IMO They might not know who they'll pick in the end but most of them have their top 3-4 decided by the end of night 1. Many of them have said so post season. Ofcourse, there could be additions and subtractions to that list based on how the season goes but TPTB are aware of everything. The lead spends every single minute when they are not on dates with their producer and they know the right questions to ask IMO. As for knowing it from one conversation, these people get engaged to someone they have spent a collective 48-72 hours with at the end. It's the environment. There isn't enough time so in most cases, whoever stands out early will most likely be the one at the end unless something crazy happens along the way.

So you can tell more or less who weee the leads top picks. Sometimes, those don't stay tiop picks and there is a reshuffle.
The other key position is the first SD of the season. That IMO is a combo of lead choice plus producer choice. Tptb cannot afford for the first SD to fail. So they pick a great contestant  who has either gone on to F2 and sometimes as future lead. This is a position that has almost of not more pressure on themselves because they have a great FD snd then the doubts and insecurities creep in during the season while other relationships develop. Besides this, the FIR has a lot of challenges during the season.
In recent years the FIR curse has been broken by Roberto Shawn Jordan.
Till now the seasons FD is still shaky, maybe benF season had Courtney in that slot ? Can't remember.
Just imo and from what we have discussed over the years.
