Melissa Rycroft Talks Dancing After Baby

Given the high marks from judges that Melissa Rycroft and partner Tony Dovolani have received on Dancing with the Stars' all-star season, it's hard to tell that the reality star is having trouble getting her moves down.

But Rycroft, 29, admits that since giving birth to daughter Ava Grace last year, her body isn't as mobile as it was during her first time competing on ABC's hit show.

"I think Tony and I noticed right off the bat that my body is very different than it was," she recently told PEOPLE during rehearsal.

"Not necessarily shape-wise, but in how it moves, and how – more importantly – it doesn't want to move anymore. I think my hips are mad at me from what they went through. The flexibility is gone. I'm fighting a little bit more, but you know, we'll get there."

Body obstacles or not, the upbeat pair is preparing for icon week, where they get to pick one of their favorite routines from a previous season and put a new spin on it.

"I'm in charge of it," Rycroft says. "We're doing samba, and we have some things in here that 100 percent we know we haven't seen on the show before. And that's exciting because after 14 seasons, you've really seen pretty much everything. When you're not allowed to do lifts, you have to get really creative."

Of the number, Rycroft says, "I think this dance has a 'wow' element, and I think at the end, people are going to go, 'What just happened?'"

'Dancing With the Stars'' Melissa Rycroft Shares Her 'All-Stars' Strategy

The returning cast member and partner Tony Dovolani are aiming for longevity by targeting older voters: "I feel like more of the audience can relate to songs that are more generational."

Tony Dovolani has not made it to a Dancing With the Stars finale in seven seasons, not since the last time he teamed up with Melissa Rycroft.

And now that the All-Stars season finds them reunited, they're not taking any chances on losing votes for anything but their performances. On a recent visit to the duo's Los Angeles rehearsal studio, The Hollywood Reporter was clued in to their game plan: wooing older viewers with classic tunes.

"I like the older stuff," says Rycroft. "I feel like more of the audience can relate to songs that are more generational. My mom and my mother-in-law love them, and they have no clue of any songs that have come out in the last 10 years."

Avoiding the bottom two thus far -- with songs "Big Spender" from Sweet Charity and The Isley Brothers' "Shout" -- while recent cast-offs chose very contemporary tracks from Amy Winehouse and Radiohead, the strategy seems to be working.

This week's Samba will highlight another familiar tune, and Dovolani says he's planned some new tricks for the familiar routine, first performed by season 13 champ J. R. Martinez.

"For me, it's a feather in my cap that I get to experience this," he says of his willing partner. "Now I know what the other professionals feel like. Before I had to teach them how to walk, and now at least I get to teach choreography."
