@notarose Another good post. Glad to hear Demi is in therapy. It seems that Dean and Caelynn heal each other as they both have such a naturalness about them now that is real beauty (even though I HATE Dean's hair). Blake - still searching for his terra firma, IMO.

Is it pure chance that these folks ended up being cast? IMO, no. TPTB are always looking for a good story and these really delivered. I think of all the hometown visits I've seen since the very first show, Dean's was the most impactful on me.

Late last year Demi tweeted she had begun therapy.
IMO Demi is another example of how the show casts “stories“. Demi - off & on jailbird mom and the social ostracism of her child experience because of it; Dean - watching his bff die plus very odd family dynamic and mother’s death; Caelynn - drugged and r*ped; Blake - child of divorce in a small community plus school shooting situation. All of these are traumatic situations outside the norm but part of each individual’s life experience. Each did “choose to be on the show” but I think tptb salivates when someone like this signs up and sees them more as a case study than a person. IMO tptb likes to cast wounded peeps because they bank on them having unresolved issues which potentially make for drama in the ways they might react within the social experiment of the show.
I’m not a fan of Demi however I’m empathetic toward her $hitty childhood experiences. From what she said on AF there is a lot that needs resolving and as you said it will take work to overcome.

I'm empathetic to Demi and others you've listed as well. My point was that I wish these contestants had enough awareness to not go on a TV show at all but into therapy and get the help they need. I agree that producers cast them for a reason and it is to exploit their personalities and behavior for good tv. It must be extremely hurtful for them when they do open up and share personal info only to have media and "fans" twist it or make fun of it. They also end up hurting many other cast members in the process, and not just the typical hurt of not receiving a rose, but teasing and bullying and behaviors that producers manipulate. I work in youth and mental health and it truly hurts me when I see new characters come on these shows with the promise and lure of bright lights knowing that their broken story is going to be exposed and used against them and that the process of awareness and getting help will be very public for such personal issues. Luckily most contestants are the typical variety of fame and experience seekers and are more resilient and have healthy ways to deal with the ups and downs of public life.
