So far, I have liked Des. Someone said she didn't have the "it" factor. While that may be true to a point, at least she's comfortable w/herself and w/camera...Which is a nice change from past 'ette seasons.

Re: comparison to Sean: I am so enjoying Des more than Sean, but do agree, TIRED of the recycled dates and scripted drama. Why not show some different aspect of all these guys. Maybe they never expected to last this many seasons and creating new ideas is too much work, they're just riding the train until it ends....

Odd question:

Would ABC ever cancel the rest of the season if it continues to get such low ratings?

When comparing Des' season to Sean's, I think we also need to keep in mind that Sean's season didn't have to compete with The Voice, and had it done so I'm not sure if it would have done any better than Ben's season which is one of the few seasons it beat. IIRC Sean's premiere ep was a series low for the Bachelor franchise with numbers in the 6 million range and around a 2.2 demo. The numbers did pick up as the season went on especially when all the "Virgin Bachelor" headlines came out, that seemed to be his hook.

That being said, for the 2nd ep this season to decline in ratings from the premiere is obviously not a good sign at all. Maybe Des' sob story hook is far less appealing and it doesn't sound like the guys TPTB cast are helping any (I'm not watching the season so can't give an opinion on that). Once The Voice is over it will be interesting to see if the numbers pick up. I expect them to at least a little but if they don't then that's a *really* bad sign. I still think no matter what that they will finish out the season since there are other shows that are doing even worse, like Mistresses which premiered last night to dismal ratings.

The show hit an all-time series low in viewers last night, 5.6 million viewers and 1.7 in the demo. That's down 2/10s of a point from the premier in the demos, which is the only number advertisers (and thus ABC) care about.

Just to reiterate something I posted a week ago for comparisons:

Des: Premier episode May 27, 2013 attracted just 5.8 million viewers and scored a 1.9 rating in the adults 18-49 demo.

The reason every guy has a sob story is in hopes to keep viewers. Next week someone will break a shoe lace during the RC and an ambulance will have to be called yet again---a series first with 2 traumatic injuries in one epi! A broken finger(geez at any pharmacy you can buy a freaking splint-- I would be embarrassed to cry over that and a broken shoe lace--now that is an issue).
Des maybe all these wonderful qualities, but she does not make interesting tv on a show that is on it's last leg.

I still think Desiree is a great choice for Bachelorette. Its the quality of the men that Im having major problems with. Maybe the producers were still
exhausted with Sean's season and have definitely ran out of ideas when they started working on the Bachelorette. So they quicklu just rounded up the models and meatheads with sob stories no matter how lame and prayed that the same fans will just be as invested.

The reason why I loved Sweet Home Alabama, ( maybe it didnt rate too giggling ) were the shenanigans of the men who are naturally funny, they were diverse and interesting. Still remember when Jeremiah (the F1) threw a punch at little Shaun, Big Shaun making fun of Tex, pranks on sleeping Todd, Jeremy crying cause of tattle tale Tex. I was barely half aware of Paige's presence. In Des season, its like Im forced to tolerate grown men acting like girls who sound girlier than Desiree, fake girlfriends, lots of crying, shiny foreheards, oily hair and lots of metrosexual mannerisms.

The producers are to blame for the dismal ratings because they are too afraid to change it up (and insist on sticking with the "right reasons, journey, awesome amazing.. bachelor tired tropes) and can't be bothered to find interesting watchable men who are both funny in groups and with Des.

For the first time ever in Bach and Bachette history, I went to bed before the show ended. I'm sorry to see the ratings aren't great because I really do love these shows but for some reason I haven't been able to get into this season. I wish I knew why. hmmm
I also wonder why there aren't any blond hair guys...not that this means anything to me....just an observation.

Maybe cuz blondes have more fun so won't bother with this boring show? Kidding! It's a sleeper. Makes me sad cuz I really thought Des was a good choice (though I would have preferred Leslie and her wit).

As with many long running shows...Bachelor/ette, DWTS, Survivor...they are all experiencing sagging viewership, but, so is general viewership across the board. People now have more options for watching their programming...PVR, later on Demand, internet, others watch on Netflix, etc, so the Nielsen ratings are no longer a true reflection of how many people watch. This applies to newer shows like the Voice, but, even more so for long running franchises like this one.

I think it was explained last season that Sean's premiere aired up against some big sports event...can't remember what it was, but, after that the numbers increased and did very well. We will see if the same thing occurs after the Voice finishes for this season.

I think it has always been harder to find men to sign up for this show than women. I really don't know why and this season they seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel. Part of the problem...for me at least...is that Des is frankly a downer. Not the real Des, but, the edited Des they are throwing at us constantly. (The same thing happened with Emily.) On top of her sad story, we now seemingly have every male contestant with his own trauma. One or two may be OK, but, this is too much and it is depressing people...at least the people I'm talking to!

I think the appeal of Sean...beyond the all American male with abs of steel...was that he was just a regular, easy going guy, with a normal, happy life who sincerely seemed to be searching for someone. He was also fortunate that they did a really good job of casting his ladies. Other than drama queen/hated bitch Tierra, we only had Ashley with her adoption drama, the rest seemed pretty normal, easy going and happy bunch. Even Cat with her father's mental illness and attempted suicide was fun and the subject was broached once and we moved on. This year it seems they are hammering all these horrid thing into our heads...we now even have pictures! Seriously??? If one trauma is good, 26 must be better.

I think they really need to go back to one or two drama filled lives per show, one villain, some comedic relief and then a few real candidates. Show a bit more of the actual interaction and conversations so we get a better taste for the personalities. And finally, better casting for the candidates will ultimately result in a better lead down the road and some new dates might not hurt either.

JMHO.

People are going to tire hearing about his son real quick!

I wonder if Brad and Juanpa had already told Desiree by the first group date or not?

I only heard him talk about his son to Des, never to the guys. And then he tells that he is always talking about his son, yada yada yada. But then we hear the guys say he never talks about his son and they wonder how his son is doing. That's telling to me....

The poor ratings have nothing to do with Des personally, it's all about MF needing to step up his game and change up the format to attract viewers. SSDD Too much competition out there for him to rely on that same old stale format.

The Bach has to compete with the Voice which is becoming more and more popular every season.... and summer viewership always goes down... there's a reason most networks air reruns lol

I love this season and I see no need for this show to change. Every show goes through its peaks and valleys in viewership. It is true that many people probably just don't watch it on TV all the time. Something else comes up. I know I forgot to watch the first one and had to watch it on their site. They're probably keeping track of those, too.

Desiree is the best Bachelorette they've had. And I love her bunch of guys. For the first time I like most of them. I especially love the spoiled F1. I do not think they're scraping the bottom of the barrel with these guys. I've heard a lot of people say just the opposite about this season of what people are saying on here. That this season is their favorite and they love Desiree and her bunch of guys. That it's renewing their interest in the show. So, some people's attitude about the show might not explain anything.
