He wasn't making fun of mentally disabled person. It was the people that took it and turned it into that. That word today isn't even really associated with mentally disabled people anymore. When said it refer to people who are acting stupid.

Really? try telling that to the family member of a "mentally disabled person" who has HEARD people use that word in a hurtful way toward their child. Tell that to the Down Syndrome child who was called that on the playground by some other child whose parents didn't teach them kindness. In the context of the "joke" he laughed at and retweeted, therefore endorsed, that word was hurtful.

I am a grandmother of a "mentally disabled person". My grandson is in special ed, he takes the "short bus" to and from school. I don't get so upset hearing those words when I feel I know the intent behind it. If someone is using those words to hurt someone, name-call, bully, degrade, etc. then I take exception. For me, it's no different when someone calls someone an idiot, stupid, psycho, loony tunes, etc. Name calling is just that. Some call it snark, some are offended by it, and others are indifferent. I give the benefit of the doubt until I think that they purposefully tried to hurt with using those words. Some people just don't know any better and I don't feel like my 2 cents is going to change their way of thinking. I can only control what I say and what I try to pass on to my family in that other people's hurtful words are only a reflection on them, not the person being called the name.

I agree. I also have a mentally disabled person in my family. I don't think it was his intention to make fun of mentally disable but like you say. It would be pointless to argue cause they will believe what they want.
