Still in hiding as a couple during the weeks leading up to the Bachelorette finale, Tayshia Adams and her fiancé, Zac Clark, managed to make the most of every romantic moment they could find. “Zac downloaded Pinterest to figure out date ideas,” says Tayshia, 30. “He did a 10-step scavenger hunt, and I found little gifts all around the house. It was better than a Bachelor date!” Now as the happy couple make plans for their future, they reflect on the surprising journey that brought them to each other. “If you had told me back in March that I’d get engaged this year, I wouldn’t have believed you,” says Tayshia, an Orange County, Calif.-based former phlebotomist who took over as the Bachelorette after Clare Crawley’s abrupt departure (see sidebar). “But it 100 percent happened the way it was supposed to happen.” Despite the challenges of filming amid a pandemic, “it was an amazing experience,” says Zac, 36, an addiction-recovery specialist based in New York. “Tayshia turned a light on for me. I’m a very lucky guy.” Ultimately, “2020 has been a really hard year for everybody, including myself,” says Tayshia. “But I’m so happy that I ended it with so much love.”

Congratulations on the engagement! What were your first impressions of each other?

TAYSHIA No. 1, he was wearing sneakers, not dress shoes! He wasn’t trying to put up a front, and I gravitated toward that. And there was a mystery to him that I wanted to know more about. It wasn’t like the first night I said, “That’s my guy.” He kind of came out of nowhere.
ZAC I had zero clue who Tayshia was [before the show], but when she walked in the room, oh my God, the physical attraction was immediate. And during our first conversation, I knew she was special.

Tayshia, you broke typical Bachelor protocol when you told Zac you loved him. Did you hesitate?

TAYSHIA That was just me being me. I understand it’s a show, but I had to be vulnerable and honest. My heart was there with Zac, and I just blurted it out. It’s a different setting, but I wanted our relationship to be as normal and organic as possible.

This season featured powerful conversations about topics including Black Lives Matter, suicide and Zac’s past struggles with drug addiction (he is nine years sober). Why were they important to address?

TAYSHIA There’s a sense of vulnerability in 2020, and if we can’t talk about our feelings and what’s going on in the world, what will we talk about in 20 years? I wanted a real relationship, and those are real-life things. Suicide is real. BLM is real. And addiction is real.
ZAC For me, the addiction thing is who I am. It’s my life’s work, and I’m very passionate about it. When I was going to share [my story] with Tayshia, a lot of the questions [from producers] were, what if she doesn’t accept you? What if she’s not okay with it? But my approach was, if she’s not, that’s fine, and I’m going to move on. Thank God she was okay with it, but I wasn’t nervous about it. I hate the stigma associated with addiction. I don’t wake up every morning feeling sorry for myself. It’s the exact opposite. My life is the best. And if I’ve been given a bigger platform as a result of this, all I want to do is help a couple more people, and I’m good.

You’ve both been married before. Did you consider not getting engaged and just dating instead?

TAYSHIA I didn’t have any expectations, and I wouldn’t put myself in a position to accept a ring if my heart wasn’t ready for it. But I knew I had to snag this one right away!
ZAC I knew I loved Tayshia, and it was pretty fast and furious. But I tried to communicate to her that despite the fact that it was very quick, I’m not someone who just does something to do it. I am committed to this, not just for today, but forever. Thank God she said yes!

What has it been like since the show?

ZAC The reasons I fell in love with her on the show have remained true when the cameras aren’t around. She’s honest, and she’s not afraid to speak her mind. And sometimes she doesn’t believe how amazing she is, so I try to bring that to the surface.
TAYSHIA This guy is so weird, and I love it! He’ll wake up and start cha-cha’ing and say, “I love today!” He’s a clean freak, and he packs and unpacks for me and puts all his clothes away, which I don’t do. And he’s a total mush!

What’s next for you two?
ZAC She has a one-way ticket to New York, and I’m going to date the heck out of her.
TAYSHIA We’re not rushing [into marriage], but it’s an amazing sense of security knowing that he’s not going anywhere and I’m not going anywhere. We have a good, healthy relationship, and it just feels right. Zac is my person. He’s what I’ve always wanted—and I can’t wait to experience life with him by my side.
