I'm happy to see more of the Canadians on our tv this time around but some of them are 5 minute versions. It's during the Olympics that I really miss being able to watch everything, like when we lived in Canada.
It's fantastic coverage. I have to brag because every single Olympic they outdo themselves. The CBC website is also great with live updates. What I love is the extensive work they put behind the seasons to showcase individual Canadian athletes that was filmed ahead of of the games. We get to see their hometowns, their training and their families. Also, they are fair to all countries as are their commentaries. There's never any bias. Their excitement down to the top three to the finish lines comes through regardless of country.

Re: Olympics - Discussion
@Norcalgal They explained why the countries were ordered like they were. The Chinese don't have an traditional alphabet. They have symbols and how the countries were ordered was based on how many brush strokes it takes to spell out the name of each country. Australia was one of the ones that had the most, so they were at the end.
It was kind of annoying since I want to see certain countries and normally you know where in the order they would appear, but not this time. I came in part way through and didn't know if I had missed Canada.

I'm finding it hard to determine which country the athletes are from. The countries are not predominantly shown on the outfits?

They have abbreviations on their legs at least some of the time but IA that it's often hard to tell, @GuardianAngel.
I was so excited by Madeline Schizas' great short program to get the Canadians into the team figure skating finals! She rocked in her first Olympic appearance!

I always love the Olympics! I watch sports that I'd never watch normally. We have Peacock channel for a short time and are keeping it until after the Olympics because it will have a lot more sports and they're a world feed so we won't just get the U.S. featured sports.

@albean99 that sounds perfect! I'm hoping CBC will be as exceptional as they always are. I just checked opening ceremony is 1:30pm Eastern but CBC will be replaying at 7pm. I imagine a lot of the stations will do the same.

Thanks @Sprite for all the pics you captured. I moved the posts to this Olympic thread.
Sprite wrote:On a brighter note the Olympics opening ceremony is going on in Paris right now. First time ever that the opening ceremony is not being held in a stadium, but rather sailing down the Seine. I have to say that it I like it. It would be better if it wasn't raining, but it is still fun. Lady Gaga did great. All the performers along the route at different historic attractions. France is already the most visited country in the world and Paris one of the most visited cities...sometimes the most visited depending on who reports on the statistics. It will surely increase the tourists.

Sadly, IMO the Canadian team uniforms look hideous this year.

Celine was incredible!

Norcalgal wrote:@Sprite I also liked the changes of the Opening Ceremony, despite the rain. Laughed at the library scene that was focused on literature and romance (menage a troit?)! That would definitely be French! Such a sense of humor.
So many highlights - focusing on the tenants of their post-revolution constitution was a history lesson, especially when interwoven with such iconic moments - Les Miserable and fashion, eg. Loved the cancan music and the dramatic hard rock set into windows in such an old building! Lady Gaga - was she really singing or was it pre-recorded? Still very enjoyable. The highlight was Celine, naturally. Felt badly for the athletes who were in the rain and hope it doesn't affect their best performance. I thought Paris was showcased in its best light - so many memorable landmarks with dramatic lighting and effects.
The floating balloon for the Olympic flame was so cool! Very imaginative opening ceremony. Some of my memories of it will rank right up there with the Queen and James Bond during the London ceremony!
Norcalgal wrote:@Sprite Yes, the Canadian uniform are one hot mess - too reminiscent of the Alberta fires to me.
Sprite wrote:@Norcalgal I read that Lady Gaga was prerecorded, but still. I really enjoyed the variety they had. There was something everywhere. If you were in the city, I think you would have been able to catch some part of the ceremony even if you didn't have a ticket. Loved that people who lived on the route could just watch out their windows. I thought it was very innovative, funny and self deprecating, which I appreciated. It's amazing that the cauldron is at the Louvre where everyone can see it. I was really surprised that they used so many foreigners during the ceremony...Lady Gaga, Celine, Rafa, Serena, etc. Usually, countries love to showcase their own people so that was a real surprise.
I would have loved to be there. I loved Paris when I was there and it is one of my favourite places that I have ever travelled to. It was lovely seeing some of the places we went while I watched the show.

Re: Olympics - Discussion
I loved the opening ceremonies because they were unique to Paris! My favorite moment was Celine Dion and it was so touching to see her perform so well after all the health issues she's had. I also really enjoyed the singer who did Imagine. I didn't love Lady Gaga's performance although heard there were problems with the music.
Other favorite moments were the teams on the boats, everyone looking past the rain to enjoy everything, the horse on the Seine, the way they did the torch along the way and while lighting the unique cauldron and hot air balloon.
As for coverage in the U.S. NBC is putting spoilers in a lot of the titles for some reason. I like what Peacock has done although it's a bit overwhelming until you figure out how to navigate the Olympic coverage.

@albean99 I agree. I loved it because it was so unique and specific to Paris.
I watch on CBC in Canada and as usual the coverage is great. Loved getting to see Rafa and Alcaraz playing doubles tennis. They were so good. I hope they go far.
