I think Ryan has already assessed that he and Emily aren't going to end up together, and so is just enjoying himself, finding the ridiculousness of the setups and the producer intervention amusing, and reveling in the chance to bond with some new buddies, like any typical athlete would (I cannot wait to see how excited he gets when he finds out about all the travel they'll be doing!).
An athlete would not think like that. Ry has admitted that he is competitive and he is way too competitive to ever mentally shrug his shoulders this early.

After watching previews again. And where the guys are talking about the baggage statement. Then you see Ryan say something about "you need to retract that statement" not word for word. I don't think it is something directed about what Ryan said. But merely the baggage statement about Em and Ricki. I am thinking that Ryan is being protective of Em at this point. Especially since he knows more about her than most after his date with her at the house, etc..

But even athletes adjust their level of competitiveness depending on whether it is just a practice or friendly pickup game vs. the playoffs. Plus, Emily told him (and he agreed) that he shouldn't treat this just as a competition and I think he'll respect that. I also think after their date, he is far from convinced that Emily is the woman for him ( I suspect she feels the same), and thus, he won't even want to be as cutthroat in his approach, or be just "in it to win it" from this point on, which is certainly the more noble and "godly" attitude anyway. I guess Ryan just doesn't strike me as the type to be so ego driven that he'd compete for a prize he doesn't want, just to be able to say he "won".

We gonna have to disagree. i dunno what kinda athlete u are talking about but if u read a Sports Illustrated interview with most athletes who made it to the top of their sport - look at any Derek Jeter or Michael Jordan article, for example - and they HAVE to win at everything. Even if it's a game of Scrabble with a 5 yr old. Michael Jordan never had "friendly pickup games.'

Fair enough. Guess I don't assume that Ryan is another MJ or DJ, or that he is totally confusing this stupid show with a sporting event (or even a game of scrabble)! Hope he doesn't resort to tackling anybody to get that rose!

We can all wake up and smell the roses. It is obvious that half of these guys only plan to make it far enough to get some business promotion. Hey! Nothing wrong with that. If you have to look silly on TV, you might as well get something out of it.
Ryan probably just wanted to promote his gym. (OK... AND have a chance of becoming Emily's hubbie too.) Since it already got coverage in his intro bio, he won't be getting the hometown date. Chris didn't get an intro in the premiere. Therefore Mister Bobblehead will promote something-something on his hometown. (Since Mister Bobblehead entertains me three times as much as Sean, I do feel jipped that he doesn't make final three.)
Just for comparison, Constantine lacked the intro bio in Ashley's episode #1, but got the restaurant promoted in his hometown. We even got Ashley waiting on tables! Actually, I DID enjoy that informercial. Constantine was MUCH more entertaining in that episode than he was the rest of the season.
See! It is not hard to figure this silly show out!
If they insist on storyboarding this show against the lead's wishes, they should allow one of us do it for them. Had they hired me on Ashley's season, both Ben and Dino would have been canned before hometowns, Ames kept where he was and Willie and "oh boy, oh boy, oh boy" Ryan P. saved to compete with JP (as if he would have anything to worry about) in the top 3. Bentley would make his return to Fiji instead of Hong Kong... appearing in ominous flip-flops through the jungle with bats flying overhead. Yes, I am that evil in my mind, but trust me... you would all thank me for it.

Awww, c'mon, IC, I've been DYING to see a tackle. I also want him to use at least once the word "touchdown!" *arms up*
As for the competitive streak in athletes, that's Ryan's edit. He is going to pursue and chase Emily like this "game" is the Superbowl. He already "wrote" a 7-page letter and "made" his competition stand there while she read it (I still can't get over that ridiculousness-ha ha). All that aside though the show can't edit out the good-natured way that Ryan is with these guys. He's a smiling goomba at the RCs, and he's taken the time to get to know the other fellas. I'd venture to say that he will be one of the guys who knows these guys the best. His exit interview will be one that I'll carefully read since he seems very relationship-oriented.

Have to chime in as a Ryan fan. Agree with the bolded. I loved how he said he would compete in the sense that he wanted to show Emily his best and but still true self. I'm sure he'll be a gentleman throughout and make an effort with her as long as he's there, but don't think he'll be a fake or phoney just to move forward. He seems very confident and true to himself. Even accepting his rose, I felt he gave Emily a polite hug, not really a romantic one.
I hate the thought of the "too perfect" edit of say Jake, or RyanP who were both awkward and fake (in very different ways of course; couldn't tolerate Jake for a second but I liked Ryan P) neither of which Ryan is. I think he is a well-spoken, thoughtful guy who is very likeable and interested in getting to know people and I hope they don't edit that as a negative.

I think Jef's may be "is he interested enough?" or "can he overcome his shyness?" (which I think was proved by ruling around the floor with her! )

JBF, anders is correct. It was called into question that she leaked a secret about this season just the way she said it in response to the question asked. Add to it that Cassie hightailed it to Twitter to offer clarification that it was about Brad, and it makes you curious.
Yeah... Cassie's clarification = damage control
That's OK. I'm dropping the subject for now and will go along with the mass opinion. It reeeeeeally doesn't matter much anyway.
I am curious.....damage control for what?

i think JBF is implying that Cassie took to twitter to confirm Em said she fell in love with Brad in order to 'cover up' a slip that she fell in love in this season.
but I heard it with my own ears - I watched the show, they were talking about Brads season when she made that comment.

That's true, anders, but then it doesn't make sense for Cassie to clarify it. She clarified it probably because fans were confused. Otherwise, why say anything?
I don't think it's a cover up of anything. They really should just let Emily say that she's in love if she is. Enough people are guessing about the ending despite the spoilers. It's a lame marketing campaign if you ask me.
