josh ("I don't want anyone else talking to you") also go down a peg in my book for their public possessive posturing. Take a page from guys like JP, who had strong feelings but were more mellow...

Good to see you posting!! As amusing and interesting as always
Just Lil correction :
-Andrew and Patrick... Not Andy and Patrick
- Cody and Ron... Do you meant Cody and Marquel?? No?
Preview: i notice Andi never say 'husband' in all of the promos (though she did in the main episode), unlike Desie on her promo. The closest she gets was by saying ...'connection that i just cant even deny'..over the Chres-ish shot of her dancing w Josh . MAybe unlike Desie, more like Ali, Pookie is not searching for A hub after all?
On a related note: would you refresh my memory, Ali kept saying H word over Chris L, didnt she? So.. This season's Chris=Chris L= perfect next lead ? (We hAve way too many Chrises front runners on this silly show!! )

The "it's over with at this point", was said by Patrick, not Marcus.

Ever since Emily Maynard's season I always think about the heart-head-body internal struggle the leads may tussle with. Emily claimed she went with her heart (1F) but that didn't work out in the long run. Kudos to Ashley Rosenbaum and Des for choosing men who excited them on all levels i.e. Des wising up in the end. I hope that Andi's F1 ignites all her senses which will make the journey fun to watch.
I don't have a definitive storyline I'd like to see on my tv screen but something captivating a la JP and Ashley or SeanCat would probably be ideal. Is Andi or the producers capable of giving me that ?

Okay-dokey... I'll make my corrections. Maybe somebody here has all of the voice-overs on the promo identified?
This season does have a stronger "story" than last. Not sure where they are going with it...
1.) She keeps repeating how each guy is different than she expected.
2.) She says she is willing to move. If she only wanted to date in Atlanta, she would have stayed in Atlanta.
3.) She says with Josh... her "type" (Nailed it. Pegged it. Damn!) that "There's a reason I'm single and here, so maybe my type's gonna change"
4.) Uses the H-word a lot in episode #1, but not in the promos. Is the gal getting hitched anytime in the next decade or not?
5.) Lots of guys tell her they are "nervous" (TOO many this season), but her "type" Josh is praised for his confidence. She tells Chris that she is "nervous". Was he the only one she said that to? Lots of them told her they were.
6.) She insists after her rapid "montage" sequence in the promo that her life is going to change.
The guys in episode #1... just the front runners... even have mini-storylines beginning earlier than I remember in past Bachelorettes.
-Josh gets praised for being her "type" and for being confident. His obstacle is whether or not he's "genuine" with her. She has that element of doubt. Also #2 & #3 above don't work in his favor.
-Nick gets praised for standing out, although she can't explain well what it is that attracts her to him. His obstacle is himself, going by the promo.
-Marcus gets praised for his looks and his "piercing eyes". He has no obstacle we know of yet. I keep getting him confused with Patrick in the promo.
-Marquel gets praised for getting over his awkwardness out of the limo. He teaches her to "look to the cookie". (A black and white one at that.) Not sure about his obstacle yet.
-Tasos is one of the key guys getting the line of "very different than what I'm used to dating". His obstacle in the promo is the other guys accusing him of acting "above" them.
-Chris gets not one word out of Andi's mouth. She just giggles a lot with him, wears his jacket without asking and tells him she's nervous... and even insist she is curious about farming. It was hilarious the way she grabs his hand and leads him to The Private Couch insisting "you picked a good spot" while he looks baffled. No wonder Reality Steve is so confident he gets dumped.
Sorry, Codi, Brian and the others... not sure where you fit in The Story yet. Guess you will have your time in the sun and we will learn ALL about you. A couple apparently act like teenagers and Momma Andi gets tired...
