Got it. It's not a proper word to use, however, I don't think him simply using that use makes him a terrible person.  In what context did he use that word?

He didn't use it - he re-tweeted a passage that contained it - his mom tweeted later that in Venezuela the word means less educated which fits the context in which the word was used in the passage.  After he re-tweeted it, JuanPa got a lot of backlash and he tweeted:

In Venezuela the R word is USED commonly and by NO means is to OFFEND anyone... #Relax #DifferentCulture #Respect

Tweeters didn't appear to take kindly to it

So, it was a retweet. While I don't condone the use of that word, people are way oversensitive. He is right, people need to #relax.

I am watching Late Night with Seth Myers. He has a segment called "What I am willing to give up." One of the people he mentioned in the segment was Andi. He said "what has Andi Dorfman given up when she left in the middle of a murder trial to be the next Bachelorette?." The answer was, "the respect of her peers." Ouch! Andi is going to have a difficult time.

As a parent of a child who is mentally challenged and as a family that has had to endure mean and rude comments about her being "a R" I don't feel like I am oversensitive.   I don't need to relax --- but I think what we all can do is educate the ignorant people who use the word inappropriately. I use the word ignorant as it means 'Lack of knowledge"  (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ignorant)    I don't blame him for not knowing, but I blame him for downplaying the use of the word by saying it is #differentculture  #respect   Obviously someone explained to him what that word means here otherwise he wouldn't have tweeted what he did.    He preaches respect and doesn't practice it.

As I said, I don't condone the use of the word.  However, him being in a different culture certainly could be the reason behind him being so blase about the word.  Perhaps, he does need to be educated about that word, but at the same time, he wasn't being malicious to developmentally disabled people.   I understand your sensitivity to the word, and admire you for your strength, sometimes outrage is a little misdirected, and I think it may be in this case.  He clearly realizes the word was not appropriate to say, but him downplaying the word, isn't because he is insensitive to it, but rather because the meaning to him is different from how you and I, and most other Americans define it.

I didn't say anything about being outraged. I simply think that if he had said something to the affect that while it means something different in his country he understands the difference and apologizes if he offended anyone that would have diffused the situation….but he didn't. His response when chastised is to blame it on the culture difference instead of trying to learn the lessons from this country where he lives.

They have more pics February so that's when they posted stills they were given.  The most recent pic - with the ring  on it has this caption:
Enjoy a romantic ride along Honeymoon Beach...let her know she is "The One"

Can you move that over here?  I don't know how.

This one?

Thank you!    This is the one that when clicked on has this caption:

It doesn't say anything to do with saying "let her know she is "the one""  It says to let her know she is special is what it says.

Like it has been said here  #keep it real

If it had been Clare who went horseback riding they would have used the picture of her too don't you think? Just an opportunity to drum up a little business. I would guess this company doesn't know any more than the rest of us.
EXACTLY. It is a bachelor related advertisement and that's all.

jcrbil wrote:While the "English as a second language" excuse is old- because Juan Pa has lived in this country for a long time and should have figured out before now how Americans view the world, I did read an article (either NY Times or Wall Street Journal) a couple of years ago which might shed some light on the subject.

The subject of the article was linguistics and the part language plays in brain/moral development (for lack of a better term)- it was mostly about why there is failure in diplomacy even when between fluent, sophisticated speakers of languages.  The whole point was that there are certain ideas or phrases that may exist in one language and not exist in another.  For example, there are world languages which don't really have tense.... so concepts of past (especially distant past) or future (and very distant future) are difficult to grasp.  An example from Spanish would be the use of reflexive verbs.... which is very interesting with repeat to admitting fault.  Where an American would say, "I broke that window", the equivalent phrase in Spanish would literally say that the window broke itself, and the idea that one might have to take responsibility would be foreign and, indeed, offensive.

So yes, I can see why JuanPa gets in trouble for having a different view of the world.  That being said, unless he is living in a total Hispanic/Venezuelan bubble, he needs to embrace the meanings of the society in which he dwells.  Since it it said that he wants to make a name for himself in the US, he will need to learn to think as the mainstream thinks.

This is quite interesting to read.  I just learned something new today!!

I have wondered all along if JuanPa is "curious" enough (Sharleen's word when talking about him at the WTA) about learning all of the nuances that are required when not only mastering a different language, but also totally embracing a whole new culture.  And I don't mean that as a knock on JuanPa, because I speak only English myself.

Some people might be more comfortable just learning enough English to "get by" and not be really interested in immersing themselves into mastering the new language.  I have gotten the idea (just my opinion) that JuanPa spent/s the majority of his life immersed in Spanish - by choice.  I get the idea that when he is with his family, they speak only Spanish to each other.  He is very comfortable in a Spanish speaking atmosphere, but his English is somewhat limited.

I live in Texas, where the Hispanic population has grown enormously in the past few decades.  There is such a large Hispanic population in North Central Texas, that everything is written in Spanish and English.  For some of those who speak only Spanish, there is no real need to even learn English now, if they don't actually work someplace that English is required.  I don't know what JuanPa's situation is, so I could be completely wrong about him, but that is something to consider.
