Jef's Interview - People Magazine
The Bachelorette's Jef Holm: I Wanted Emily Maynard to Pursue Me, Too
By Carrie Bell
Sunday June 24, 2012 06:00 PM EDT
Despite arriving via skateboard, entrepreneur Jef Holm, of St. George, Utah, got off to a slow start with The Bachelorette's Emily Maynard. But when the 27-year-old spoke with reporters Thursday, he explained how that pace was all part of his master plan.
You seemed to proceed with caution from the beginning. When I first got to the house, I realized every guy was going full steam ahead for Emily, surrounding and swarming her. That's not how I am with girls. I was the only guy who played it cool and wanted her [to know she was] going to have to fight for and pursue me, too.
You wanted to kiss her in Bermuda, but held off until London. Why?
I wasn't ready to take it to the next level. If we developed feelings, I want them to [go] both ways.
Do you think it put you behind?
I didn't feel like I had to catch up. All the guys thought I was crazy and blowing it, but didn't realize Emily and I were sharing looks back and forth ... We started off slowly and developed a really good friendship. As time goes on, that friendship turns into more and more of a romance.
What did you like about Emily?
She's the most amazing girl I've ever met. I had no idea how well spoken and smart she is. She's a great mom – patient, loving, good in difficult situations, composed, sassy, sarcastic. She's always herself and doesn't care if cameras are watching her. And she's gorgeous.
What are your feelings on becoming a stepdad?
I want to skateboard and play soccer with [Ricki] and that's something Emily and I connected over. I can't wait to be a dad. At this point on the show, in Prague, I could definitely see myself being a father to Ricki and a husband to Emily.
If it's not you, who would make the best husband to Emily?
There were some amazing guys there. I think the world of Arie. Sean is a faithful, genuine guy. Chris and Doug are great. Now that Ryan is gone, everybody is there for the right reasons.
Give us a tease for next week's episode.
As I got a date in London, my time for another date isn't really up but [we] do get to spend some time together. This is a huge pivotal moment in our relationship. And there's a big, surprise elimination.
If you don't wind up with Emily, would you be the next Bachelor?
I learned a lot about myself and met an amazing person so I'm glad I went, but probably not. I'm kind of done with the whole dating on TV thing.

The Bachelorette's Chris Harrison: Next Week's Decision Is Not As Easy As People Think

On this week's episode of The Bachelorette, Emily got not one, but two "I love you's." But just as the remaining men are falling hard, so is Emily - and it only gets tougher.
"We get to the end of hometowns and she realizes, 'Oh, crap. I can't be falling in love with four people when time is running out,'" host Chris Harrison tells TVGuide.com.
Keep reading for more from Harrison about Emily's split decision, Chris' meltdown and Sean's bold (and very hot) move. (For Harrison's thoughts on Arie's past relationship with a producer click here.)
I don't know that viewers - or myself - have ever been so split over a favorite!
Chris Harrison: [Creator] Mike Fleiss even called me and said, "Is it just me or is the buzz exponentially higher than it usually is?" It's never been such a split decision before and it's definitely driving it pretty hard. And Emily is clearly split, so here lies the dilemma moving forward. As you saw in the tease last night, we get to the end of hometowns and she realizes, "Oh, crap. I can't be falling in love with four people when time is running out." I think she thought she'd come into this, see one guy, and that would be it. And the rest of the season [would] kind of sail through, but it's becoming anything but that.
But she doesn't seem to be falling for Chris, so could the decision be that hard?
Harrison: Next week is not as easy as people think it's going to be. You'll see when we get to deliberation how emotional it is and why.
Speaking of Chris, had he not interrupted the rose ceremony, would John have received the final rose?
Harrison: I think it was always going to Chris. Emily can correct me otherwise, but from our conversations I don't think it mattered. John was beyond confident and I remember sitting with the guys while Chris and Emily left, and John was laughing, cutting jokes and thought Chris was going home.
Could she tell that Chris has become unglued?
Harrison: She doesn't get the full picture. You see Chris melt down, but not really in front of her. She was more upset about Doug and was happy the group date was over and she knew Chris was disappointed. It was awkward as hell, but the fallout really happened post-date in the hotel with the guys. That last group date always sucks because everyone is done with living with each other. They don't want to be with anyone else and they don't want to hang out with other dudes. And these guys get along better than maybe any other group has. They're really tightknit, which makes it tougher.
The Bachelorette's Chris Harrison: Ryan's elimination was a big hurdle for Emily
This season's "I love you's" came earlier than in past seasons.
Harrison: Jef - I'm going to count as a half "I love you" since it was "I love you" through a marionette. But there was something so innocent and sweet and endearing about it. I just see a maturity level with this group, and because of her story and what the guys know she's looking for, it allows for that to happen sooner. Maybe with the other Bachelorettes, yes, they're there for love, but you don't want to push the envelope too soon. I think with Emily, everyone knew you couldn't push the envelope soon enough. As soon as someone says ["I want babies"], most guys would literally leave skid marks as they run out of there, but if you're there at this point, you've embraced the fact that she's already a mom.
Are the guys getting to "sneak in" more alone time than usual?
Harrison: You go season by season and there are no hard and fast rules about it. This season lent itself to that activity. The guys are so head over heels and they're dying to be with this woman and have a moment with her. If it's trivial, we say no, but when Arie snuck in, that was amazing. When Sean captured her on the streets of Prague and ended up throwing her up against the wall - I didn't know and I was at breakfast the next morning and a producer said to me, "That was one of the hottest kisses I think I've ever seen!"

.TELECONFERENCE WITH ELIMINATED BACHELOR DOUG (6/28)
MEDIA ALERT
PLEASE JOIN US THURSDAY FOR A TELECONFERENCE CALL WITH DOUG - ONE OF TWO MEN ELIMINATED THIS WEEK BEFORE THE HOMETOWN DATES, ON ABC'S "THE BACHELORETTE"
WHAT:
Teleconference call with Doug, the sensitive single dad, who avoided elimination last week when Emily decided to give out an extra rose.
WHEN:
Thursday, June 28, 12:30 p.m., ET/11:30 a.m., CT/9:30 a.m., PT
WHO:
Doug, 33, a charity director/realtor from Seattle, WA, was an early frontrunner, receiving the first impression rose the first night after reading a touching letter from his son Austin. However, he became worried that Emily was "not that into him," but wanted to make the move to kiss her on the last group date. However, as much as Emily was attracted to their common experience as single parents, she was left looking for the chemistry, for Doug to show her his romantic side. Although he did grab the opportunity to kiss her, she felt like they were just starting out as a couple and that Doug should have been opening up more by now. Emily, having too much respect for Doug, didn't want to put him through another rose ceremony and didn't want to keep him one more day from his son. Doug was stunned by Emily's rejection. He mistakenly thought she would like someone who was just getting to know her. The teary-eyed bachelor admitted he is still on a difficult mission: a single Dad searching for that one right person to make a new family for his son.

Bachelorette Emily Maynard's Secret Calls to Ex Brad Womack!
Reality is setting in for Emily Maynard of The Bachelorette.
In the new issue of Life & Style, on stands now, an insider reveals exclusively that Emily - who got engaged to her final Bachelor on the Caribbean island of Curaçao in early May, is having doubts about the guy she picked and is turning to her ex, Brad Womack of The Bachelor, for support.
"They call and text each other," the source confirms to Life & Style. "They weren't on good terms after their painful breakup, but Brad says they're talking now, and it's throwing him for a loop. It's weird timing, but if anyone can understand what Emily is going through, it's Brad."
Although Emily endured a tough breakup with Brad, the two have finally come to terms with their split. "She's turning to him during this time," an insider says. "If Emily doesn't really know her new fiancé, like she didn't know Brad, then I can see how she must be confused."
"Any woman in Emily's shoes would second-guess her choice," a second insider adds about Emily, who is a single mom and back home in Charlotte, N.C., now with her daughter, Ricki. "She had such strong feelings for at least four of the guys, so of course she has to wonder: Did I pick the right one?"
Former Bachelorette Jillian Harris, who split with her final Bachelor, Ed Swiderski, less than a year after they got engaged, can sympathize with Emily's situation. Though it appears Emily is spending countless hours with each Bachelor, in the end "you're picking a fiancé after spending maybe a total of 20 hours with him," says Jillian.

Thanks cfck!
cfck2222 wrote:Bizarre week in the tabloids. Your 1st look:
US Weekly has a 2 page spread on what a demanding, tempermental diva Emily is.
Life & Style's cover story is devoted to Emily secretly reaching out to Brad again.
OK's cover teases a feature story on Emily and Brad's reunion (not the main cover story) but it's misdirection.
Star has a one page story alleging Emily's actually going to end up with Chris Harrison.
US Weekly's story seems like a rehash of what's already out there. It claims Emily was absolutely furious with Cassie Lambert over the Arie dating reveal. It also claims she made the producers vet potential candidates for financial wellbeing and that she grilled the contestants, including Jef (whose picture is shown). The story also claims Emily is the only lead who was more or less frozen out Chris Harrison, who generally becomes good friends with all the leads. The claim made is Emily is the only lead who hasn't given CH her phone number. However, an anonymous source also somewhat contradicts that by saying Emily's been in touch with CH over twitter and sometimes texts him. The story also goes on to cast her as conceited and in this as a stepping stone for more fame. US says Emily is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Ali and Melissa by converting this gig into more TV gigs.
The Life & Style story claims that Emily's having 2nd thoughts about her fiance because she pretty much only knew him for 20 hours before he proposed. There's a quote from Jillian confirming the small amounts of time the lead gets to spend with the F1 pre-proposal. So, Brad's allegedly been telling people Emily's gotten back in touch with him and is leaning on him because he knows her so much better than any of the guys this season. The story makes mention of how Emily was really into multiple guys and there's a quote from the show from the FRC where she's afraid of making a mistake. There are insets on all f4 guys, mentioning Arie letting her down over Kalon and then the Cassie L thing, Chris being too immature, Sean being a model (with a quote from Ashley H about how models are a red flag, I wouldn't be surprised if that weren't even from this season), and Emily being disappointed to discover how strategic Jef was. The story also claims Jef had consulted with former contestants to come up with the strategy of being elusive and holding back kisses, and it worked.
[My comment: I find this a very surprising article considering L&S is supposed to be the friendly tabloid. Maybe something happened.]
OK has a 2 page spread on how Bach'ette producers are angling to bring Brad to the ATFR show for ratings sake, so he can apologize to Emily for his temper and how badly he handled their relationship. Emily is allegedly not for this idea and she just wants to move on, but the producers allegedly want the ratings gold.
Star claims Emily and CH have fallen for each other. [My comment: This is funny because of US's claim Emily was the only lead who froze out CH] There are quotes in the story from Vienna and Jesse Czinscak. Jesse notes the coincidence of when CH's marriage fell apart, and how CH has always been flirty with the girls, but especially close with Emily. I don't remember what Vienna said, but she gave some kind of confirming quote, and also said something to the effect that she thinks there'll be a triangle situation between Emily, her F1, and CH and it's something Vienna would definitely watch.
[My editorial comment: I'm gonna guess that the one thing everybody on this board will agree on is to roll our eyes at Vienna and Jesse over their comments.]
[Further editorial commentary: Nobody from the show appears to be interested in redeeming this season to the media. Probably not a good sign of faith in their lead/F1. Life & Style's turnaround is especially strange - it's supposed to be the sympathetic tabloid that gets the unofficially approved spin from the show. Or, it was for the last few Bach/ette seasons, at least until a couple weeks ago.]

Eliminated 'Bachelorette' Contestant Doug Clerget on Why He's Rooting
http://www.parade.com/celebrity/news/2012/06/28-bachelorette-doug-clerget-eliminated-contestant-emily.html
Earlier this week on The Bachelorette, Emily Maynard sent senstive single dad Doug Clerget home just shy of the hometown dates. Despite starting the season off strongly by getting the first impression rose, Clerget faded into the pack when he didn't move their physical relationship forward quickly enough. Unfortunately, his kiss was a date too late!
On Thursday, the Seattle-based bachelor spoke about his experience on the show. "Because I'm a single dad, I take things a little more slowly," Clerget said. "I didn't full comprehend the amount of chemistry [she had] with the guys...I probably should have been more on my toes with that."
Read on for his thoughts on the final four guys, seeing Kalon at the Men Tell All special, and whether or not he would consider being The Bachelor.
On his pick for Emily.
"Of the guys that are left: Sean I love, Arie I love, Jef is one of the most awesome guys I know. Chris, we had a bump in the road which took me by surprise. Gosh, it's a tough call between Arie, Jef, and Sean but I think because of our backgrounds, Sean and I were really close so probably Sean."
On Emily's comments that she felt he might be hiding something.
"That kind of hurt my feelings. I am a pretty on the surface guy and what you see is what you get. I think one of her comments was that my answers were too perfect or something. I did not know this about myself but I am pretty shy in front of the cameras and I think that comment came from me being shy in front of the cameras. A lot of my friends and family and even ex-girlfriends have watched the show and say 'that's just Doug.' I pretty much just put it out there I think."
On his elimination.
"I was really bummed out. I think, even if we didn't end up together in the end, I think she would have had a great experience here in Seattle. I have a really great network of friends and she could have met my son. I wasn't relieved at all. I was bummed. Even if we didn't end up together in the end, it would have been good to just further our friendship."
The drama with Chris.
"There were guys even younger than him. Alejandro was 23 I think and he was very mature. I think Chris took a comment that I made about Nate and his actions on his two-on-one date the wrong way. It's a tough situation to be in and I think he just took it the wrong way."
On Chris' mini-meltdown during the last episode.
"Her last kiss with Chris, it didn't seem like she was leaned in...Watching the last episode left me with some questions about Chris; there were some tough moments there. I think Chris is a great guy and his heart is definitely in the right place. I just don't know, it's a gut feeling [about whether Chris is ready to be a stepdad]."
The Arie-Cassie drama.
"Obviously Arie doesn't need my advice since he's doing a lot better than me! I think Emily was good to forgive him. Arie is a good guy and his dating Cassie was almost ten years ago. That's a long time ago. It was a tough place for Arie and Cassie to be in. I don’t think anyone was trying to be malicious. I think everything was okay."
On whether he would consider being the Bachelor.
"I'm probably so far down on the list but if it ever came up, I would definitely think about it. It was an amazing experience and I think Emily was fortunate with the guys she chose from and I would hope ABC would do just as good of a job choosing for me. I would definitely think about it."
On seeing Kalon at the Men Tell All special.
"If Kalon wants to talk about it at the Men Tell All, we can talk about it. I was disappointed he had made that comment. I wouldn't want to continue dating someone after they made a comment like that. Emily handled it on the spot. I think its' a dead issue but if he wants to talk about it, I'll definitely chat with him about it.

'The Bachelorette's Doug Clerget: I'm genuinely disappointed Emily Maynard didn't visit my hometown
By Elizabeth Kwiatkowski, 06/28/2012
http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/the-bachelorette-doug-clerget-im-genuinely-disappointed-emily-maynard-didnt-visit-my-hometown-13608.php
By Elizabeth Kwiatkowski, 06/28/2012
The Bachelorette bachelor Doug Clerget, a 33-year-old real estate agent from Seattle, WA, was eliminated during Monday night's The Bachelorette group date because Emily Maynard believed he waited too late in the competition to show her attention and affection.
Doug and The Bachelorette star had their signals completely crossed prior to his ouster, as Doug thought the couple was having an intimate moment outside a castle in Prague and then tried kissing her as a result while Emily was just trying to let him down gently and send him home. Doug came across very shy throughout the season and insisted he had a very traditional outlook on dating, but Emily realized she had been spending more time fighting for his heart than capturing it.
During a conference call with reporters on Thursday, Doug talked to Reality TV World about his The Bachelorette experience and emotional exit -- including what was actually going through his mind when Emily was giving him her elimination speech, whether he thought telling Emily their relationship would just be "starting out" following the show ruined his chances to end up with her, what he meant by saying his "girl radar" was totally broken, and how his body language throughout the show wasn't representative of his feelings for Emily.

More The Bachelorette 8 News
Below is the first portion of Doug's call. Check back with Reality TV World on Friday for the concluding portion.
Reality TV World: You seemed very shocked when you finally realized Emily was sending you home. What was going through your mind while she was talking and where did you think she was going with her speech? Did you think she was just mentioning things you two needed to work on or were you maybe zoned out a little bit because you were thinking about when would be the perfect time to kiss her?
Doug Clerget: Yeah Beth, that's actually a really great question and I appreciate it. I was thinking to myself, "I really probably should've tried kissing her." I thought she was saying, "Hey Doug, you gotta be a little more aggressive in terms of showing me you're interested in me," and I think Emily was such a sweetheart throughout the whole thing.
And just because I'm a single dad, I tend to take things a little more slowly. And so, I really just wanted to get to know Emily on a personal level and build a good friendship there. So she was talking to me and I thought the conversation was heading towards, "Come on, give me a kiss!" And then I really wasn't expecting to be sent home. I was hoping to get a hometown date, and so, I was kind of bummed out!
Reality TV World: When Emily asked you where you saw yourself at the end of your The Bachelorette journey, you said something like you and Emily would just be starting out. Do you think that's what ultimately made Emily's mind up? It seems like she wants to end the process engaged and get married shortly afterwards, but you made it sound like you guys would just be beginning your relationship and you wouldn't have proposed if she'd picked you. Can you elaborate on that a bit -- would you have proposed and what did you mean "starting out?"
Doug Clerget: Sure, another great question, and I appreciate that one too. When I said "starting out," you know, The Bachelorette experience is a great experience and it's one that I am so happy that I did. But it's one of those things where it's kind of surreal in that you're "dating" a girl who has been dating guys you've been hanging out with.
And you're having these experiences all around the world, which are completely amazing experiences, but you're not at home doing normal day-to-day things. I spend my days, you know, I get up, I workout at four in the morning, and then I get some work done, and I get my son up and off to school or off to camp, and then work throughout the day, and then get him home or off to practice.
So, you're not doing the normal life kind of stuff, and Emily's got Ricki and she has her normal routine. And so, the comment about "starting out" was in reference to starting to build a normal life. When you date somebody, you take two separate lives -- especially when you have kids involved -- and then you try to put those lives together. That's what I meant by "starting out." Does that make sense?
Reality TV World: Absolutely, so do you think the idea of a relationship just "starting out" was maybe a little bit of a red flag in Emily's mind? Do you think she was looking to get engaged right away?
Doug Clerget: I think Emily's heart is definitely in the right place and I don't know how the rest of it -- I've been watching and it'll be interesting to see how the hometown dates go. But I know she definitely wants to find the right person and I hope it wasn't a red flag. I was just trying to say that it would be an experience, coming home after the cameras were turned off and starting the day-to-day life of dating.
As I understand it, whoever Emily ends up with, they don't get to see each other for quite awhile after taping, between taping and the last show. So you've got some time in there, so I definitely didn't mean it to be a red flag. I was just trying to be very upfront about kind of where I saw things.
Reality TV World: In your final words, you said your "girl radar" was totally broken. What exactly did you mean by that? Were you saying you were kind of out of practice with the whole dating thing or were you referring to how you had misread the signals and attempted to kiss Emily when she was in the middle of trying to let you go or was it something else?
Doug Clerget: Yes. (Laughs) Thank you for bringing that up as if it wasn't painful enough to watch again. Oh my God! (Laughs)
Reality TV World: (Laughs) Sorry!
Doug Clerget: No, no it's okay! My friends will not leave me alone about that. I know that the comment about my "girl radar" being totally broken was kind of more of a comment in general just in the fact that Emily's sitting there saying, "I've been waiting for you to kind of show me that you're interested in me."
And I was thinking to myself, "I have been interested. I've been here away from my son and trying to spend as much time as I can." And kind of my whole life, any time I've dated, it's because a girl is finally like, "Doug, I'm interested in you. We should do something."
I for some reason, I don't know why, can just never -- I don't know why -- tell if a girl is interested in me or not. It's definitely something I should probably work on, because pretty much every girl I've ever dated has said, "Okay, we've been going out on dates," and then the girl will finally be like, "Okay, are you going to kiss me?"
And so, it was pretty much typical and I was bummed out because in the past, that's kind of worked out for me. And I've been like, "Yeah, totally, I just didn't want to -- who wants to kiss a girl that doesn't want you to kiss them?" And you can see, so I decided to take a risk in that situation, and that didn't work out well for me at all.
Reality TV World: Emily seemed to have a big issue with your body language and how you two wouldn't get close or hold each other when having conversations. Could you talk a little bit about your mannerisms on the show? Were you simply shy or was it a matter of being really nervous because so many cameras were around? Were you just trying really hard to be respectful but then maybe it backfired?
Doug Clerget: Well, no, I definitely tried to be respectful. I think that in terms of approaching the situation, I felt like Emily and I had a good connection from both being single parents, and so I felt like that was kind of like an immediate bond that we had. And then, a lot of guys I know were trying to be as physical as they could just in terms of kissing her every chance that they got.
I don't know. I just kind of thought, and again, I'm not a mindreader and my "girl radar" is broken -- I didn't know how much Emily wanted that to happen being a single mom. And so, I didn't want to be one more guy trying to kiss her when maybe she just wanted to get to know the guys. And so, I guess I just read that wrong.
Reality TV World: Similar to you, Jef Holm also decided to take his relationship with Emily slowly, as he waited to kiss her for awhile and didn't go out of his way to get her attention all the time. However, Emily said she liked the fact he kept her guessing and wondering and it seemed like it ultimately made her like him even more. Why do you think the strategy seemed to work out for Jef but unfortunately played out differently for you? What do you think the difference was?
Doug Clerget: You know, now that you bring that up, you're right! I hadn't thought about it from that regard before. I don't know why Jef got -- because mine really wasn't a strategy at all. I was just trying to get to know Emily in the time that I had with her and be respectful of her and just try to get to know her.
And so, maybe -- I definitely wasn't trying to keep her guessing. I was just trying to be nice. You know, Jef's a great guy. I have to think about that, because you're right! It worked out better for him than it did me. I don't think Jef had a strategy either. I think Jef was just trying to be himself too and just kind of read the situation and figure out what was going on like the rest of us.
That one stumps me a little. And actually though, Jef did eventually -- I'll tell you the difference between Jef and I -- Jef did eventually go and kiss her. They were on their one-on-one in London. He definitely went in and I did not.
I did not try to kiss Emily until she had made the decision to let me go, whereas Jef had his one-on-one, and he took advantage of that situation in London that maybe I didn't take advantage of in Bermuda. So, that was probably why it worked out better for him.
Reality TV World: You did get very emotional during your final words. So just to clarify, did you get upset because obviously rejection just hurts, was it because you didn't find love in general or was it because you didn't find love with Emily specifically?
Doug Clerget: Oh my gosh, that's a long -- Do you want the long answer to that one?
Reality TV World: (Laughs) Whatever it takes for you to answer it the best you can, I guess!
Doug Clerget: Okay, so being on the show was an amazing experience. What a life-changing, very cool thing to do. I was genuinely disappointed that I didn't get the opportunity to have a one-on-one date with Emily [in my hometown].
I thought to myself, "Even if this isn't the girl for me, she should be able to come home and have a one-on-one date with me just to see how I live my life and get to meet Austin and my family and friends."
So, that was disappointing, but also from the aspect of, yeah. As a single dad, a full-time single dad, it'd be nice to find some companionship. So that was, just in general, that would be nice. And then, there was a lot of missing my son. It was a long experience and so I was definitely missing my son.
And then candidly, it didn't get talked about a lot, but I don't know how many of you guys know this, my grandfather -- who was an amazing man and adopted my sister and I when we were children -- had passed away right before I went on the show.
And so, I had to give his eulogy, get my son down to California and I just hadn't had a chance to grieve at all. So, there was a lot of thinking about him and his life -- that came up in my emotions. So, I don't think I've cried since '83, but I cried the last two weeks on the show. Again, my friends are giving me an immense amount of grief over that. He had a long, wonderful life. So that was a good thing!
Above is the first portion of Doug's call. Check back with Reality TV World on Friday for the concluding portion.

On Monday’s episode of The Bachelorette, we’ll see Emily travel to the hometowns of her four remaining suitors. Below is a clip of her visit to St. George, Utah, with growing fan favorite — or is he just mine? — Jef. Jef has made it clear that he’ll break up with a woman if his parents don’t think she’s a good match for him. Luckily, they are still rather vaguely “committed to some stuff” in South Carolina and won’t be at the family ranch. Instead, she meets Jef’s siblings and worries that they won’t like her because Jef refuses to touch her once they enter the gate. Watch a clip below.
We suspect this date might have a happy ending. According to an ABC press release, “Jef has one more surprise for Emily — and it’s one of the most romantic hometown moments in Bachelorette history.” Fingers crossed, Jef!
