Favourite Oldies - Movies - Shows - Music - Traditions Empty Favourite Oldies - Movies - Shows - Music - Traditions

I had mentioned in another thread after reading about yet another new Reality TV show Love at First Kiss, that I jokingly (but true) said I miss June Cleaver and Bewitched.

I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread for just that. Favourite, movies, shows, songs, bands or traditions long lost or handed down. Maybe the younger posters will learn something new, and perhaps they have watched movies or listen to music that others have never heard of.

I remember watching the Love Boat every Saturday night. That was during a time when I was newly wed and my husband, ex now, was gone every Saturday night playing in a band. I'd clean house all day, watch sports all afternoon, and plunk myself in front of the TV to watch The Love Boat and whatever else was on at that time. I have to think.

30 some odd years ago, several of my co workers started to come over on Saturday night to play cards. Since hubby was gone till 2-3am, we were able to be goofy and make as much noise as we wanted. Today, those same girls and I still get together 3-4 times a year, we never stopped.

Cool thread! I love that anecdote about playing cards with your friends when your husband was out and still having them in your life 30 years later. I really hope my friendships last that long!

I guess I'm one of the younger posters, but some of my favorite movies are old b+w ones like His Girl Friday, Roman Holiday, and Notorious so I'm excited to see what other people have enjoyed in the past. I'm always looking for recommendations, as I just can't get into 95% of the movies that come out nowadays.

I've always liked mysteries/dramas and loved some of the old shows like Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis Murder, The Rockford Files, Matlock, Magnum P.I. beatingheart , and Hart to Hart.

Remington Steele, Pierce Brosnon was so dreamy. And I loved both Love Boat and Fantasy Island. Daytime reruns when I could get my siblings to let the youngest chose was The Brady Bunch, but then my mom had four kids, my dad had three, then they married and had me, so that was a no brainier Hugesmile

Movie wise, I loved Henry Fonda, Audrey Heburn, and Jimmy Stewart. We used to watch the old black and white movies on summer vacation when the sun in the Keys got to intense or when I managed to get an ear infection.

These old shows bring us comfort from a more innocent time.
When I was younger my best friend lived right behind us and in the 70's divorce was not real common and her parents were divorced. We spent god knows how many Friday afternoons after school watching I Love Lucy and then Leave it to Beaver(repeats as I am not that old!) and then having matzah ball soup and fried chicken for dinner. Her mom was a great cook and I had to escape my own family of 8. It was a win-win for 2 young girls.

No good deed goes unpunished.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, bye Felicia!

I actually met the Beav, got my pic with him and his autograph when he was in Hairspray. I loved the show growing up (re runs) and I was all fan girling over the grown up Jerry Mathers, and my kids were like "WTH? Who is he? What's a Beav? I grew up watching Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, Dukes of Hazard, Love Boat and Fantasy Island. I remember Sonny & Cher, I Dream of Genie, Bewitched and The Brady Bunch. Me, my brother and sister ate our lunch in front of reruns of The Beverly Hillbillies and The Flintstones as latch-key kids. I am old enough to remember that you couldn't find anything to watch on television on a Sunday until after dinner because the programming was all religious.

A new show I stumbled on and enjoyed called Younger by Sex & the City creator Darren Star about a 40 year old woman/mom of 18 year old daughter who had to leave suburbia due to gambling addict, cheating husband (now ex) and needs a job so moves in with her artist friend in Brooklyn and is trying to re-enter the world of publishing that she left 18 years ago to raise her daughter. However, she is discriminated due to her age so with the encouragement of her friend, lied and said she is 26. She gets assistant job and with that, the season takes her through new 20some friends and a 20some boyfriend and all that this entails. It was good—a 7 or 8 out of 10 good—and like Sex & the City, appeals to a wide age bracket and the characters are likeable. I haven't heard much about it, but it will be back for a second season so it must've done at least somewhat ok in the ratings.

I just started watching Younger too! I liked it - although I just can't buy Sutton Foster as a 26 y/o! Maybe it's because I was too young for it, but I could never really get into Sex and the City. The women just all seemed so bratty and spoiled to me. I did love Aidan though.

Oh yes I agree she doesn't look 26 to me either but she does a good job of her character.

Yes Sex and the City was very opulent but I loved all of that. Yes loved Aiden and Big.

She is a great actress! She was on Bunheads, which was written by the writer of Gilmore Girls, one of my all time favorite shows, and she was fantastic in that also.

I haven't seen it or heard of it. I may check it out. A lot of people like Gilmore Girls but I tried to watch and both mother and daughter talked too fast and I ga e up after one episode.

I just thought of more favorites from my teen years though or maybe they were re-runs and I on,y appreciated them then but anyway they are: Barney Miller, WKRP in Cincinatti and Mad Movies (I think that's what it was called). They'd play old black & white movies and make up a funny dialogue dubbed over them. Anyway think this was in early to mid 80s.
