Happy birthday Sharleen!

Yesterday was my birthday and it got me reflecting on what has easily been the biggest year of metamorphosis for me thus far in this little life of mine. Like so many of you, a pandemic has meant pivoting, adapting, and exploring sides of myself outside of what I typically do (sing). Singing has been my identity for my entire adult life, and to lose that side of myself (even if only temporarily—hopefully) has been very difficult.

But this photo represents the silver lining: having the time (and the nudge) to pursue the side quests. Our podcast @dearshandy is officially 1 year old now, and let me just say: I am SO EFFING proud of myself. In this past year I have stepped out of my comfort zone far beyond what I thought I was capable of, I have learned countless new skills (hello, Adobe Premiere), I have cried and I have celebrated, and I have watched this side hustle grow and thrive with the help of our listeners, the Shandies, folks who genuinely feel like friends. I spent my birthday recording an episode (our 1 year anniversary episode!) and then didn’t look at a screen for the rest of the day. @machinelevine and I did an escape room (obvi) and then got a nice, quiet dinner. It was blissfully low-key and without noise. I may be one year older but I feel 5 years wiser.

Sending this birthday toast out to my fellow artists, performers, business owners, and just anyone who has struggled at the direct blow these times have taken to their livelihoods and, subsequently, their identities. I relate more than you know. Let’s all look back on this and hopefully feel we made the best of it. Much love to you!

I think Shandy is a combo of Sha(rleen) and Andy. (It’s also a type of beer, .)
