You know what I keep thinking about? I wonder if it is available to be viewed anywhere. I think early in the show (maybe the first episode, before the M&G), Chris is shown on his cellphone excitedly telling his mom "It's Des!" It showed that she is who he was hoping would be the lead. It gives me goosies just remembering that!
I just found it. It’s all in the HTD episode. His mom tells Des the story at dinner, in tears:

He let me know the night before he left….. what do I think...
I said: What do you want?
And he goes: If it’s Des, that’s what I want.
And he texted me at the airport: Mom, it’s Des! I just found out.

And then, in an interview:
If you truly love your children, you want the best for them, and I liked what I saw. Good guy, good girl. Put together, magic! What you gonna do?

Magic indeed!
