He has been billed as the Mr Nice Guy who is poised to front the next series of the Bachelor Australia. And rope access technician Richie Strahan lived up to his soubriquet when he was seen escorting an elderly lady to her home in Perth on Tuesday.

The gentlemanly 30-year-old was spotted sharing a chuckle with the diminutive woman and holding her parasol as she clambered out of her car before guiding her up a flight of steps to the front door.

What a difference a year makes. Strahan is now back as star of The Bachelor, with 22 hopefuls vying to catch his eye when the series kicks off on July 27. Though a few friends told him not to bother, he decided to risk it all, anyway. And he sounds happy that he did.

But did he find The One? “Define ‘The One,’” he shoots back. “Let’s just say I felt something on the first night. Richie’s happy.”

The Bachelor 2016: Richie Strahan appears to have found love despite inner struggle

Never mind that filming has just begun. In the febrile environment that is a Bachelor cocktail party, this sparks a debate. Does Richie Strahan – star of Channel Ten's hit dating show – prefer good personality or good hair?

Strahan, a 31-year-old rope access technician from Perth, glides over. He selects a woman, asking her to join him for a drink. Every move is flawless.

Once they're alone, he stumbles, mentioning his date with another contestant. Realising his mistake, he changes course – by rattling off the specifications of his motorbike.

"He's a naturally nervous guy," says Shaun Murphy, head of entertainment for Warner Bros International Television in Australia. "But it's endearing.

"Some guys [get so nervous] they just fluff it, whereas he gets in his groove ... he grows, and we love seeing that."

Viewers met Strahan last year, as a competitor on The Bachelorette. When he was sent home by Sam Frost (the jilted winner of a previous season of The Bachelor, if you can keep up), producers pegged him as a leading man.

But not because he's a carbon copy of his predecessors. Tim Robards, Blake Garvey and Sam Wood were relentlessly slick; Strahan has a charmingly goofy side. It doesn't hurt that he looks like he's stepped off the set of The Bold and the Beautiful, either.

"What sets Richie apart is that he's funny – like, rolling in the aisles funny," says host Osher Gunsberg.

"He had the girls in stitches the whole time. Plus, he's very adventurous. He's up for anything. He hangs off the side of oil rigs in the Indian ocean for a living."

That's not as scary as what's unfolding tonight. On a warm evening in March, Fairfax Media tours the new Bachelor mansion, a Kardashian-esque compound in Sydney's bible belt. Near the pool, one woman is channelling her psychic nan. Another is goaded into reading a terrible poem aloud.

"If he comes to me, he comes to me," declares a contestant.

"But he doesn't even know who you are," counters her nemesis. It's perfect fodder for a promo.

Strahan has endured his fair share of awkward cocktail parties on The Bachelorette. He also knows what it's like to wait for a rose in those dramatic eviction ceremonies. He finds it more wrenching, though, to be the bachelor: the one who sends women packing.

"Richie is the guy who would never want anyone in the room to not be smiling," Gunsberg says.

"When he is the one who is responsible for making someone in the room unhappy, it's very tough for him."

Having filmed months in advance, the series is now in the can. Strahan all but guarantees he found love: "I can confirm I'm extremely happy," he says.

Between The Bachelorette and The Bachelor, he worked on an offshore drilling ship called Deepwater Millenium. It was a good grounding for the brutal realm of social media.

"Working in oil and gas, you cop a lot of grief from your mates, but in a fun way," he says. "So a few bad articles [or comments]? Water off a duck's back. You have a cup of concrete and move on."

Where matters of the heart are concerned, however, he's the same soft-hearted Richie we saw last year. Perhaps no surprise, given his role models are his single mother and his sister.

"I've been raised by two beautiful women. They taught me you should always respect women. Going into this, [I know that] these girls are putting their hearts on the line."

1. The police got involved!
Fans know that paparazzi were a very real problem for production this year, and art director Richard Jensen reveals that the police were called. ‘[The paps] used drones, and to film with them on private property you need a CASA permit [a special flight permit], which they didn’t have.’

2. How long do the cocktail parties and rose ceremonies go for?
Some beauties reveal that their first night filming was ‘very, very long’, but Warner Bros’ head of entertainment says they try to wrap the cocktail party after 3.5 hours max, while the rose ceremony usually lasts about 1.5 hours.

3. Expensive drinking habits
While our new Bach Richie Strahan, 31, tells OK! his drink of choice is ‘water’, the girls who opt for an alcoholic beverage at the cocktail party have access to champagne, sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignon. The lucky ladies get to drink these out of ruby-stained goblets valued at a whopping $450 each.

4. It was always Richie!
A few names from last year’s Bachelorette series (hey, Michael Turnbull) were thrown around as potential leading man candidates for the fourth season, but the show’s head of entertainment says ‘no other guys’ for the show were ever in contention.

5. What the girls can pack
While mobile phones are left at home, contender Kiera Maguire, 29, says the ladies are encouraged to bring lots of outfits. ‘We can bring two 20kg bags, so two big suitcases full of clothes,’ she says.

6. They can order pizza
While contact with the outside world is limited, the girls can take a night off cooking for themselves and order pizza… they just can’t answer the door!

7. Styling went cray cray with the flowers
More flowers were sourced to dress the outer-Sydney abode than ever before, with the 14-strong art department purchasing all of the fake bougainvillea available in Australia. A week was spent setting up the gardens, and another three weeks on dressing the ‘morroshcan’ (a mix of Tuscan and Moroccan) themed abode.

8. The new ‘international’ house
Production feels that the new house is closer, in both looks and feel, to the ‘international’ versions of the franchise. The space that the crew now have to play with includes two dams, a helicopter pad, a tennis court and  a vineyard, and there are two turrets from where some of the many cameramen are able to film.

9. First impressions
The poor girls that don’t make it past the first rose ceremony don’t even get to unpack their bags. Once the roses have been handed out on the first night, the ladies head inside to sort out which of the mansion’s four bedrooms they’ll be sharing for the coming weeks. A ‘surprise’ feature takes pride of place in the middle of the frontyard fountain to welcome the ladies as they arrive.

10. Osher’s hair is still on point
Host Osher Gunsberg’s mop is so renowned, it has its own following, and fans will be pleased to know it’s back in fine form this season. ‘I leave my hair up to Carla Mico, my hair and make-up machine, but I think people aren’t going to be disappointed,’ says the 42-year-old. ‘Give the people what they want!’
