Second Bachelorette reveals marriage - despite earlier denial

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=11436723

A contestant on popular reality show The Bachelor has revealed she was married - just two weeks after denying it to a reporter.

Invercargill teacher Alysha Brown, 26, one of the stars vying for the heart of a man on the TV3 reality show, last night admitted to bachelor Art Green, 26, that she was still legally married to her ex.

It came exactly two weeks after Ms Brown denied the marriage to NZME. News Service, repeatedly saying "no" when asked if she was married to rugby player Kade Poki.

Speaking from her parent's Invercargill home, Ms Brown was adamant she was not, and had never been, married to Mr Poki, saying she had "no idea" why there would be speculation that she was.

She then referred all questions to TV3's parent company MediaWorks, which did not respond to questions about the marriage.

Following the revelation on last night's show, a MediaWorks spokeswoman said the marriage was kept secret so it could be revealed on the programme.

"As you know, we never confirm or deny information that could be a 'spoiler' and hence interfere with a viewer's enjoyment of a programme," she said.

Ms Brown had been "transparent about her marital status" with the producers of the show, the spokeswoman said, and the marriage did not disqualify her from entering the programme.

"Alysha was flustered to be phoned by a journalist and didn't intend to deny her marital status - she made some nervous remarks while trying to pass the journo onto publicity as fast as possible."

Questions over Ms Brown's marriage closely followed revelations about other contestants on the show, including another who was still married.

Auckland lawyer Danielle Beston, 35, was married for four years to barrister Matthew Goodwin. Meanwhile, Danielle Le Gallais was once sentenced to 18 months' jail for stealing almost $40,000 from her employer, among other run-ins with the law.

The MediaWorks spokeswoman said the issue of Ms Brown's marriage was not of the same scale as the scandal involving Danielle Le Gallais.

The string of controversies has prompted one critic to warn that broadcasters or producers who let reality TV show contestants mislead the public risked alienating sponsors and advertisers.

Political scientist Dr Joe Atkinson said today's hyper-competitive TV environment created big pressure on networks and producers to churn out popular reality TV shows.

"Getting bums on seats requires you to do quite extraordinary things to get attention," Dr Atkinson said.

"These shows appear to be cheap to make and to rate very highly. From a commercial point of view, they're very successful. However in several ways they're also highly problematic. If these kinds of 'deceits' are occurring frequently, that may become a problem for sponsors..."

He said finding a diverse range of people, and especially characters likely to clash, was imperative for those producing reality shows.

"Conflict is what sells news and newspapers, as well as television. The reason why you're looking at this programme right now is because it's controversial."

Embarrassing scandals in some ways made The Bachelor more authentic, Dr Atkinson said.

"Perversely, it's actually making the programme more realistic than it might otherwise have been, because in real life, these kinds of accidents and 'deceits' go on all the time," he said.

"Only the most naive viewer would any longer think they are reality TV, that they aren't carefully orchestrated and scripted and so on."

The Bachelor epitomised a paradox in New Zealand TV, where increased competition -- in the form of channel proliferation -- had produced increased sameness, in the form of formulaic reality shows, Dr Atkinson said.

In response to his comments, MediaWorks said: "We are very lucky to have a fantastic family of programme partners for The Bachelor and our other big reality programmes. These shows are always in high demand with sponsors and deliver excellent results for the brands involved."

Efforts to contact Ms Brown today were not immediately successful. However, she told Woman's Day magazine a "huge weight" was lifted when she told Mr Green she was still legally married to her ex-partner.

"The big question for me was 'When do I tell him?'," she said.

"Personally, I don't think the first date is the appropriate time to tell someone, just like talking about how many kids you want or the kind of wedding you want.

"So I decided to tell him on the second date. When I told him, I told him that he had an option, and that I would go if he wasn't comfortable with it," she said.

Green was supportive of the news, instead sending Natalie home after last night's elimination.

On Instagram, Ms Brown wrote: "We all have our up and downs but everyone who comes into your life is a blessing and a lesson, you can only grow from each and every one."

It's not the first time The Bachelor has sparked controversy. As well as the Ms Beston's marriage, and Ms Le Gallais's conviction, it was also revealed that Matilda Rice, a viewer favourite, is an employee of MediaWorks. Soon after the show went to air it emerged that Dani Robinson had a drink-driving conviction.

The Bachelor has even captured Prime Minister John Key's attention. He told MoreFM last week he wanted Matilda Rice to win.

Bachelorette Chrystal talks honesty with us!

http://www.nzgirl.co.nz/entertain/bachelorette-chrystal-talks-honesty-us/

Whatever you thought about The Bachelor NZ‘s Chrystal Chenery, there’s no doubt that if you watched just one episode of the show, she had your attention. From the first episode Chrystal emerged as the show’s alpha female, and whether she was your protagonist or antagonist, she was most definitely the show’s leading lady – possibly even stealing more screen time than Art, the Bachelor himself.

At nzgirl there was not a conversation about the previous night’s show that didn’t include Chrystal. Love or loathe her, she was hugely entertaining and enjoyable (and sometimes jaw-droppingly shocking!) to watch. For that we at nzgirl definitely fall on the love side of the #TeamChrystal camp. But what we loved most about this stunning blonde 30-year-old, super bendy yoga teacher and massage therapist is that she emerged as one of the most quirky, endearing, and straight up characters ever to be seen on New Zealand television – an absolute must on reality TV!

We spoke to Chrystal over the phone this morning and by the end of the call, this funny, charming woman had us smitten. Perhaps a dose of honesty mixed with a lot of laughs is the best formula for life!

We loved that you owned the “Bitcherlorette” title in social media, but we saw a much more dynamic, quirky and adorable Chrystal emerge in the last few shows, who is the real Chrystal?

I think I was being myself all the way through. Unfortunately out of the full scenario you were just seeing tidbits of what the producers wanted to show. As there were fewer girls, the quirky parts of my personality showed more. The bribes to the producers must have paid off. Can I say that?

The girls (who have left the show) talked abut you being straight up, honest and lighthearted, and said that they really appreciated your humour, is this typically your whole approach to life??

Yeah for sure. I think people need to be a lot more honest with each other. Like, I have a close friend and she wants to say something to her sister that could enhance her (sister’s) life. And it’s something she needs to hear, and if you’re not going to hear it from your nearest and dearest who’s going to have the balls to say it? I felt like I was sisters with the girls in the house so I let my opinions fly. I think everyone could benefit by being more honest with each other.

Your personality dominated the show, so are you surprised it didn’t capture Art’s heart?

I am not surprised. My feelings towards Art were slowly diminishing during the show. It’s very unusual dating a man who is multiple dating a lot of girls, just as it would be in the real world. It was impossible for me to feel anything at the end. Any feelings I did have for Art were slowly disappearing and any women in reality would feel the same way.

You said in your last show that Art didn’t really get you. Do you think if you’d had more one on one time without the cameras you’d have been a great match for one another?

Yeah totally. It would definitely be a different situation. It would definitely be a different outcome. He said he didn’t really get me, and at the end of the day, we’re women, you’re never gonna get us. I tend to not to compare myself to other women, or look who’s a match for whom. It’s either there or isn’t, and I am not the safe choice. And if you’re on national television then I am definitely not a safe choice! I am even surprised at what pops out of my mouth when I have wine in my hand and a camera in my face!

What compelled a beautiful, talented self assured girl like you to go on The Bachelor NZ? Surely you can just click your fingers and men come running?

My sister made me go on The Bachelor. She’s wanted me to settle down and keep me in New Zealand. She wants me to marry a kiwi boy, and this was her way of making that happen. I’ve been travelling on and off for 10 or 15 years – to Brazil, Canada, Italy for six months, and spent most of last year in Europe travelling, and Aussie, of course I lived in Aussie like every Kiwi – and I have only been living in NZ sporadically. And it’s a lot to ask guys to move back with me to New Zealand because of logistics. All of the above is a mixture of why my sister put me on that bloody show!!

You talked a bit about The Bachelor NZ being a “competition”. Do you really believe that it was, and if so, does it bother you that you didn’t win?

I’m not really. I am a lot of things but I’m not too competitive. I don’t take anything too seriously. At the end of the day if you’re vying for one man’s heart you going to get a bit mouthy about some of the girls. Some of them would get uppity about the others and their behaviour. But we’re not a sorority, it’s not High School Musical, we’re here to date one guy, so yeah. That’s it really.

Who did you bond with most on the show and why?

Throughout my experience I kind of felt like I was friends with all of the girls but I didn’t bond with just one of girls. I have a lot of love and respect for all of the girls. For me, all my life I have never needed someone in my pocket. I had great conversations with all the girls in the house and bonded with them as individuals, but we were like sisters and equally we pissed each other off at certain stages. It’s not unlike that in general in real life.

Do you have any regrets?

I have one massive regret that pisses me off so much! That bloody blue eye liner! I don’t know what I was thinking. That blue eye liner and a pink dress. What was I thinking? If I had one regret I would go back and wipe that poop off! And the stumbling in bad lighting. Where is someone telling us “You look ridiculous!” That’s when we needed some honestly, we needed someone to come up with a facial wipe and wipe that poop off!

Art is about to meet the girls’ families. From what you’ve heard the girls say about their families, do you expect any drama?

I definitely think it’s going to be everyone being really nice. All the girls are really nice so it’s just going to be really, really nice. There might be some opinions asking Art what kind of guy goes and does a TV show dating 21 women to find a girlfriend. Parents are from a different generation like that. But generally, it’s all just going to be everyone being really, really nice.

Who is next out of the show and why?

Definitely I’d go on who’s going to put their heart on the line, and who’s going to open up and that’s what will keep any of the girls in the game from now on. I was being authentic, and I said that I’m not going to put it on and wear my heart on my sleeve. So whoever is going to open up and be really honest will stay.

Who do you want to win Art’s heart and why?

I am #TeamDani and I want her to win because she is very honest and open. Next to me in the house Dani tells it like it is. If she wants to kiss Art she kisses him. You’ve got to ask, are you there to make friends or are you there to get Art. You couldn’t do both. Then equally, some girls did a good job of keeping details to themselves and being respectful of the other girls in the house. So I am not trying to put a spanner in the works by saying that. Each to their own. But I really like Dani because she’s being upfront and honest.

Who do you think will to win Art’s heart and why?
I’m still going for Dani!

***

Thanks Chrystal for the LOLs, the eyebrow raising moments and for reminding us that life can be a laugh if you choose it …and we are soooooo ready for your own talk show!!!

Art was interviewed this past weekend, this was the location where he planned a surprise birthday celebration for one of his buddies & his dad owns a hotel there as well. Lovely pic of him with his dad, step mum & sisters.

Also another reference to his girl enjoying food when & that a girl impressed by diamonds is not for him. Natalie (one of the bachelorettes) was right, Art has dropped enough clues about his type of girl IMO  giggling

THE SPINOFF

The Fantasy Suite Podcast, Episode Seven – Back in the Straddle

30 April 2015 / By Group Think

Jane Yee, Alex Casey and Duncan Greive gather again to the Fantasy Suite to discuss the hometown visits week of the Bachelor NZ, and farewell the wonderful Poppy, farted her way into our hearts all those weeks ago. We discuss Alysha’s big straddle, Dani’s doorway pash and Matilda’s adorable old dad Ken. It’s an emotional episode, with just one week to go, not helped by the fact we finally forewent Lindauer in protest at their continued refusal to sponsor our show, or even acknowledge its existence.

I don't understand the bold. Is she saying she knew who Art was chasing during the show?
