He said that her reaction was extreme. Doug did apologize and promised not to lie to her. He's a really sweet guy. I'm leaning towards the she doesn't deserve him crowd now.

Seems like things are fine next week! Looking forward to it!

Thanks GA! It wasn't that bad. I could tell that Jamie even knew she was overthinking it.

Anything I post means it's Just My Opinion.  Don't feel like posting it every time I post. So, I thought I'd get that out of the way.

I agree with everyone that said that Jamie overreacted to the whole smoking thing with Doug. His response to her was juvenile, so he's not getting off unscathed, but to equate that lie will turn into something worse was a bit much. Saw a lot of Twitter comments saying that Jamie was always looking for a way out and she would use this as her jumping off point. I could tell that Doug felt really bad about the whole thing though.

Smoking CAN be a major issue, and turnoff, for couples in new relationships though (I know couples who have broken up over it, and some non-smokers routinely refuse to date smokers), so I got where Jamie was coming from, and especially because she does have trust issues due to what must have been a truly ghastly childhood. It sounds like Doug also overreacted when she confronted him about the smoking, and got a little nasty, so he's also at fault for how he handled it IMO. It was very interesting to learn that the divorce rate is considerably higher among smokers, so, considering Jamie is not YET in love with Doug at this point, if she couldn't get past this issue, I wouldn't think that made her a terrible person. It would definitely be a concern for me to make sure that Doug was sincere in REALLY quitting, and not occasionally sneaking cigarettes, because that could mean that he would someday go back to smoking regularly, which I suspect Jamie, as a nurse, would NOT be happy about.

Doug is a great guy, but he is not without faults and he is not always blameless.

I work in the middle of three hospitals. You would be shocked at the amount of doctors and nurses who smoke. I am not watching this show, so I am not taking any sides. But quitting smoking is extremely hard. I think support for someone who is quitting is important and to realize that slips happen, but the sincere desire to quit with the right support is important. Shame or harshness will actually more often than not lead the person back to smoking.

I can understand Jamie's reaction. Jamie had said it wasn't really about the smoking, it was about Doug's reaction to her asking. For most "normal" people that don't have such severe trust issues, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. But for Jamie, who, just met and married Doug and is trying very hard to trust and open up to him, it was kind of a slap in the face to her and brought back a fear she's trying to overcome. Jamie needs to learn that men aren't perfect, but that doesn't mean they're all d-bags either. I thought it was great that they met with the therapist immediately after to deal with the issue before it got out of hand.

I'm sure some health professionals smoke, and if I'm not mistaken, there is actually a high percentage of alcoholism among doctors as well. I just wonder if Jamie strongly requested a non-smoker when she completed her questionnaire; I got the feeling that she has issues with smoking (coming from a family where its members were addicts could make her wary of getting involved with anyone prone to addictions of any kind), and if so, I could see her reacting badly to finding out that Doug still smoked (he apparently told her, and most probably the show, that he was an EX-smoker). And yes, they are married now, and need to support the other as far as helping them overcome problems, but if she was lied to about what those problems were before she signed on, I can see why her initial reaction was anger, not compassion. And again, if she were already in love with Doug, I suspect she'd feel differently, but she isn't there yet.

I can totally see her point. I have always told my son (and husband too) that whatever he is covering up for isn't nearly as bad as lying about it. I might be mad about the behavior that led to the lie but not nearly as angry as I am or would be about the lie. Tell me the truth and we will work through it: lie and I can't trust you.

I think Doug's response to the Dr.'s request to apologize was heartfelt and very nice. I think she must have believed that it was true since they seem to be doing okay now.
