no they couldn't have. Same as with the photoshoot and having Taite the only one getting a single and love shot with Ali. Mills & Boon only doing what TPTB want (like Sportsbet too   )

'It's hard to cheer on a cheater': The Bachelorette's second episode delivers the series' lowest ratings EVER as viewers turn on Ali Oetjen and the future of the show looks uncertain

The new season of The Bachelorette, starring Ali Oetjen, limped onto TV screens on Wednesday with extremely poor ratings.

And those audience numbers failed to improve on Thursday, with the second episode recording the lowest ratings ever in the history of the series.

The Network Ten show drew just 539,000 viewers on Thursday night in the five major cities, putting it well below programs such as the ABC Evening News (692,000) and Gogglebox (677,000).

So why are the ratings so bad this season?

David Knox, the editor of TV Tonight, told Daily Mail Australia on Friday that it may come down to star Ali Oetjen.

'You have to wonder if Ten painted themselves into a corner with the casting coup of Sophie Monk [star of The Bachelorette in 2017],' he said.

'She was so self-deprecating and good-humoured that viewers embraced her, warts and all. They pulled it off again with the Honey Badger [Nick Cummins, star of The Bachelor 2018], notably drawing in more male viewers.

'It was not surprising that viewers were underwhelmed with the announcement of Ali Oetjen who we have watched twice before [on The Bachelor in 2013 and Bachelor in Paradise in 2018].'

David added that the new season of The Bachelorette has aired too soon after The Bachelor - and Bachelor in Paradise before that - leading to viewer fatigue.

Meanwhile, fans have expressed anger at The Bachelorette's leading lady on social media and in website comment sections, blaming her scandalous past for the show's poor ratings.

Earlier this year, the 32-year-old account manager was publicly accused of cheating on her ex-boyfriend Grant Kemp. She has never denied his claims and it is understood the allegations will be addressed on The Bachelorette later this season.

One fan wrote online: 'It might be a bit hard for everyone to cheer on a cheater. Does she deserve to find love? It's a shame though because The Bachelorette tends to be more entertaining than The Bachelor. She's great / likeable on [the show], nonetheless. I'm keen to the contestants to ask her about Grant.'

Another commented: 'These low ratings are mainly due to Ali. Ten received nothing but negative comments after it was revealed that she is the new Bachelorette.'

It follows reports that, in the wake of CBS' takeover of Network Ten, The Bachelorette or The Bachelor (or both) could be axed as they are 'too similar' to one another to survive.

It was also claimed that CBS executives were closely 'observing' Ten programs and would be deciding carefully which shows are renewed in 2019.

However, a Network Ten spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia in August: 'The claim that we think the shows are too similar and that there is only room for one is naïve and false.'
