Reminds me of a friend who quit smoking and snapped a rubber band around her wrist whenever she felt the need to smoke.  I have heard of this for OCD and anxiety as well.

Papa Murray had thyroid cancer didn't he (I thought someone here posted that he did).  Purple flat rubber bracelets are used to support the fight against both pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer.

So it might be something like that.

I remember before Lance Armstrong was outed as a cheater, that almost every guy I met had a yellow livestrong band around their wrist.

I have a blue one in support of a good friend who had lung cancer.

It is a behavioral/thought stopping technique based on classical conditioning (Pavlov and the dogs) that was used quite commonly say 20 years ago or so The client is asked to wear the rubber band like-thing on his/her wrist with the intent of stopping the undesirable thought (an example would be as you suggested: "I want a cigarette") by snapping the band once (so a type of aversion therapy). The individual begins to associate the thought with the undesirable response (e.g. pain of the snapping) thereby leading to the extinguishing of the thought.
