Oh JuanPa, you really are clueless.
Actually at least what I could see on his feed without signing up for twitter (I refuse) was the he just was talking about the "R" word in his country.
We may not like it here in USA, but in different countries, different things are acceptable.
I had a Canadian tell a classroom full of students that Florida is the penis of the USA. I personally found that offensive, since I was born and raised in Florida, but was told it was funny and part of being a Canadian.
I also work with a lot of men from India, who actually refuse to listen to any idea I have as being equal because I am a woman. It is part of their culture and I have to hold it in and adjust to allow for an okay work environment.
So even in the good old USA, people from other countries are allowed to keep their culture and beliefs.
Umngirl, correct me if I am wrong but, as I understand it, JuanPa retweeted something that contained the r word - I can't locate the tweet - his mom has also asked for its link but I think it was in Spanish. Apparently, when confronted by the use of the word, JuanPa tweeted:
Juan Pablo Galavis™ @JuanPaGalavis 3h
In Venezuela the R word is USED commonly and by NO means is to OFFEND anyone... #Relax #DifferentCulture #Respect
And he is getting a lot of flack about that tweet. His mom seems very upset about it and tweeted that she herself has a hearing disability - and that in Venezuela the r word is used to describe someone uneducated. If the tweet was in Spanish, JuanPa would not have known that it would be taken so offensively.
I can only imagine how his family must be counting the minutes for this to be all over.
I'm counting them down. Things are getting ridiculous. Finding every little thing to carry on about.
Me too. And I have just noticed that his sister Anna just entered the fray as she attempted to defend him and was talked to in a very disparaging way by someone.

I'm sorry, but using the r word is never okay with me, especially in a mocking/joking way. I'd say that even if one of my favorite contestants used it. Heck, I told my coworker not to use it just last week. JuanPa retweeting that and saying he loved it isn't about not being a fan of his. And the English as a second language thing is getting old.

The price JP has to pay for being the bachelor. A lot of criticism and nitpicking on his accent, english communication, cultural differences. etc.
I just hope the money is big enough to compensate for the hassle. It's not only him that is being affected, his mom and sister were also upset.

If you read that it is nothing but sarcasm and meant to be funny. NOT that it's okay to use the R word ever, they should of thought of a different word for the little "saying" but I myself did think it was kind of funny besides the R word. I think he saw it, thought it was funny too so he retweeted it without thinking of course. He hasn't learned that everything he says is going to be picked apart regardless of what it is. I do think some people need to lighten up a little like he said. He is just getting destroyed no matter what he says at this point!

He did, however, explain that the "r" word is used to mean uneducated and, if you read the piece of the paragraph that shows, it can be taken in that context. And, he he didn't say he loved the word but the paragraph. I personally do not take offense here, and I do believe that I am as easily offended as anyone by slurs of any kind.

That someone is trying to stir trouble. She's using bad language and tweeting a lot of people even Nikki.

Yes, I agree. His family will be so happy.
When I think of all the things I've heard in my lifetime, sometimes even a family member or a friend, sometimes idiotic or even awful things I myself have said, well ....

Re: Bachelor 18 - Tweet/Facebook Updates - Discussion
So if I'm reading this correctly, @albert***** tagged Juan Pablo adding the comment "I hope you can read this" which implies JP is too dumb to read it. Juan Pablo then laughs at himself and retweets. No one has commented on the f-bombs. Guess that's not offensive?
I'm offended when people are called idiot, stupid, a**hole, bigot, etc., but maybe I'm just too sensitive.
Carry on

While the "English as a second language" excuse is old- because Juan Pa has lived in this country for a long time and should have figured out before now how Americans view the world, I did read an article (either NY Times or Wall Street Journal) a couple of years ago which might shed some light on the subject.
The subject of the article was linguistics and the part language plays in brain/moral development (for lack of a better term)- it was mostly about why there is failure in diplomacy even when between fluent, sophisticated speakers of languages. The whole point was that there are certain ideas or phrases that may exist in one language and not exist in another. For example, there are world languages which don't really have tense.... so concepts of past (especially distant past) or future (and very distant future) are difficult to grasp. An example from Spanish would be the use of reflexive verbs.... which is very interesting with repeat to admitting fault. Where an American would say, "I broke that window", the equivalent phrase in Spanish would literally say that the window broke itself, and the idea that one might have to take responsibility would be foreign and, indeed, offensive.
So yes, I can see why JuanPa gets in trouble for having a different view of the world. That being said, unless he is living in a total Hispanic/Venezuelan bubble, he needs to embrace the meanings of the society in which he dwells. Since it it said that he wants to make a name for himself in the US, he will need to learn to think as the mainstream thinks.

Oh dear, I just posted a version of your no go word. Point taken. I honestly never thought of that and oops, I work with challenged youth so you would thinki would be more sensitive and would have made the connection.pbmax wrote:umngirl wrote:I'm sorry, but using the r word is never okay with me, especially in a mocking/joking way.
