When you sign a contract that has a clause that says the show can portray you in anyway they want and humiliate you, you would think it would give most pause if not a run out the door and forget the show feeling.

Litta, I feel for you. My rose colored glasses are forever broken, too. Look at my username for goodness sake! Haha. I think that's why I enjoy the first seasons of other franchises... there's less money and skill to manipulate and less fame to grab than in the US.
That being said, even characters like Faith, who are naive and don't seem to be after their 15 minutes of fame make me think that is just an act on some level. Why else would they want to go on a television show if they are truly not in it for fame on some level? I guess I see the nice ones as just as likely to be in it for fame, the only difference being they are more likable people. JMOAA.

AllAboutLove wrote:After watching the episode I can only imagine that the most gullible and naive of contestant goes on this show and claims to be "exploited".
It's 2015 and despite their shock to the bubble, and as much as I loathe TPTB, this show made me realize that, after so many seasons of this show in the US, there is no conceivable way that these contestants are completely ignorant of what it takes for them to get their 15 minutes of fame and that fame is likely their sole reason for going on the show.
Essentially, it's nothing more than a parasitic-symbiotic relationship that goes both ways. Basically a love-hate relationship with contestants and TPTB that they both need to feed off of in order to get what they both selfishly want (ratings or fame). And if the contestants want to get more fame they will need to play the game in order to stay on the show and extend their screen time and thus, SM followers, sponsorships, etc, etc.
Sad to say, but I feel less sorry for the contestants after watching this. It's horrific what TPTB do to get what they want, but it's more horrific what a desire for 15 minutes of fame will cause contestants to willingly sign up for. In today's SM world and after so many seasons, I am just not buying this "I am clueless" rhetoric.
Interesting thoughts AAL
I watched UNreal and everything Josh S. the "stripper" Lawyer from this past season said came to my mind. He went on to obviously get publicity, he was obviously slaty cos he wouldn't stay longer than one night when that was promised to him...but even HE could not anticipate the extent of the personal manipulation that his producer was going to go to. Josh's producer made friends with Josh's friends, promised them tickets to the AFTR, acted very nice and thoughtful texting and communicating with them after first filming his bio segment...hung out with him and built a personal relationship with him, all which ended up being to convince him to make an entrance taking off both his pants and shirt when he kept insisting that he would not do it. Then keeping on harping on him till he relented and agreed to get his shirt off after which CH totally throws him under the bus. I saw everything he described as a scene from UNreal -- quite precisely. His interview is a very worthwhile listen if you're curious how close to reality UNreal actually is.
I think people go in with the understanding that they'll be portrayed however the show wishes BUT I don't think there's a clause that states that personal relationships of trust and psychological profiling data and personal history data will be used to hook, prode and manipulate them exactly where they can provide that "best tv moment". The scene where the villain girl's personal history of having lost her family was used against her to get a reaction from her -- that is not something anyone on this show can go in knowing.
Seeing this scripted show made that clearer to me than ever and reading Sarah Shapiro's interview as she described it all as contestants coming in thinking they can game the system when "the system cannot be gamed" I totally buy all that...
I don't fault contestants one bit for being personally, emotionally, psychologically and their whole personal histories exploited when all they really knew they were going into was potentially some embarrassing scenes cos of what they had control of showing about themselves. Sure they could be seeking fame and 15min exposure that does not mean they sign away their right to not be emotionally manipulated. we can maybe say contestants go into it knowing how the edit can be messed with. I doubt we can say there's anything transparent about the process that clarifies that manipulation is part of the game. and that's the part that's the most icky and revealing and jarring and honestly -- necessary about the show UNreal...I'm a fan of sarah shapiro...you go girl!! for revealing all this and showing what MF's exploitative and painful truth looks like to the outside world. Can't wait to watch more and I hope the show becomes a big hit!

Re: UnREAL - Discussions - *Sleuthing - Spoilers*
^ I guess for me, I don't see it as one-sided like I used to with the big, bad TPTB preying on the poor, innocent contestants. They certainly do and are but the contestants I don't feel are innocent at all. Whether they are aware of the extent of the manipulation or edit matters little to me when their motive to be on television is primarily fame-seeking. At the end of the day, the majority of them get more out of being on the show than when they signed up.
The thing that stood out to me from Josh Seiter's interview was this: he said that he would never go on BIP because it is an elimination show and the only reality tv he would do is if he is the star. That settled it for me. It's all about "me, me, me" when it comes to this show: whether TPTB or the contestants -- they are in it for themselves. What one is attracted to is what one attracts. There's a reason these people choose to go on this show... and IMO, and especially talking of recent seasons, the majority do so for their own selfish gain.
As for Shapiro, in another interview she talked about how contestants are now so savvy that they will characterize themselves when being interviewed. They will say, "I can't do that because I am the villain type girl" or whatever. Again, I am not buying whatever these contestants are selling. They do after all, drink from the same fountain of TPTB.

Re: UnREAL - Discussions - *Sleuthing - Spoilers*
my post got lost -- I'm having trouble loading this site but essentially I find it very difficult to see individual humans who might have been a part of this show in many different ways as uniformly sophisticated about the workings of this show.
putting each contestant and their level of “reality sophistication" to be compared against a very clear system/business with yearly/biannual refined and reinvented machinations / manipulation…. just doesn't jive to me… it also doesn’t seem to factor in the level of classified information (personal data, personal history, psychological profiling), contractual power and trust-based relationship building tptb applies through TEAMS i.e. multiple people to each of these people.
there are literally *teams* that are studying and analyzing and adjusting approaches about how each contestant is dealt and nudged to “play a role”. these techniques are honed over time and while some contestants are aware of the role they are supposed to play it cant be true for everyone. the nature of the element of authenticity requires that people go in blind for the most part unless we have the likes of courtney and vienna etc. there are many contestants likely never been on reality tv, likely never studied it too closely...without full awareness of how the show works and to the extent that it does what it does …these people are coming on the show with a very wide range of intention/awareness and savvy... some of these people even got signed up for the show by family...some people didn't even know what the show was or maybe their mom is a big fan or their sister. I just don't see any of that as an even match up with tptb whose JOB (yes that's right...these people make their LIVING from this) it is to work these people to get "good tv"...
at the same time I'm curious to see more of UNreal and to find uncanny resemblances like the moment the villain girl flipped out at the protagonist producer/siri/rachael and when Kupah flipped out at élan — how ironic that these episodes aired on the same exact day ...now THAT is reality gold IMHO

Re: UnREAL - Discussions - *Sleuthing - Spoilers*
Finally got to watch. The actor who plays Chris Hansen has his mannerisms nailed to a T.
The edit of drunken Rachel interrupting the FRC, turning it around to make it look like the dumpee went ape sh*t and it was ratings gold had a real ring of truth.
The Chet character doesn't look much like MF but so far perfectly captures his sleazy, slimy personality.

Thank you Sparkler! I don't know RS site. I will wait till it's on cable.

Re: UnREAL - Discussions - *Sleuthing - Spoilers*
This show was really, really good. Best new drama I have seen in a long time! I didn't plan on watching it, but saw so many posts referencing it here on the board.
It confirmed everything we suspected about producer manipulation behind the scenes at these types of shows. Really despicable. But intriguing in an absolutely dark train wreck type of way. And I felt absolutely horrible after watching- but I couldn't stop thinking about the behind the scenes manipulation and the thought and planning that the producers and their "teams" of shrinks, handlers, researchers, etc put in to get to that point where they could manipulate the contestants like that. But I will watch again and feel guilty (and probably go to confession, but that is a topic for another conversation )- BUT that is how you know it is GOOD TV.

Re: UnREAL - Discussions - *Sleuthing - Spoilers*
haven't read these but bach castoffs deanna and melissa share their views on the UNreal show -- according to RS it got very high reviews a 90% on rotten tomatoes for example
https://www.yahoo.com/tv/unreal-bachelor-melissa-schreiber-120462079130.htmlThe debut of Lifetime’s new series UnREAL — a scripted dramedy about the behind-the-scenes drama that takes place at a Bachelor-like reality show called Enchanted — left the Yahoo TV staff with several questions. While we all know that “reality” TV isn’t exactly real, did UnREAL get the level of the genre’s unreality right? Are the producers really that manipulative? And what would a former Bachelor/Bachelorette/Bachelor Pad contestant have to say about the show?
Fortunately, Melissa Schreiber — a veteran of The Bachelor and Bachelor Pad — agreed to tackle these pressing questions for us.
Burning Question: Are the women on The Bachelor really not allowed to get out of the limo to pee during shooting?
Melissa Schreiber Says: I will never forget being brought to Bachelor Pad in the minivan — not limo. I had to pee soooooo badly but they kept telling me to “hold tight, it won’t be long” — that was for about 2 hours. You are alone in the van to Bachelor Pad, not with other contestants. It’s just you and the driver. A handler — or in my case, a producer — came and hung out with me a few times and chatted while we waited to be allowed to pull into the driveway.
Burning Question: Do producers regularly ask for more than one “take” of a scene?
Melissa Says: Yes, more often during rose ceremonies and dates. For example, I was on a date where we were doing “skits” to make a commercial for the American Red Cross. We literally had to do each scene like 30 times. It took hours. Producers are also always around telling us what to talk about with one another, and then they would ask us to “say that again” if they get something that they like.
Burning Question: How do the producers on UnREAL compare to the real-life producers you worked with on The Bachelor and Bachelor Pad?
Melissa Says: They are beyond similar. Very warm and compassionate, and you really think that they are your true friends. I did get lucky enough to make some life-long friendships with a couple of the producers, but for the most part, they have a “job” to do and their job is to get the drama going, and they will do whatever it takes. When I got sent home, I refused to talk in the limo and my producer tried so hard to get me to talk — she begged, she cried, and she told me that her job was on the line if I didn’t talk.
Burning Question: Who was your favorite character and why?
Melissa Says: Shiri Appleby [who plays Rachel] for sure! She is clearly mentally broken down by what the senior producers make her do, but she is darn good at it. She comes across as naturally real and relatable, and you can totally become her best friend — but at the same time she is secretly ruthless.
Burning Question: Which of your real-life experiences on The Bachelor/Bachelor Pad should the UnREAL producers use in an episode?
Melissa Says: Well, for starters here is a summary of my time on Bachelor Pad — tt was narrated by fellow Pad alum Michelle Money: Youtube vid
Also, Erica [Rose] reminded me of an episode on our season of Bachelor Pad where they had us do an egg toss challenge. They lined us all up standing next to each other, blindfolded with painted targets on our backs. Then the opposite sex had to answer questions like the following “Who is the least attractive girl in the house?” and then they have to throw an egg at the girl who they felt was the “least attractive.” There were a series of about a dozen, not-so-lovely questions like that.
http://www.people.com/article/unreal-deanna-pappas-stagliano-bachelor-bachelorette-premiere-reactionLet's start with your own experiences. Do you remember any funny behind-the-scenes moments from your own experience that were similar to UnREAL?
Night one is really so intense and a roller coaster of emotions! I remember on my night one of filming The Bachelorette, I was wearing this gorgeous designer gown that was paper-thin and way too long for me. So the stylist draped it on the ground and stuck me in 7-in. heels! It was taped down onto my body in almost every space it possibly could be taped down. I could barely move! And for some reason, almost every guy who stepped out of the limo insisted on spinning me in a circle to get a good look at me! At one point, I almost fell from getting tangled in my beautiful dress while being seconds away from exposing my Bachelorette tatas!!
Speaking of entrances, The Bachelor is known for memorable introductions on night one. Who was most memorable on your season?
The most memorable entrance from my season had to be Jeremy Anderson. He was the last guy out of the limo, and he was gorgeous – very dapper. I remember him being the only guy who didn't seem as nervous as I was, and he actually hung around to talk to me! He didn't rush off inside as soon as he got out of the limo. It made me feel safe and that he genuinely wanted to get to know me. In that situation, I appreciated that so much. Just watching UnREAL and seeing the over-the-top entrances from the girls absolutely reminds me of the crazy impressions people try to make on night one. It's like, in the two days after you come to L.A. to be on the show, you become desperate to make a lasting impression and be remembered by someone you don't even know.
Some of the entrances were reshot on UnREAL. Did you ever have to reshoot anything when you were on either show?
Of course we had to reshoot things! It is television. We only reshot parts of the show like my entrance into a room or rehearsed bits with Chris Harrison, for example. We never reshot genuine conversations or real moments that actually happened with real reactions.
What did you think of the ladies' stereotypes (the single mom, the virgin) that were presented on UnREAL?
I hate stereotypes. It seems that the show has them every season. It works. There is always the drunk person on night one, the hot chick that everyone is jealous of, the person with the sob story and then in the end it seems like there are four or five people that are mostly there for the right reasons. I guess it makes for good TV.
We saw lots of waiting around on set. Was that true to "reality"?
The old saying goes, "Hurry up and wait." Every day it was like this. There are a ton of people to get set up for the shoot – not just the Bachelors and Bachelorettes. There are also several camera men, audio people, producers, PA's and don't ever forget that one girl who decides she needs to rush upstairs to put her makeup on because she wouldn't be caught dead on national television without her full face. It's a lot and, at times, very draining and exhausting, not only for the cast but I'm sure for the crew as well.
Of course we know alcohol plays a big part on The Bachelor, and apparently on the show-within-the-show, Everlasting, too. Any memories you can share?
People are definitely drinking. Sometimes a lot. I guess at times when you are feeling nervous or even bored, it's easier to have a few cocktails because there is a never ending supply. I remember when I was on The Bachelor with Brad Womack, there was one point when I was just feeling overwhelmed with the whole process. I mean, I had never seen the show and didn't know what to expect. So my bestie on the show, McCarten, and I decided to have a few beers and sneak off to the hot tub below the pool because it was never used and we knew there were no cameras down there and no one would find us. I remember I was wearing a sun dress. I stepped into the hot tub just to soak my feet and BAM! I fell all the way in, and under I went. It was hilarious at the time, but it hurt so bad. McCarten, being the best friend a girl could ask for, snuck upstairs to the house while I hid to grab some clean, dry clothes for me. The last thing I wanted was to be filmed like this and embarrassed. She cleaned me all up, and we never told anyone. Except for days, every time I was in a swimsuit, Brad kept asking me about the humongous black-and-blue bruise on my lower back!
So you're saying cameras aren't everywhere on The Bachelor like they are on Everlasting? Was it ever hard to get away from them?
In my experience, I didn't feel that way. I thought they were really respectful. Plus, we knew when they would be filming. They didn't come sneaking into the bathroom when I was naked. There are definitely cameras everywhere and microphones, too, but that's what we signed up for, right?!
What about the producers? Are they really everywhere, too?
The producers are definitely everywhere. Just like you saw on UnREAL, they are in your conversations, dressed up as waiters, hidden at times so you don't know they are listening – and in the limos, too! No contestant is ever really alone. When I was the Bachelorette, I had my own personal producer. Thankfully, I loved him and considered him a genuine friend. Even with genuine friends, we get tired of being with them 24/7. I mean, no one in real life likes to make out with two camera people, one audio person and several producers watching in on the show, do they?!?!
What about when you do know they're there? What are the interviews really like?
They're … interesting. Sometimes you are secluded where none of the other contestants can hear you, which gives you the courage to be more candid and honest. For those who are trash talkers, I'm sure this is their dream scenario. They can also be tough at times. The producers do try very hard to make you comfortable so that you can feel free to be as honest as you can. Then sometimes, if you are giving enough emotion or honesty, that's when they pull out the tough questions which can hit you right where they hurt!
It seems natural, then, that we saw a few breakdowns – what was the biggest breakdown you remember from your time on either show?
I remember a few breakdowns from when I was filming The Bachelorette. The first one being the barbecue with the guys. I'll never live that down. I remember being exhausted. Those early days in filming are so long because there are so many guys and just me. Every time I turned around, I had to film something, and I was just simply tired and craved some alone time. This day in particular, I was annoyed because we were all tired and this one guy in particular was super hungover from staying up drinking the night before and just making things tough for everyone else the next day. I just remember loosing it. My anger was aimed for him but came off as if I was angry at all the guys. I took my experience very seriously, and I tried to be as genuine and honest as the show would allow me. So I got really frustrated at this one guy for making things complicated for us all. I didn't think it was right for him, or anyone else for that matter, to be there if they weren't there for the right reasons, and I wanted to be very blunt and brutally honest about that. I gave up my job, my life and was away from my family to try and find my "happily ever after." My biggest fear throughout was being lied to by any of the guys about whether they were there for the right reasons or not. Trust is a big thing for me.
Finally, let's talk about the rose ceremonies. Fans would love to know what they're really like. Spill!
The rose ceremonies are so long! I know I'm not the only contestant who has ever said that. They usually start at dark which is around 8 p.m. and last until 8 a.m. the next morning. So, when you see people sobbing after only night one, mix those emotions with alcohol, exhaustion, rejection and a producer probing you to talk about a person not loving you. It's really tough. Even as the Bachelor or Bachelorette, it is so hard to let someone go after a rose ceremony knowing they will experience all this. The emotional roller coaster is tough for everyone on the show.
