Catherine is secure in what they have. She doesn't have to kiss him 24/7 to feel his love. Even though she enjoys kissing him. They have a personal connection as well as a physical one. If that make sense?

Catherine witnessed a girl at summer camp die when a tree fell on her.

To me they seem like friends to me.
