All the details of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring
When your friend gets engaged, even if she’s not marrying the fifth in line to the throne, it’s quite exciting to see her ring. But when that ring is given by a literal prince? And if that prince is everyone’s favourite naughty ginger Prince Harry? Well, that’s just too exciting for words. After all, we bloody love a royal wedding. (We’re also getting a royal baby in the same couple of months, they’re spoiling us). So, all the 411 on Meghan Markle’s engagement ring. The band is made of gold and the ring was made by Cleave and Company, Court Jewellers and Medallists to Her Majesty The Queen. Prince Harry designed it himself, working with them. Jeweller David Law told Metro.co.uk that the ring has a ‘2.5ct centre cushion cut diamond incorporating two side diamonds from his late mother Princess Diana with the stones set in white gold and the band in yellow gold.’ He also explains what sort of cost you’d be looking at here, saying ‘A typical ring of this size would generally start at around £50,000.’ Editor of Retail Jeweller, Ruth Faulkner offers a different opinion, suggesting that the ring is actually 3.5ct. She told Metro.co.uk ‘The retail value of a ring like this would be dependent on the colour and clarity of the diamonds, which it is impossible to ascertain from an image. ‘As a very rough estimate, you would ordinarily be looking at around at least £100k-£150k. However, this isn’t an ordinary ring and the diamonds on either side are said to have belonged to Princess Diana which makes this ring priceless and virtually impossible to give a true value.’ (And you can’t even get a text back). It’s a trio of diamonds with one larger central stone and two smaller stones framing it. The two smaller stones come from Harry’s late mother Princess Diana’s personal collection and the main central stone is from Botswanna, a place where Harry and Meghan have spent together.
Resetting a ring using the original stones but creating a different design is quite common, especially in aristocratic families where jewellery is handed down from generation to generation. Debretts recommend it as a great way of using a family ring without having to compromise on your own personal style. Interestingly Kate Middleton did not have a redesigned ring made up from stones belonging to Princess Diana but instead opted to keep it intact. Talking of the comparison between KMid and Meghan, how do the two rings compare? Ruth Faulkner told Metro.co.uk: ‘The Duchess of Cambridge’s ring, which consists of 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a 12ct oval sapphire, was at the time of her engagement, considered to be fairly unusual and reminiscent of a very traditional style of ring from a bygone era. However, since her engagement to the Duke of Cambridge, the popularity of such styles increased and many jewellers reported seeing a spike in sales of sapphire engagement rings around the time as a result. ‘That said though, white diamonds remain the centre stone of choice for most engagement rings, so in that respect Meghan’s ring could be considered more traditional.
Trilogy (or three stone) rings like Meghan’s, while not unusual, are not the most common choice of setting. The vast majority of brides tend to opt for either a single stone solitaire or, more recently, a large number have favoured halo styles. I am sure though, as a result of today’s Royal engagement, many more will now consider trilogy styles.’ It will be interesting to see, in a few months’ time, whether Meghan opts to continue wearing her engagement ring after marriage, putting it together in a stack with her wedding ring, or moves it to her left hand. Both are equally valid, though it’s less traditional to wear both rings together. Jewellery designer Gee Woods commented on the design, telling Metro.co.uk: ‘The design is pretty popular as more people seem to be moving away from the more traditional solitaire but still want something classic. The gold band is a lovely touch and again lots of customers are asking for yellow gold bands as I think it warms up a ring.’
However Gee, who creates bespoke jewellery, cautions that the future groom designing the ring all by himself isn’t always a rock solid bet, saying: ‘Sometimes it’s just the man who comes and designs it before proposing but more and more often the proposal is done before and then the couple both design the ring – definitely a safer move!’ Given that everything the Duchess of Cambridge touches flies off the shelves, we imagine Meghan is going to be a trend setter too (in fact, the Canadian website behind the white coat Meghan wore, linethelabel.com, crashed just after her appearance with the volume of new traffic). Could this design see a return to the popularity of gold over platinum for engagement rings? Quite possibly. But if her ring has caused this much a stir, imagine what her dress is going to do.

Sprite wrote:@GuardianAngel That is a pretty ring. Classic and elegant. Much more my taste than the gaudy monstrosities Neil Lane usually presents. Congrats to them. I can't wait to see what she decides to wear for the wedding.
Kashathediva wrote:IMO it is lovely and incorporates part of history and the lovely momma Diana.
GuardianAngel wrote:IA love the ring. The article makes a good point on how preferences change according to the Royals fashion sense. Maybe Neil Lane has stiff competition now or he'll start designing similar rings.
It's much more classic IMo that will never go out of style. The fact that it has diamonds from Princess Diana's broach is such a beautiful touch. Can you imagine? I've watched a couple of interviews, she's seems like a lovely person.
I guess no more shenanigans from Prince Harry, which over the years I always got a kick out of.
If there is enough interest I can create a separate thread. I'll probably be posting a lot of info as I come across it.
Kashathediva wrote:I think he is far enough down the family line shenanigans may still be in store, if not too outlandish. I think his good nature and good heart out ranks all. He is my favorite royal.

I love how they are constantly holding hands. Even during the walk through the gardens, they never let go of each other. Something that is not seen very often with the Royals.
IA @Kashathediva he is getting further down the line, and will drop one more notch when the next baby arrives. I always liked his crazy fun self. I always said he's just having fun because he knows he'll never have to be the King.
smartcat wrote:Some of his younger antics were not in good taste BUT and it's a big but he certainly has matured into a giving kind man. She's a beautiful remarkable young woman,
Good choice Harry! I think they are an adorable couple and would love to have a separate thread for them
Right now I'm lapping up all the joy and fun and differences of this very modern young couple.
Good for them, I wish them every success and can't wait to read everything I can about them and the future festivities.

LONDON -- Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will marry on May 19 in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace announced Friday.
The couple have chosen a springtime Saturday for their wedding and a venue that holds a central place in the history of the royal family.
Windsor Castle, west of London, is one of Queen Elizabeth II's main residences. The 15th-century chapel is as historic but more intimate than Westminster Abbey, where Harry's older brother William married Kate Middleton in 2011.
His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle will marry on 19th May 2018.

The press in the UK is being horrid, though, they're doing the most to tear her down. I hope she's following her own decision to not read anything written about her, it's just noise.

Berthelsen said the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will host Markle and Prince Harry in their home on the Sandringham estate, located in Norfolk, during the holidays.
On Christmas Eve, Markle can expect to participate in a gift exchange where the parcels are laid out on a large dining room table in order of precedence, Berthelsen said. Following that, the family will sit down to a large dinner.
On Christmas day itself, Berthelsen said there is more of a focus on the holiday’s religious aspect and Markle will join the family in attending a morning church service. In the afternoon, the Royal Family will gather to watch the Queen’s annual televised Christmas message where he expects the sovereign to speak about the meaning of the holiday, global events and family milestones, such as the Duke of Edinburgh retiring from public life.
Berthelsen said Christmas will be a great opportunity for Markle to get to know the family she will marry into next spring.
“They’re very happy,” he said. “Everyone wants to meet her.”
