I thought that picture of him in the red outfit looked very photoshopped. His head looks like it's attached to a different body.

Even if does well, viewers forget by the end of the show.

Actually, it might work out well in Nick's case coz he won't be watching the other performances first and getting nervous. Also, that spot on a theme night is good IMO coz if it goes well, audience might remember it and it won't be lost amidst all the theatrics.

I understand that there's a danger viewers might forget.... but don't they usually put one of the better dances first, or else they run the risk that the energy for the whole show will be off? Or am I thinking of Idol??

It's not a picture though. It's a still from a Snapchat that clearly showed him in movement, in the costume.

Going first won't be too much of a problem with voting because most people vote throughout the show, since they've been allowed to. Going first can be tough though based on one, the judges sometimes underscoring so as to not start the night too high and two some other behind the scenes stuff I learned throughout the years. Mark Ballas, former Pro, said in an interview once that before the dances start, there's a clicking sound to signal to the pairing when the package is over and the music is about to start and they have to start dancing.

When a couple goes first, they often have to contend with the crowd still screaming and excited from the producer hyping the crowd before they go live. And so sometimes the pairings don't hear the clicks and they don't start when they should. And of course a false start can put the celebrity off and then they're behind the music, etc. Now just to be clear, this is the worse case scenario. Plenty of pairings go first and kill the performance.

I think since Nick is going first, the judges won't give him harsh feedback since he is going first and they don't have any other dances to compare with.

I changed my mind.  I now think the red outfit looks like "The Mad Hatter" (minus the hat but plus Tim Burton) at the tea party in "Alice in Wonderland".
Best be showtime soon as my imagination is running wild.
