Prayers for the agony and pain of family and friends be comforted by the memories of their loved ones.
This continues to happen because if you really want to obtain a gun you do not go through the regulatory procedure. It's just like any other underground operation.
This young man, the shooter, like so many of the others before him, has some rather serious mental illness issues that were obviously not attended to. This is not to condemn the mentally/emotionally ill, but there is such a need for help and treatment that is just not being met. JMHO.

Yes, this is a very severe problem in our society(treatment for mental illness).

I understand that it's a mental illness problem, because no one in their right mind would do something like that. However, why? is my question that is happening so frequently. There have always been people with mental illness but the last several years, this is becoming the norm.
Gun laws are a topic that IMO will not resolve any time soon. Guns to me, are not something I would ever want, it's not part of my day to day life, it's not an issue in my community, however watching these events unfold, is so tragic and so unnecessary.

I think a lot of it because of the media attention these events generate. Everything is now so accessible to everyone world wide. We have all form of SM and 24 hours news channels that devote days of almost non stop coverage. Lots of sick people seeking the greatest possible attention to themselves. They see someone else doing this and they copy. Very sad that life and society has often become so impersonal that nobody notices when people are so troubled.

Even if mental illness is apparent, treatment is complex as is not a)easily obtained (in house facilities are difficult to find and have waiting lists and then the old insurance coverage issues) b) patients are often non-compliant with protocol. (meds can be costly and side effect issues)
Those who suffer from emotional issues will often self medicate with alcohol or other drugs to alleviate issues. So many compounded issues.

Re: What is happening around you, around the world? Thread #2
So this has been a hard fall. Finishing up my PhD lots of extra stuff that I had not been informed of was added in the last minute and delayed the completion and starting of the new job by two months. Got to the new job and half of what I had come to do moved on without me. Then four years to the day after my father died the brother closest in age to me died Monday. It was like my final kick in the gut to get over myself, let go of disappointments and anger, and repair things that had been broken. It has been a trying two days, but I am committed to moving forward without the sadness and anger. Well today my brother who I haven't seen or talked to since 1988 called me. He offered to help pay the expenses (this has been solely on me since 2001) and asked for copies of any pics of us. He is 14 years older, but told me about taking care of me my first two years. Losing him hurt, but I had let it go. It wasn't perfect, but it is a start. It feels like a gift after all the sadness.
So I guess I just wanted to share how my little miracle came at the darkest hour.

@stuckinsc... I am so so sorry for your loss and the pain you are going through. I couldn't imagine how hard it must be even with a miracle and gift... for which I pray you have many more miracles and gifts coming your way.

Be gentle on yourself and allow yourself good food, rest and as much calm as you can muster to heal.
For whatever reasons there are certain times destined as chit storms. Some of us have them more frequently than others. Try to keep your head up and keep walking one foot in front of the other. Somedays all that's needed is a small step forward. Somedays just standing is enough and somedays a physical or emotional cuddle and hug is all we can handle.
God speed.

Hey stuck, thanks for sharing you little miracle story! I hope we all have some little miracles to shine light and help us move on during the darkest hours of our lives.
On a happier note, my son who just finished his first semester in college is coming home today for a month! College is very challenging for him especially he's in a competitive program in a top school, so all this mom can do is to provide some TLC and cook a lot for him!

It's hard during challenging times to do what you know you should do but can't get over the hurt. @stuckinsc recognizing that you need to move forward is a good step. Like Kasha says, one foot in front of the other one day at a time.
