Opinion: Nick Cummins is still very, very single

BACHELOR fans, it’s time to take a deep breath and realise we’ve had a pretty good run.

A baby! A wedding! Too many magazine photoshoots to count! But the golden era of our favourite show is over.

Producers of Network 10’s flagship series started off with noble intentions to match Tim Robards’ biceps with Anna Heinrich’s unusually attractive face. And in the years since they have done a fine job of delivering the Australian public the one thing they want more than a stable government — everlasting Bachelor love.

Only, somewhere, somehow, the ultimate goal changed. No matter how desperately we want to believe Osher’s promise that this is still a show where people find their soulmates, The Bachelor franchise has become more about star power than matching two of the country’s most eligible singletons together.

We might only be a week in, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins’ season will end with an awkward announcement that his relationship didn’t even last the distance of Sophie Monk and Stu Laundy’s.
 
Let’s look at the evidence, shall we?

Despite being illuminated on our television screens every Wednesday and Thursday night, not even Cummins himself wants to draw attention to his search for love.

The 30-year-old former rugby union star’s Instagram account — the one he posts to regularly, and boasts 345,000 followers — does not mention his role on the show. Not a single hashtag, comment, or photograph points to his rumoured $250,000 dalliance with Network 10. Not even a customary rose emoji appears in his bio, which is frankly sacrilegious.

Then there were the interviews — the many colourful (read: regrettable) chats Cummins gave to what felt like every publication in Australia ahead of the season premiere last week.

When probed by Men’s Health as to whether his dream woman was among the contestants, Cummins stammered: “It wouldn’t be one of the ones on the show that’s for sure! Did you mean on the show? I mean … it … It wouldn’t be anyone that I’ve already met …”

Oh, right then. How utterly convincing.

While every other Bachelor and Bachelorette before him has gushed endlessly about their new significant other — even Sophie Monk announced “I know I’m in love” before her season’s premiere to Popsugar last year — Cummins would rather talk about anything else.

In conversation with KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O, Cummins preferred not to answer questions about romance, but to instead describe his erection at length. (For those who missed it, it was “something a cattle dog couldn’t chew through.”)

As charming as that mental imagery is, Cummins’ quotes about the female contestants’ “nice little bloody nighties” and how much he relished “exchanging saliva” with them in spas don’t precisely scream ‘I found love and am thoroughly enjoying living a monogamous life!’

Rather, they’re a stark reminder that famous single Aussies like Nick Cummins and Sophie Monk do not simply go on The Bachelor because Tinder’s selection is dwindling and their left ring finger feels a bit naked. In part, they go on the show because even for the already-famous, it offers an irresistible career platform.

While Monk’s star was already bright when she accepted the gig in 2017, it is undeniable that she profited from her failed search for a life partner. Her social media following almost tripled between the time of her announcement as the new bachelorette and the season finale.

Since the show, she has worked not only as the host of Love Island, but with the likes of Uber Eats and Chemist Warehouse. She’s also graced the cover of WHO Magazine and been crowned Cosmopolitan’s personality of the year.

Of course Cummins — who retired from professional sport in 2016 and rejected The Bachelor producers when they first approached him — saw Monk’s unbridled success and licked his lips. Who wouldn’t?

We’re kidding ourselves if we think ‘finding love’ was the Tradie underwear ambassador’s first priority when he signed on the dotted line. This is show business, after all.

Even if his intentions were plucked from a fairytale, the fact remains: a man still salivating over missed opportunities in the spa bath “with some cracking sort” is not a man who is deeply in love.

So in seven weeks’ time, the chances are Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins will walk into his post-finale interviews a single man.

A single man with bountiful career opportunities to spoon in bed.
