The Bachelor 18 Spoilers/Speculation - Media - Discussion

I normally lurk but I finally felt the need to post. I apologize for the rant:

It's funny how many are quick to shout how gross Juan Pablo is for saying this but yet never question ABC as to why in the countless seasons of the bachelor there has been so little diversity in terms of leads (whether it be gay, African American, Asian etc)  He answered the question, gracefully... no but he answered the question. He does not believe that there would be a gay or bisexual lead bc it would be confusing to children when most are brought up to believe that a relationship is between a man and a woman. Do I believe there are many children watching the show in the first place? No, but I see his point. A child could walk into the room and that might be a conversation some parents are not yet ready to have with their children.
As to the pervert part of the comment if you listen to the audio the language gap is apparent, he says forgive him if he is mistaken (which he was). There is a common misconception that the gay community is more affectionate and I believe he was saying the bachelor is already over the top and more affection would make it worse. And for those of you who are talking about he didn't write his own apology, please stop acting like it is outrageous. He, like most celebrities has someone to help clean up his mess, if he had written it all by himself you would be complaining that it made no sense. There has been so much negativity on the board this season and many couldn't wait until he made a mistake. The guy took advantage of an opportunity to have an "adventure" get a little exposure and if he found love during the process so be it. If you don't want to watch don't watch but you don't have to come post about it

Except this is a discussion board mean for discussion. Yeah I stated that he is gross (putting it mildly) AND ranted about the lack of diversity. Nevertheless, it is a discussion board for differing opinions.

I am not a huge fan of JP but I have not been "waiting for him to make a mistake" I think that we have had such HUGE advances in acceptance for all American's that when a TV personality speaks in this manner it is concerning.

I have thought about JP's comments today, and here are my thoughts.  He was asked the question about ABC doing a "gay" bachelor, and he responded.  I personally think Juan Pablo was expressing how TV viewers would see it, and not necessarily how he sees it.  Unfortunately, he is right, because there still are a lot of ignorant people out there.

HavenO: I rarely post here because of lack of interest in the series for some time now but you telling people they don't have to come here and post is just down right rude and unacceptable.

Personally, it doesn't shock me JP feels this way and yes I think he wasn't speaking out of context. I do think his point came off more harsh because English is his second language but even in he apology he says gays are too sexual and people wouldn't like that. Thats how I read it and its offensive as if gay people wouldn't control themselves and are sexual aggressors who don't know "family values". Its insulting anyway you put it. There is no giving him a second chance, he said his point and people have the right to react to such ignorance. How would he like if they said we can't have a Latino star because they would impregnate half the cast? Or a Black star because it would be too violent? I would be LIVID!! LIVID!!! if any of those things were said. I have enough of the bs in real life and don't need it on my tv. Which is why I know the company will give the company line and and some usually bs apology will be issued (unless you're CM Punk who gave one of the best apologies ever imo) so I find the viewers response more interesting because those are who everyday people have to deal with.

He screwed up big time and should get the wrath. I hate this "oh well it was nothing". It wasn't taken out of context he went on and on about it. English or no being second language he understood the question enough and should have the common sense to shut his mouth. But on the other hand I kinda wish more people were as honest so I know who the hell to stay away from.

Too bad he didn't follow your last sentence. With his words, he just judged and condemned a significant segment of our fellow human beings and their sincere hurt and outrage is apparent if you bother to check the internet. Very sweet that you accept his apology but doesn't make what he did acceptable.   

I hope that the outrage that people are feeling translates to the lowest ratings ever for the franchise.

I also agree. I strongly disagree personally with what JP has said but it sounds like he said something that he regrets, was poorly worded and has apologized. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes saying something stupid can be a learning experience and can generate discussion that moves everyone in the direction of greater tolerance/acceptance of each other. I would guess that JP's expression of his views has given him a great deal of feedback about how offensive his position is to many.

If I were to eliminate every person in my life that had a different position on social and economic issues I would have a very small circle. Sometimes too being challenged about my position on issues can solidify my views or can open my mind to the other persons view. I hope the feedback JP has received has opened him up to a greater acceptance of others. We shall see....I think the discussion is healthy.

Having someone else help JP with his response was expected. I doubt very few people write their own stuff without TPTB edit.

This. His comments were unacceptable, full stop. And I refuse to give anyone a "pass" for their bigotry, regardless of their rationalizations for it.

Juan Pablo is absolutely entitled to express his opinions freely, just as others are entitled to freely express their disgust for what he said. As for his apology, I'd be more inclined to believe it if I believed he had a genuine epiphany overnight and changed his attitude. But this is just like a small child saying "sorry" because mommy told him too, not because he truly understands what he did wrong. He said what he had to say to try and diffuse the situation, but I doubt he's learned anything other than to keep his mouth shut the next time he's asked a similar question. Whatever. I don't think he's a horrible person; just an ignorant one who's no longer worthy of two hours of my week.

I live in a progressive community, one of my lifelong best friends is gay and even I fully admit that I have ZERO (nada, nothing) interest in watching a gay bachelor show. It's not that I am a bigot, because I'm not; it is only because I just don't want to watch men kissing men and women kissing women. Just ain't my thing and maybe even a turn off.

A girlfriend, who I sometimes watch the show with, has a 6 year old granddaughter living with her and we now take great care to make sure she doesn't see most of the show since her, last year, deciding to kiss various kindergarten classmates boys after sneaking a peek of Emily Maynard doing it the night before.

JP didn't give the PC response to a tough question asked of him and so what? Personally, and regardless of production or ABC's response, I think in this particular situation, any press is better than no press.
