IMO it's a good match for Melbourne but I doubt they were there long - just catching a connecting flight IMO.  If they're off to Alice Springs they would have transferred to a smaller domestic plane.  

@Dirty Street Pie Did you find any flights from Tullamarine to Alice Springs that would fit the timeframe?

ETA:  Weather for Alice Springs tomorrow.  If that's where they're having the FRC then I wish them luck.

I just found a Jetstar flight direct from Melbourne to Ayers Rock airport at 9AM . If that’s where they’re going, this makes a whole lot more sense. Get off the flight, grab a burger and move on. Flight got to Ayers Rock at at 10:30 AM

That would be the most direct option @barbell so is probably the most likely. There's also a flight to Alice Springs that was due in around 11 this morning, so it's safe to say that the family is all there, and have had their phones removed from them

Not unless they want to lose a whole day - it's a 20 hour drive.  If they were headed to Byron they'd have flown direct to Brisbane airport IMO.  They're better off away from Byron at the moment - bushfires all across that part of the country the past few days.

ETA: I feel like I'm not really selling our country to US audiences here. AU really is beautiful, despite all the things that can kill you.

Thanks for the info @Bobette. I am actually from Canada. Live in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia in the western part of the country. We deal with forest fires all summer here so do know the dangers of that...then add some snakes, cougars and bears to the mix. Not a good combo. But do know that Aussie is really nice too as my Uncle and Aunt went there years ago for a month and actually travelled around the country all up and down the east coast and to Ayers/Ularu. They brought home hundreds of pics and home video and loved their time there. To be honest, it's on my bucket list so to speak and can't wait to go myself. But as you can see, definately need a geography lesson or two before I go. LOL.

We LOVED Australia when we visited in April!! Will definitely go back.

IMO they might just being going through customs and then catching a flight somewhere else.
