LEITCHES CREEK — Viewers of a popular American reality show will soon see a Cape Breton contestant stepping out of a limousine to greet a hopeful bachelorette.


Aaron Martell, a high school biology teacher from Leitches Creek, will be one of 25 men vying for the attention of Emily Maynard — star of “The Bachelorette” — when the eighth season of ABC’s smash “Bachelor” spinoff premieres on May 14.

Martell, who has been living in California for the past 11 years, graduated from the University College of Cape Breton (Cape Breton University) and is the son of retired teachers Carol and Fred Martell and brother to Cassandra, who lives in Calgary.

The 36-year-old also spent time practice teaching at area schools in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

“He told us here about a month ago,” said Aaron’s father Fred. “I’m not a reality (TV) person, I don’t watch too many reality shows, but different friends of ours that watch it just can’t wait.”

As part of the show’s format, contestants will compete to receive a rose from Maynard as a symbol of the young woman’s interest in continuing the journey toward a possible marriage proposal.

Any contestants who are not given a rose will be asked to pack their belongings and leave.

“I guess it’s pretty confidential,” said Fred. “They sign contracts, they do background checks, the whole bit.”

According to Carol Martell, Aaron was one of 45 men selected by show producers in the first round of casting. The last time the pair spoke over a month ago, Aaron informed his mother that he would be headed to a mansion in Charlotte, N.C., for filming.

Since that time, the Martells have been unable to speak to their son due to show confidentiality. The family says they haven’t been contacted by the show’s producers regarding any type of filming at home.

“He talked it over with me and he said it was probably a once in a lifetime thing,” said Carol. “He was debating about whether or not he wanted to go. And he said down the road if I don’t, I might regret it.”

This is not the first time Aaron has received attention for his good looks. A modeling job a few years ago led him to an appearance in “Maxim” magazine.

“I think he’s outgoing,” said Fred. “He’s a confident kind of guy. I know there’s lots of girls around for sure, so he always has a date or two when he comes home and things like this.”

According to “Bachelor” blogger Reality Steve, the Cape Breton contestant will recite poetry to Maynard during an episode that sees him on a group date with Maynard and dozen other men.

The Martell family says Aaron originally contacted the show’s producers in hopes of becoming the next “Bachelor,” but was asked instead to take part in “The Bachelorette.”

“All we know is that he’s on and we don’t know how many weeks or months or days,” said Fred. “So it’s just wait and see.”

Maynard, 25, was selected for the show after she appeared on a season of “The Bachelor.” The young mother had accepted a proposal from bachelor Brad Womack, but the pair ended their relationship following the show’s taping.

Maynard was previously engaged to famed NASCAR driver and team owner Ricky Hendrick who died in a plane crash in October, 2004, leaving his fiancee pregnant with their child.
