Re: Bachelor 21 - Nick Viall & Vanessa Grimaldi - FAN Forum - Discussion #21
ET's Lauren Zima spoke to Viall and Grimaldi on Tuesday in Los Angeles, when they addressed their much scrutinized first appearance as a couple. Viall says he wouldn't change anything about their After the Final Rose special.
"Should we have? Quite honestly, all we did was answer [host] Chris' questions and Chris wanted to ask us a lot of questions about how it's been, so we just decided to be honest," Viall, 36, tells ET.
"We're not going to show up and be like -- you know, if we get asked questions like, 'Have there been difficult times?' Yeah, of course," he adds. "Our relationship so far has been me dating 29 other woman and having to watch that back while having a relationship long-distance. I don't know if you think that might be easy. It's not. We just decided to be upfront about it. We're just a very practical couple."
Viall says he and Grimaldi are "realistic" about their relationship.
"There's no guarantee," he explains. "Unfortunately, in this day and age, relationships in life are hard. Unfortunately, even after people get married, with how things are, it's not uncommon to get divorced. We're just realistic about it, and I think that's what we have going for us."
"I think sometimes when you pretend things, you play house, that can set you up for disaster," he continues. "I have the confidence we're going to face things head on, and we're OK to admit that there's a fear of things not working out, but we're going to give it our best to make sure that it does."
Grimaldi says her greatest fear about their relationship is it coming to an end.
"I wasn't going to say yes to a proposal if I wasn't sure I could picture a life with Nick," Grimaldi says. "I do picture that life. We're happy, we love each other -- of course there's things we still need to figure out. There's things we need to figure out about ourselves too after the show, but I think my fear would be it not working out in the end."

The problem was CH asked the same question rephrased ten different ways. That interview was lacking in balance, and was such a downer after such a beautiful proposal. IMO.

Billysmom wrote:I feel so cheated that we didn't get to hear him gush about the sort of stuff that was likely left on the editing room floor...even things like the yellow bracelet. I think as viewers the lack of reminiscing about the happy times made the "realism" that much more of a red flag. If their convo had been more balanced I for one would have been a lot less deflated at the end.
The main theme in their interviews is "future together" so IMO I think they are content to leave the past/show process behind them and build new happiness memories from the present onward. IMO. Nick has said he is closing that chapter and starting a new one.
Would love to see glimpses of their life as a couple: their new place, dance practice, hanging with friends, V's new project advocating on behalf of LD. Shows over for me

Everybody.
I CANNOT EVEN , I have no words. Just processing and absorbing what I watched & Nick & Vanessa's beautiful proposal. ATFR underwhelming thanks to TPTB but Kimmel- their happiness shone & relaxed energy shone.

Interesting question about changing their AFTR appearance after the reaction to it. Basically, would you guys fake it, put on an act in order to get a better fan reaction? And they're like nah, we're good. JMO.
Sharleen mentions this in her recap. She knows Nick and she knows he prioritizes integrity and honesty over telling people (Bach nation) what they want to hear.

Yep. And in the end faking it won't benefit Nick and Vanessa. Fans are fleeting, their adoration will vanish. If they started faking it, they'd be just lying to themselves. Jmo.

Re: Bachelor 21 - Nick Viall & Vanessa Grimaldi - FAN Forum - Discussion #21
Lastly, I’ve heard mixed reviews about Vanessa and Nick’s AFR showing, but—and you know by now I don’t hold back on my opinions—I truly thought they aced it. Viewers and Bachelor alums alike seemed to find it “awkward” that the two weren’t beaming the entire time. What I saw was two very pragmatic people talking about a wonderful relationship that had its challenges but that was entirely worth the work. I was reminded of what Nick said to Vanessa earlier in the episode, before the proposal: “I could come here and tell you everything you wants to hear. I know what you want to hear.” Believe me, Vanessa and Nick could have gone up there, smiled until their cheeks hurt, and talked about how easy everything is because they’re so in love. They know what we want to see and hear. And frankly, if they weren’t happy but were faking it, that’s what they SHOULD have done. (How many couples have we seen now, smiling and raving about how great everything is, who were broken up soon after?) Instead, Vanessa and Nick made it very clear how in love they are, but that everything from logistics to being “insulated” have been difficult hurdles. Realism shouldn’t be mistaken for unhappiness, especially while the folks in question talk about being realists.

I can finally say "good-bye" TB! I can say thank you for introducing me to Nick and Vanessa ... but it's my pleasure to leave that chapter behind closed doors and throw away the key. I much rather dance "on my own" than in "bad company" (*cough* TPTB/CH) ... and it's even more enjoyable ... in groups like yours. "Girls" who just want to have fun (with intelligence).
BTW, the ATFR segment was a piece of cake (the one that you regret eating after) ... but it was nothing unexpected or different from who Nick and Vanessa have always been and shown themselves to be ... "ask me a direct question and I'll give you a direct answer" - that's what it was - IMMO.
Comfort Zone is just a prison of our own making. / I hope you dance.

Questions and Answers portions of Nick's Interview from Hello Canada:
"Congratulations, Nick! What excites you most about no longer having to keep your engagement a secret? I think we’re just more excited about going grocery shopping than anything else! Just waking up and grabbing coffee, because we’re not worried about being seen. I think those are the little things in life that you learn to appreciate.
Are there any wedding plans in the works? Not right now. There’s no denying that our relationship – like other people’s in the world of The Bachelor – is not your typical kind of engagement. We’re very happy to be where we are but we’re also both realistic. While we made this commitment to each other, we also realize that we haven’t been able to have a normal relationship. I think we’re very much looking forward to that. It’s important for us to take it one day at a time, not to be cliché, but just to focus on our relationship. We don’t feel the need to start planning anything.
With Vanessa and Kaitlyn, you’ve dated two Canadian women during your stints on The Bachelor. What makes Canadian women so intriguing? Canadian people seem like they’re willing to have fun. They always seem to be attractive, fun, cultured and interesting.
There were some steamy scenes this season – especially between you and Corinne! Was there anything you felt you had to talk through with Vanessa before you watched the show together? I think you have to talk about everything. I don’t end up with Corinne, right? So I think [Vanessa] understood the role I was in. It doesn’t make everything easy to swallow at that time. I don’t think it’s anything your fiancée wants to watch. It can take its toll.
Several of the women on the show told you they loved you. When did you know that you were in love? I talked about feeling like I was starting to fall in love with more than one of the women, but it was important for me to get through it. I pushed down any type of feeling of love because I didn’t want to get myself into a Ben Higgins situation [Ben told both of the final two women on his season that he loved them]. At the same time, having been runner-up twice, I wanted to use all the time I could to make my decision. It wasn’t until I was done with the dates that I really was just like, “How do I feel?” I probably didn’t admit it to myself until the morning of the finale.
What did you learn about yourself throughout the process of being the Bachelor? I had done it three times, and I’m 36. I don’t know if I had this epiphany. I think it’s a very difficult process because whether it’s filming the show or having to deal with social media, it reminds you to not sweat the small stuff. [You have to] focus on the things that really matter.
Do you have any advice for Rachel Lindsay, who’ll be looking for love on The Bachelorette? I saw her at The Women Tell All and we got a chance to talk on-camera. We also had a very brief discussion off-camera. My only advice to her was to be herself. [Remember] that it’s going to be tough, and having feelings of self-doubt is normal. I think she’s going to be great.
We saw Vanessa take you aside at one point in the season and question your intentions on the show. Were you shocked by that? No. As the Bachelor, the most difficult part is every decision you make in almost every situation is going to make one person happy while disappointing the rest. I thought that conversation with Vanessa was a good one. I’m glad she handled herself the way she did. I’m glad she was very upfront and direct but still respectful. I understood where she was coming from. I think those are the moments that I actually appreciated.
Why is that? There’s no relationship that doesn’t have those moments. It’s great to talk about how much you love each other, but it’s also important to talk about things in a relationship like, “I think we’re great, but here is where we may struggle.” I wanted for us to have those authentic conversations and not be afraid to point those out.
Next, you’re joining Dancing With the Stars. How does Vanessa feel about that? I think she’s more excited than I am, which is great. She’s just excited to share the experience with me. I think it’s going to be fun. I’m very appreciative of her and her excitement."
