The Bachelor's Chris Harrison: Juan Pablo Didn't Understand How Cheap He Made Clare Feel

Clare, Juan Pablo Galavis
The Bachelor's Juan Pablo is confusing the women — and making them cry — yet again.
On Monday's episode, Clare showed up at Juan Pablo's hotel room in the middle of the night for some scandalous skinny dipping. But while Juan Pablo was very much into the late-night swim at the time, during the cocktail party he told Clare he never should've allowed it to happen. A few tears from both Clare and Juan Pablo later, host Chris Harrison is weighing in on the awkward situation and sharing what he told the Bachelor during the un-aired deliberation.
How was Vietnam?
Chris Harrison: It's one of the coolest, most spectacular places I've ever been. The people were phenomenal and just so loving and inclusive.
Renee finally got a one-on-one date. She seems the most "normal" of the bunch!
Harrison: Yeah. When Juan Pablo showed up at the house two episodes ago, and everyone had no makeup on and they were like, "Oh my gosh!" and Renee is just like, "Hey, good morning!" She's a normal woman, a mom; she has perspective. But at the end of the day that's what Juan Pablo says he wants, but is that something Juan Pablo really wants?
The Bachelor's Chris Harrison: Juan Pablo is sending mixed messages to the girls
Right now it seems very easy between them.
Harrison: They are a good match and nothing will change that, but it's just a matter of him choosing that life. He's very cognizant of the single moms there and has said if he's not sure then he should let them go.
Clare got more than her fair share of Juan Pablo time during the group date. Is she hogging his time or does he just like her a lot?
Harrison: Both, I mean she's totally monopolizing his time, and he's totally into her. But that's what sets up the bizarreness of his actions with her when he throws a curveball [after their skinny-dipping session].
About that. He made her feel horrible!
Harrison: When she showed up he was fully into it like this is awesome and sexy and she was as happy as can be and then he turns around and treats her like all of a sudden she did something wrong and broke the rules. It was not only confusing, but it was borderline rude. We even told him as much, but he didn't see it that way. Even though he apologized later I don't think he really understood how cheap he made her feel. In my deliberation I said, "You're not getting this, you really hurt her feelings, you need to fix it and apologize." But there are cultural differences with him and things do get lost in translation and how it's interpreted. It's his perspective; it's not right or wrong. So it made for interesting conversations and I had to learn to stand back a little bit and respect that.
The Bachelor's Juan Pablo on Jealousy in Week 3: The girls know what they signed up for
It's interesting how Courtney was vilified for skinny-dipping with Ben, yet Juan Pablo looks like the bad guy in this situation.
Harrison: I'm always surprised by fan's reactions. It'll be interesting to see how people perceive him after this week's episode. You've seen kinks in his armor already, but I wonder what people will now think about how he treats everyone and goes about things. But this is who he is and what he says and you'll see it, warts and all.
Last season at this time Catherine was still under the radar. Is there anyone like that this season?
Harrison: I think Juan Pablo is more obvious about who he likes. Sean was also young and didn't know as well who he was yet and what he was looking for. Juan Pablo is more comfortable in understanding who he is as a man, as a father, and what kind of woman he's looking for.
Juan Pablo actually teared up at the rose ceremony. I think it's the earliest a Bachelor has cried.
Harrison: I think he just really doesn't like hurting people. The rose ceremonies are very personal to him and he never quite got comfortable with it. From here on out it gets really hard for him.
The Bachelor airs on Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.

I agree. I try to look at it from this perspective. The TV character JP I don't like. Because what he does is sending mixed messages to the girls.
The real person- I don't know except from what I read on his twitter so I can't comment on that. :)

They spent a lot of time on Clare and the drama. A lot. Perhaps he likes the drama.

I do not know if it's because Clare is under stress from being in an unusual dating situation, but I would find being around a person that's that dramatic tiring after a while.

I have to admit, things are getting real on The Bachelor.
Vietnam, a wonderful country that I never thought I would visit.
I definitely wanted to take Renee on my first one-on-one date. Back in L.A., when I first saw her in the mansion, Renee was standing in the back of the living room. She wasn't trying to grab my attention, she was just being herself and I felt that she was exactly like me when I was on The Bachelorette. I knew she came to see if I was the man of her life.

Renee (along with Cassandra) is one of my special ones because she is a mom. I definitely didn't want to waste her time because she was away from her son, Ben. My first date in Vietnam was exploring the city of Hoi An and I thought it was the perfect chance to see if something was between us.
Our date was so great! You got to see us going on the bike, buying presents for Ben and Camila and getting a dress made for her and a jacket for me. We also ate delicious food, played bingo in the middle of a plaza and even jumped on a boat and jammed to some tunes with locals. In one word: fantastic.

Dinner was sooooooo hot that we had to take breaks and put wet towels on our necks to cool off. Unreal.
Renee is not only gorgeous, but she is a smart woman who wants a family. She's the kind of woman that any man would love to have by his side for the rest of his life.
I wanted to kiss Renee all night, but I held back because I was concerned about her son. I didn't know how he would feel seeing his mommy kissing a guy and maybe not coming home to be her boyfriend. These are the kind of things that worry me because I do care a lot about other people. Like I told Lauren S. in Korea, I didn't become "El Bachelor" to kiss everyone, I came to respect them all and not create false expectations for anyone.
Group Date
The next day I decided to take nine women on a group date, leaving Nikki for my last one-on-one date in Vietnam. We had five circular bamboo boats and there were nine women. I knew one of the women would end up riding with me, so I tried to be as fair as possible and ask them to each pick a partner. One woman, Clare, was left out and she got to ride with me.
I lasted one minute with my shirt on. It was so hot and I didn't want it soaking wet. Clare and I did pretty well. Sharleen definitely had the best technique but the funniest couple to see was Andi and Kat – they were horrible! Jajajaja.
RELATED: Kelly Travis: Juan Pablo Could Easily Get His Heart Broken
The wind was blowing and it was hard to control the boat. While we were stuck, we saw a dead fish and I tried to grab it but it was so slippery. Clare was disgusted by the dead fish but she surprised me by saying she would get it – and she actually did. It was a great move, so I gave her some sneaky besitos (kisses). I like being sneaky.
Cultural Experience
My favorite part of the adventure was spending time with the family cutting herbs and eating lunch. Those are the things that I love doing. You get to know the people and you get to really experience a different culture. I will never forget it. The women were awesome as farmers and we ate very, very well.
After that, why not ride some water buffalos? Not only did we ride on top of them, but stood on top of them as well. I kind of felt bad for those animals, but it is a part of their culture.

Mistake with Clare
Later that night, the after party was great. I had really good conversations with all the women, but I could express myself even more with the women I had a stronger connection with.
After the party I was relaxing in my room, watching baseball when someone knocked on my door. It was Clare. She came to thank me for the great day and she wanted to jump in the ocean for the first time with me. She was so happy that I didn't wanted to reject her, but I definitely made a mistake.

The next day I felt guilty because Clare got more time with me than the other women. I regretted giving Clare the extra time. Also, I didn't think it was a good example for my daughter to watch daddy going into the ocean with a girl at night. I already had a great day with her and even taking her to my pool was something that I should not have done. Honestly, my mistake.
Nikki's One-on-One
The next day, I had my last date in Vietnam with Nikki. I decided to take her to Marble Mountain and explore. We walked up the mountain, saw many statues and different arches and temples on the way – it was so pretty. I wanted to kiss her – we barely did in Korea, so I wanted to have a special moment with her. Unfortunately, you never got to see it because I decided to sneak a great kiss behind a wall. Like I said, I like being sneaky.

Then we got to the top of mountain and I showed her Hell Cave below. That's when I told Nikki I had a surprise for her. I wanted to go explore this Hell Cave but I didn't wanted to go the easy way down, so I decided to rappel down into Hell. Nikki was so scared that I thought she was not going to do it, but I talked her into it. The cave was very, very creepy. There were dead people statutes all over the place.
For dinner we went to a less scary cave and got way more comfortable. My conversation with Nikki was fantastic! She is very honest and open about saying things that she likes and things that she does not. She told me about how she gets cranky and also about her true passion. I really loved that night.
Rose Ceremony
At the cocktail party, I really wanted to tell Clare how I felt about our crazy night. Chris Harrison asked me why I didn't wait couple of days to tell her my thoughts, and I told him I like to address things very quickly and to be straightforward. I wanted Clare to know me better and what exactly my thoughts were. I also told Clare that sometimes I make mistakes. I thought it was better to tell her with a rose in her hand than later when she did not have a rose.
The rose ceremony in Vietnam was the hardest so far. It was very difficult to say goodbye to Kelly and Alli, but especially to Danielle whom I admire and respect so much for what she is and what she does for a living. It broke my heart to say goodbye and that's why I choked up at the rose ceremony.
Next week we travel to beautiful New Zealand. And I get to make my brother so jealous because we get to go to Hobbiton! I cannot wait for you all to see that one! I had great memories from Vietnam but it's time for the next step in my adventure and to keep figuring out mi aventura ...

Re: *No Spoilers* The Bachelor 18 Media Thread
I have to admit, when I heard we were going to visit Vietnam this season I was a little surprised and more than a little intrigued. Vietnam is a mysterious country that we obviously have a tremendous amount of history with. I was looking forward to seeing for myself what this land and its people had to offer. I’m happy to say that what I found far exceeded any expectations I had. From the moment we landed, the people couldn’t have been more warm and welcoming. Our crew did have a slight problem at the airport trying to bring walkie-talkies into the country, but other than that it was smooth sailing. We stayed at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. It’s about a 20-minute drive past what used to be known as China Beach. I don’t say this flippantly and I think our crew will agree: this was easily one of the nicest, most luxurious resorts we’ve ever stayed in. From the beach all the way up to the ridiculous breakfast buffet, that resort has it all.

Renee got the first date this week and they spent it in the small town of Hoi An, which was about a 45-minute drive from our hotel. I went into this quaint village with some of our crew several times without cameras or fanfare and we felt comfortable there. We had amazing experiences shopping, dining and just getting lost in the city. Renee and Juan Pablo also found it easy to get lost in this village together. Renee just makes life easy for everybody. The fact that she’s a single mom is part of it, but it also has a lot to do with the woman she is. These two obviously connect because they’re both parents, but I think there’s a lot more to it than that.
I’ll be very interested on how you guys feel about several issues this week. Firstly, I want to know what you think of the way Juan Pablo treated Renee, supposedly because of her son. He didn’t kiss her and continued to say it was because of her son Ben. But then he would proceed to grab other girls like Clare or Sharleen and make out with them like nobody’s business. Was this a good gentlemanly move, or should he let Renee decide what’s best for her? Should single moms be treated differently in the dating world or should they decide how they want to be treated? Later in the episode at the cocktail party Renee did finally get that kiss, but it wasn’t until she convinced JP that she wants to be treated just like the other women.
The first thing that struck me on Nikki’s date was her Xanadu headband. Doing her best Olivia Newton-John, Nikki really opened up and showed Juan Pablo she’s a lot more than just a pretty face. I think she really pleasantly surprised him by showing so much depth and compassion. Her love of being a P-E-D-E-A-T-R-I-C nurse really impressed Juan Pablo — even if he can’t pronounce it. She easily got a rose and moved up the list of favorites for Juan Pablo.

The group date led to what is easily the most interesting, bizarre, confusing and dramatic moment of the season so far. First off, it really just seemed to be a one-on-one date between Juan Pablo and Clare with a few other girls along to watch. JP is very attracted to Clare and they have insane chemistry. The two of them can barely keep their hands off each other, and most of the time they don’t. Clare got the rose on the group date, but that wasn’t enough. Feeling confident and frisky after the date, Clare decided to go to Juan Pablo’s room and grab him for what seemed like a fun little midnight dip in the ocean. This wasn’t the skinny-dipping episode with Ben and Courtney — this was a fully clothed late night dip that did get a little physical (or maybe a lot physical), and that could be why Juan Pablo felt so guilty. Either way, both of them mutually consented to be there and both of them really seemed to enjoy themselves. However, something drastically changed from the time Juan Pablo toweled off and the time he showed up at the cocktail party. He was feeling guilty and he decided to let Clare know he was disappointed in himself and somehow in her as well. So my question to you is, was it fair how Juan Pablo treated Clare? Was it okay for him to make her feel bad because he felt guilty for agreeing to do something he apparently later regretted? All of this and Clare’s response made for a very interesting and confusing night for all of us. Much like last week when Juan Pablo decided to restrict his kissing, it appears that the rules are ever-changing here.
His emotion carried over into the rose ceremony where we said goodbye to three ladies, Danielle, Alli and Kelly. (It is my sincere hope that when Kelly returns for the Women Tell All she’ll bring my girl Molly with her.) Next week we’re off to New Zealand. We’re now down to just eight women. Juan Pablo is starting to really have feelings for several of these women, which only makes decisions tougher and tougher to make. He’s really struggling during the rose ceremonies, which was evident when he shed a tear when it was over. It’s not going to get any easier. The incident with Clare might have happened in Vietnam, but it didn’t stay there – the issue between the two of them is far from over. I look forward to hearing and reading your comments below and you can always find me on twitter @ChrisBHarrison.
