Agreed. It seems like there are a lot more gimmicks this year.

I think there have been a lot more gimmicks these last couple of seasons. Some seem very unnecessary. I think some props people bring are entertaining and sweet though. JMO

I am a no gimmick gal myself. You should be able to stand out on your own with your personality. Like JP said "I have no props, I have nothing, but just myself and my smile"

Madison man vies for heart of 'Bachelorette'


Ask Travis Pope’s coworkers at The Clarion-Ledger if they think he’s going to get the girl on this season’s The Bachelorette.

Most will say .... he’s got what it takes.

“I’ve got more than a theory. You know why?” opines his boss, Advertising Director Roland Weeks.

“I’ve been online. I’ve read the blogs. If I had to guess, I’d say he’s top 5,” Weeks said of Pope, who is among a pack of 25 suitors vying for bachelorette and North Carolina resident Emily Maynard’s love.

“He’s a Southern charmer. He’s really camera friendly.”

Pope, a 30-year-old Madison resident employed almost three years as an ad rep at the newspaper, will have the attention of thousands of metro-area residents tonight when The Bachelorette premiers at 8:30 p.m. on ABC.

The Mississippi State University grad is strictly prohibited by the show’s producers and publicists from talking about his time on the show, receiving additional instruction today via email about keeping the show’s secrets a secret.

His fellow ad reps, however, have no restrictions on talking about Pope.

“He’s extremely charismatic,” said Beverly Bennett, who has worked with Pope since he started at the newspaper.

Said ad rep Glenda Gilmer: “He’s like a little brother. It’s like you want to keep him out of trouble.”

But is he a player?

“From the stories I’ve heard, I’d say so,” observes ad rep Marcus Burger. “I’ve talked to his friends from MSU. He’s not shy.”

Tonight, his coworkers say, they’ll either watch the show live or TiVo it.

“I bet over in Madison, they’ll be parties everywhere,” Gilmer said.
