Bachelor Australia - Season 5 - Matty Johnson - F1-F4 - Discussion - *Sleuthing Spoilers* #2

Just putting it out there that in all of the interviews I have seen/heard Matty talk about letting the F2 go he has sounded very matter of fact and unlike what I expected from a person so heartbroken by the same situation. IMO he will do the sad face and all the trimmings but I just ain't buying what he is selling. JMHO

At this point, I am resigned to the fact that Laura is F1, and this season has all been about raising Matty's social profile as deduced by the girls in the mansion. Shame for them that neither he or Laura have come out of the edit in a particularly shining light, Matty has been stiff and wooden compared to the Matty everyone fell in love with last year, and Laura's abrasive personality and the obviousness of the season has turned a lot of people off too. I'm sure they will get their invitations to all the envelope openings around Sydney, but they won't get the sort of following that Tim and Anna have achieved. And I can't see them compatible long term either.

Maybe I'm being too negative, but I hope they don't go for a returnee again - Matty and Richie have been major disappointments!

I think the ease at which he has dismissed the last few girls demonstrates this.

I was a huge Matty fan last year and have been pretty disappointed with him this season as well! IA that a previous contestant does not always make for the best lead, you have to have a certain set of qualities that I don't believe Richie or Matty have, they were merely popular with audiences.

If the reports of him falling hard for someone early were true, then I think they would have had to edit out a lot of his personality so as to not make it obvious who his favourite is. It has been brought up on the show that he is easy to read, and IMO he definitely is! IMO the most endearing qualities about Matty last year were his earnestness, his goofiness and his very obvious love for Georgia. As a lead he can't be seen showcasing these things, as it would give away who the winner is!

I wish that they would have an after the final rose special where they can showcase more of the love story and more of his personality, but I know they won't! So hopefully next year they choose more wisely when it comes to picking the next Bachelor!

I was just thinking about something. The norm is that the F2 usually professes their love in the Fantasy Dates episode and the F1 usually professes their love in the final date am I right? IMO Elise is nowhere near telling Matty she is in love with him but Matty has been pushing Laura for the same info. I can definitely see Laura saying this before Elise does. Thoughts?

I agree that popular with the audience is not enough to carry a season. I was a huge Richie fan, but not so much any more.
You need a more mature lead who is actually ready to settle down. Doesn't matter if they have a business they want to promote or whatever, but they need to be looking for more than just a red carpet accessory.

I'll be interested to see when Elise does say it, because he doesn't seem to be asking it of anyone but Laura. And I wouldn't be surprised if Laura didn't actually say it. I'm falling is the only sound bite we have from her isn't it?

I agree. To this point Elise has only said I enjoy your company and spending time with you. I can't see her jumping to I am in love with you on the next date.

I agree with all the points above but IMO it's not out of the question that we might get some kind of follow-up program - either an ATFR, spin-off show or follow-up special (hopefully not a televised wedding - too soon, too soon!).  One of the producers did an interview in which they quizzically said the finale would "leave people wanting more".

ITA @Emayem, I LOVED Richie as a contestant, not so much as a lead, and the last couple of episodes really made him look like a bit of a douche IMO. Matty I'm more ambivalent about, so I don't really care as much, but these last episodes are going to take a toll on his popularity also.

It probably is better if they choose a lead who isn't a returnee, Sam Wood for example was great. But I don't think they will, having a retuned contestant gives a built in fan base to start with. I'm actually hoping that my fave contestants don't end up as the lead any more as I don't really enjoy seeing them getting ripped in the press, and doing and saying things that make me think badly of them.

My theory is, from the promo for next episode Laura is saying "There is a very good chance I'm going to be very hurt in this", I think the rest of the sentence is "but I am falling in love with you" (from the initial series promo).
If it is Elise's voice at the end of the promo saying "I am in love with you", IMO she sounds too emotional to be saying this next episode, i.e. she would say it during the final date.
So if that is the pattern, another tick in the Elise is F1 column!

Another thing I have noted - Laura has not used the word 'love' yet in regards to Matty, even in her to camera pieces. This was highlighted in the 'L' word video on tenplay, where she was not featured (but many others were, Elise, Tara, Flo etc.)
I think it might have been edited specifically this way so that the payoff is greater when she does use the 'L' word, but it has come across as quite odd and deliberate to me -  that she kept saying 'I want this' last episode, even in her to camera piece, even in her convo with her sister where it seemed like she deliberately avoided using the word 'love'. Thoughts?
