Yes, he did something wrong: he left the scene of an accident. However, it seems as if his actions did not cause the death or there would have been other charges. Having worked insurance claims for many years I will tell you that people do things that don't make any sense following an accident: things that they regret later and things they shouldn't have done. People feel no injury but later find they were walking around on a broken leg.
Sooooo...it is hard to say why he reacted the way he did. Someone died: someone he knew, he was likely upset, maybe even in shock, at the time and reacted in a way he may regret. ( I can't read minds) He will now pay the price for that.

I really doubt he will see jail time. He left the scene before law enforcement arrived but he called 911 and stayed until medical personnel arrived. He even tried to help but, he couldn’t because he didn’t know CPR.

The sentencing delays help place it further back in local memory and the exclusion of the victim impact statements is a major coup. His lawyers are the best. Today was the best defense I’ve seen in years. In the end, the prosecutor supported the defense arguments. Everyone agreed to the further delay in sentencing.

Money talks.

That settlement is a result of the civil lawsuit against him from the family.

He still has to be sentenced for the accident.

Because of their property holdings and its value, I suspect they have liability insurance to cover lawsuits, etc. Here in Calif, where homes are so expensive, a lot of people carry an umbrella liability policy to protect their homes from having to be sold should a landowner be fined from a lawsuit.

He needs to stay out of trouble over the next 2 years. I'd guess he's taking this very seriously, or should be.

I do not have any legal experience when it comes to suspended sentences but what's the point? TYIA

@GuardianAngel, it means that if they get into any trouble or don't comply with what they were ordered to do, they'll have to serve their sentence. It's a 2nd chance but he still has to do his probation. Sometimes they have them do community service so hopefully they will with Chris.
