Going back to the point I always make, the central "lie" of this franchise is that the brides and grooms are selected from among thousands of potential matches by experts applying psych/scientific method. In fact, the three experts are matching from a TINY pool of cleared, eligible, willing people, and throw people together on a plausible for TV thin basis of compatibility. I feel sad when I see scenes of them trying to figure out why they were matched. Ha.

And multiple the thin-ness of the pool by a large factor indeed for a "replacement" match like Heather to Derek.

This show is a fraud on the participants, and in a way on the viewers -- trust in the Match is the only basis on which the kernel of a potential for a real marriage is going to blossom.

I was thinking while watching this episode that perhaps Heather & Derek were paired purely because they're so NOT right for each other.  By the time they got married, TPTB would've known the other two couples were doing well.  If they were scrambling for a replacement couple, why not choose one who'd get everyone talking (no press is bad press, after all).  I just can't for the life of me see any way that Derek & Heather would've been paired otherwise.  

And I can totally see where Heather came from.  You just marry a stranger, you're all optimistic at things working out but then he has this habit that (a) can get you in legal trouble and (b) is something you don't condone and you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.  So for the first few days you ignore what's going on b/c you don't want to rock the boat.  But it continues and starts to really grate on you until you have to address it.  

So yes, while she waited five days, I see her more as trying to be as accommodating as she could until she hit her breaking point when she realized things weren't going to change unless she said something.  I think she gave him the benefit of the doubt vs being on a high horse...

There's absolutely nothing appealing about Derek to me AT ALL. I would've packed it up after the fight on the balcony.

^^^Great posts everyone! I think you are right about having 2 couples that are doing well so let's throw in a wild card for ratings with a controversial issue.

This couple is so "not going to make it." I hope they do not drag us through the mud of six weeks. JMO.

This is what was leaked, and what seems right from circumstantial evidence about post-"experiment" filming venues, tenses, etc. Derek's comments are always in the vein of faulting Heather for rushing to judgment, etc., which I interpreted as a "meta-" over-arching comment indicating that she bolted before the 6 weeks were up -- thereby freaking him out no doubt that his final TV Reputation will be as an (unreformed) pothead, by the way -- and thus leading to SM frenetic activity.

What's with his "unfiltered" comments about romance in the future with his wife? Did y'all catch that?

I don't agree with your assessment of Derek, calling him pothead when you ve only seen 5days of his life but that's my opinion, i respect yours.

Well we know someone backed out the night before so that would mean they needed a replacement couple.
It had to take another few weeks to tell them they have been chosen and give them the 2 weeks to prepare like the other couples were given.
So I really think they had to be the replacement couple, the other 2 couples were married very early in the month.
Also, the other couples had the outside venue at the hotel and Derek and Heather had an indoor venue, it looked like the lobby of the hotel actually with curtains up. It was not a ballroom area in the hotel. I have been to The Diplomat several times and I thought where they held the ceremony was really strange. Perhaps they had no more venue space for a last minute ceremony and they had to set up the lobby to accommodate them.
The Diplomat is a beautiful hotel on Hollywood Beach and very popular for weddings and parties.
We held our parents 50th wedding anniversary celebration there in 2009.
