Penned Turkeys probably can't fly.  Wild turkeys are a whole other matter!

I can't believe others remember that episode of WKRP after so many years. I don't think I've ever laughed at a TV show as much, before or since.

I try to catch that episode every Thanksgiving - someone's usually got it playing! I loose it at Les Nessmen saying "W.....K......R......P" but the real killer is when Les says "it's like turkeys mounted a counter-attack."

I look back on the farm so fondly (drove past it last weekend). I had to explain to my kids what an Ice Cream Social was - they still have them - The three churches in town rotated who hosted and that's where we got our High School Yearbooks signed by friends. In groups of four, we would get our Ice Cream Crank, salted ice, cream, eggs and choose what flavor to make, take turns sitting on top (to hold it steady) while the other person cranked and then we'd all go around and taste each other's flavors while collecting signatures.

I was talking with my husband (who was my Prom Date) about the downsides and he quickly pointed out that we can easily go to concerts, movies, theatre, dinner (okay, other than the Milk Maid Diner), shopping, and a host of other conveniences where we are now. Seeing a movie in a theatre was a BIG thing to us because there was only one in a 40 mile radius. We have talked about buying a small place when we retire and raising sheep and goats, but he is right - I would miss how easily we can get to things now. That's a real consideration for any of Chris's contestants.

The nursery school my girls went to had ice cream socials and cake walks.   
Sometimes simple is fun--and so missed, especially when watching the nightly news.

interesting - not really anamoured with chris he's very composed maybe too much but the Aussie bach are composed and they're not annoying -- curious what kind of "farmer housewife" aspirants will come out for this one (unfortunately for all of us that might not be a very diverse bunch but maybe it is a bit more broad depending on the type of city it is which could also provide some other opportunities...)

I could just imagine the props the first night!!!   

I grew up in NE Missouri on a farm, 5 miles from town. Town being population 2000. The closest WalMart was 30 mintues away and Target was an hour, 15 minutes away.  Same for a mall.   My dad is still farming crops, and has beef cattle.  Honestly, I liked growing up on a farm.  I wish I lived in the country now.  Farm life isn't for everyone, but I wouldn't consider it bleak.  There are plenty of people who choose to live in the country after living in the city.  It's not like we don't have cable, the internet, social activities ect.  There is a sense of community like no other.  People stop to help you out without giving it a second thought. If you live within 5 miles, you are considered a neighbor.  Yes, it may take longer to get to the city.   I find the most serenity after being at my parents or in laws who also live in the country.  I would love to have my children to grow up on a farm, I had great experiences, and would love for them to have that as well.

Just because you live on a farm doesn't mean that is what your profession will be. I had plenty of neighbors growing up who were nurses who commuted 30-45 minutes to work at a hospital.  I am guessing that a lot of people who are on this board who have a much longer commute to work.

Your heart can't choose what your love does.  I have an old coworker who married a farmer, commutes an hour and 15 minutes to work because she loves what she does.  Is it ideal, no, but she wouldn't have it any other way.  

Just because you can't imagine why anyone else would want to live in that area of Iowa (which I currently live 1.5 hours away from where Chris lives) doesn't mean that it isn't a great fit for someone else.

Thanks for your insight, milo05. I think it's very possible to enjoy life on a farm with someone you love. I just have trouble thinking Fleiss is going to cast very many women who are prepared for that.
