I'm not understanding what "standard" that would be.

The standard being the way he lives his life and the way he feels he conducted himself on the Bachelor.  He has these strong family and Christian values and he's the only one to marry his F1 (so far), but that doesn't necessarily make him the perfect guy or the best Bachelor ever.  But he seems to think he is since he pretty much said so in his book.  It doesn't help that the media and even CH dubbed him that (before Ben) and he and Cat as Bachelor royalty.  It just went to his (their) head.   I don't think Sean is a bad guy, quite the opposite, I just think that he sings his own praises way too much and that he gets judgmental and preachy, especially when talking about or giving advice to others in Bachelor Nation.

He had the same preachy better than thou chip on his shoulder during MBC IMHO as well. He is a good guy overall I am not saying that but he likes to portray an image that isn't really him.

So, basically, he is (they are) "posers" or "wannabes".  I personally don't care for people skirting the truth.  For instance, he promoted himself as this great footballer.  In reality, his college record shows he played in four games with no stats.  That's  like calling yourself an NFL football player and never making it off the practice squad to play in an actual game.  I won't  even get into almost failing out of college, failed businesses, etc.  I really wanted to like him during Emily ' s season, but something wasn't quite right. I think there are more than a few who echo those sentiments, but it seems there are those who love them, too.

I'm sure Sean is a "good guy" in general, I mean he would get pretty low marks on the Bachelor a-hole scale, but his ego definitely doesn't match reality IMO. His only success in life seems to be being the first Bachelor to marry his F1 (and abstaining from sex for a few years), and that's not very impressive in the grand scheme of things. It's not even a case of the whole Bachelor thing going to his head, because he seemed just as into himself before he even became the lead. That's why I never liked him. I hate that a smart capable woman like Cat seems to look up to him and is fine being the "weaker vessel", but oh well, it's her life.

I'm sure overall Sean and Catherine are good people, and a nice couple. I would personally like and root for them more if they owned who they are (unlemoyed, ambiguous careers at best, former reality stars jumping from show to show, riding the Bachelor wave, trying to figure out what to do with life post Bachelor and floundering a bit), and didn't read too much into their supposed self-importance of being the first Bachelor married couple (debatable; I still say Jason and Molly count), and thus, didn't hold others up to their "incredibly high standard." Like, I just feel like both take being the first couple from the Bachelor to get married waaaaaay too seriously. They think it's more impressive or important than it is. It's a silly show; they got lucky.

Wow!! I didn't know he barely played; I had the impression he was a star. And to think the family moved so Sean could play football for a different high school. Bad move PapaJay! IMO this could be part of the reason Sean has an enormous ego; he's been a "special snowflake" for a long time.

I think Jason and Molly count too. So sorry I didn't watch their season. Another thing that bugs me about Sean is post Bachelor he has more often than not bashed the show. Just don't get it. Is he embarrassed or what?

"special snowflake" LOL!

Yeah, I thought Sean was the second coming of Tebow. His record said otherwise. I'm sure his dad was sad a career in football didn't pan out.

Sean & Catherine never refer to themselves as the only Bachelor couple to marry. That's all the media's doing. He talks about his time on the football field in his book and yes it may not have panned out but he got a friend/brother in law out of it & still enjoyed his time. The book would be best to read to get all the facts IMO.

Not to be argumentative, but I'm curious as to where this notion that he "promoted himself as this great footballer" (from the bolded above) comes from? In his book, this is what he specifically says about his college football career: "My biggest regret in life is that I wasted my college opportunities - academically, athletically, and spiritually." Is there another source in which he claims otherwise that I'm not aware of?

If it's related to his high school football career, Sean would be making an accurate assertion, because he was good enough to earn a full scholarship to a Division 1 program that is very well known for their football team (statistically, somewhere around 1% of high school football players in the U.S. are good enough to earn a scholarship to a Division 1 program). Sean has also been very forthcoming (in his book and elsewhere) about his failings academically and in business, so I guess I'm just perplexed about where the notion that he claims he's something that he's not comes from ... no idea

IMO, most of us in the general thread probably aren't inclined to spend the money to buy his book. Some of what we're saying is what we infer (thus our stating of IMO) from various articles about Sean, and in my case, researching further to verify that he barely played. Some of what we're saying is indeed fact; his family moved for Sean to play football for a different HS.
Unless I'm mistaken, snark and our opinions are still ok in the general thread.
ETA: I've always gotten the impression that Sean not only was ON the football team, but played. That's what I understood from the various articles about Sean when he was the bachelor. He is referred to as an ex KState player which he is; I just thought he was more than a practice squad member.

You can tell how highly he thinks of himself when you read his blogs. He's due to start pumping out relationship advice when the show starts airing, he can just edit and strike out the name Ben for JoJo laugh out loud.

Well sometimes articles don't always speak the truth especially gossip rags.
