Cameron keeps getting his heart broken
21 SEP 2016

Fireman Cameron reveals how he’s been unlucky in love.

He's had three serious relationships, but has been dumped every time. Now, 26-year-old Cameron is hoping his luck will change.

“I meet someone and fall pretty quickly,” Cameron admits, adding that he had his first serious partner when he was just a teen.

“There was the teenage relationship that went for two-and-a-half years,” he says.

“I came out of that, and about five months later, I was in a three-and-a-half-year relationship.

"Then, about nine months after that, I was in a three-year relationship.”

Having lived with his last two girlfriends, the split-ups were especially hard. Cameron, who’s been single for a year-and-a-half, says he needed time on his own.

“After my last ex, I came out of it and thought, ‘Right, I want to be single for a while,” he explains.

“You learn to appreciate doing your own thing.” Cameron says he tends to be friends with all his exes. And, after so much heartache, he now has his break-up routine down pat.

“After break-ups, I eat a lot of Red Rooster,” he says. “I go through phases. So, I’ve got my takeaway food phase, then my gym phase.”

Nice interview

The Bachelorette contestant Cameron is a firefighter, a Disney fan and incredibly handsome to look at — is it any wonder he's one of our front runners already? We had lunch with Cam in Sydney today (his first proper visit to the city!) and we quickly discovered he is as lovely on the inside as he is on the outside. He's like a real-life Prince Charming and we loved getting to know him a little bit. Scroll for the full interview!

POPSUGAR Australia: Can you tell us why you decided to sign up to the show?

Cameron: To be honest, I was out with the boys and someone approached and said, "Would you like to do this?" At the time, it was a no, I didn't think it was for me. She said, "Why not? You're single. Are you open to the idea of love and being with someone?" I said yes. Then she goes: "What a cool way to do it and create an adventure, why wouldn't you do it?" Then I sort of said, why not? Gave my details and from there it snowballed and ended up happening.

PS: Were you worried about being on TV and being famous?

Cameron: I didn't really think about it a whole lot. You do have to sort of weigh it up and I sat down with my family and said it was an option. We all went through the pros and cons, because it wouldn't be the same and things couldn't be the same for a while. That was a pretty big drawback, to be honest, but I thought it'd be a lot of fun and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I've been going through this huge 'yes' thing these past few years — just saying yes to things and then figuring out later whether it was a good idea or not.

PS: You're a firefighter — did you have to take leave or leave your job?

Cameron: I had leave allocated, but I needed to extend it. I got some mates to cover shifts and they also were really good and extended my leave slightly. I managed to do the whole thing in my leave break.

PS: Last season with The Bachelor, a few of the girls left their jobs and were out in a week. It is a once in a lifetime situation, but you really need to weigh up whether it's going to change your life that much.

Cameron: If I had to leave my job, I probably wouldn't have done it. But the fact that I took my leave and it all worked out, the pros are far greater than the cons.

PS: What did you think of Georgia Love when you met her? She's very striking and beautiful.

Cameron: She is, and she's even better when she has all the lights on her and you're so nervous! [Laughs] I don't know, people ask me, "What were you thinking when you got out and saw her?" I couldn't even tell you. I basically mind-blanked from the limo to the front door — I'm pretty sure I was a blubbering mess, I couldn't even talk!

PS: You did well!

Cameron: Oh, watching back, I was amazed the words even came out! [Laughs] I couldn't even tell you what I said or what happened. I had a plan in my head, and as soon as that didn't go to plan, for the first 10 seconds, I just gave up and just had no idea. The poor thing was trying to have a conversation and I couldn't even talk.

PS: She did well, but I feel like all the guys did really well too! No one seemed really nervous . . . Maybe Ben seemed nervous, because he said so.

Cameron: Ben was nervous — we were all nervous! I could barely talk. From my memory, it was nothing like what it actually was. Like, "I'm a firefighter? I think? Yes?" [Laughs] Oh God, she asked something. I think she said, "What's your name?" So I'm surprised — it came out better than I thought [laughs].

PS: It must be a relief to watch it back, because there's such a long time between filming.

Cameron: Ah, a relief and . . . I mean, I watched it with my mum the first time and we were both freaking out. We were both pacing and everyone else was just having a great time. I was like, "I've got to go to work tomorrow, please don't be too bad."

PS: At this point in the show, you're still in and seem to be doing really well. What are your feelings for Georgia? Did you have an instant spark with her?

Cameron: No, you're in a bit of awe at the start. And once you put that aside a bit, I had a great time with her every time I saw her — we had a great laugh and a chat and really connected about a lot of things. But at the same time, you want to have something deep that you have in common or both share, or a same approach to things. At this point in the show, we're having a great time and I really enjoy spending time with her — I want to spend more time with her, but I need something that we can click together with, or have a moment or something. I think that's what I'm waiting for.

PS: Well you haven't really had . . .

Cameron: Serious time? Yeah, I mean I had the photo shoot . . . But you come down, you're standing there and there's still a photographer telling you what to do and how to do it. You can't really talk about family or why she's there.

PS: How did you find that shoot? It was so funny! When we got sent those pictures by Harlequin, the book publisher, we were just killing ourselves laughing.

Cameron: [Laughs] The hot and steamy was the plan for the day, and I struggled really badly to be hot and steamy. I walked away and I think I was like, the poor thing is so stunning, you're so close and I so nervous, it was like: "Oh my God, my breath — does it smell? I was so lucky I had a chewy before this!" You're closing your eyes and then like, oh God, what if her eyes are open and she's pulled away and I'm just randomly holding this pose? So I'd open my eyes and I didn't realise her eyes were still closed, so now I look weird because I'm opening my eyes and starting to close them again. And then they wanted our eyes open — staring into each other's eyes, and because you're so close, her eyes sort of go into a Cyclops. They sort of blurred together and made a Cyclops eye [laughs]!

PS: LOL. It's like that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez moment. Who at this point are threats to you?

Cameron: At this stage, because I room with him, Lee — he's in my room and I know him well. Matty J is one of the funniest, nicest and down-to-earth guys. Courtney too, because he had the first impression rose and is always so cool, calm and collected. He's had shows before so the cameras didn't faze him. We were horrible! All the boys were intimidating, I was really intimidated at the start. You walk into a room and these guys are the most impressive guys you've seen as a group. You're kind of walking around going, crap, I won't be here long, enjoy it while it lasts!

PS: It's so nice to hear that men have their insecurities too.

Cameron: Yeah, definitely! I sat there and was like, "You've got to be kidding me." I looked at the guys last year and it was an awesome group of guys, their personalities were amazing. But I walked in and I was like, are these guys all male models? Am I in the wrong place — this is a joke!

PS: You were Mr May in the fireman calendar — can you tell me how you got involved in that?

Cameron: [Laughs] It's kind of an initiation thing for us. If you're a young firefighter and you're single, the boys in your station will just push you to do it. Especially if you're semi-fit, there's no better motivation to get really fit. And it's all for charity — it's one of our big nights. For the firefighters, we very rarely get together as a group. There's the union ball, the firefighter ball and calendar launch, and they're the only chances we get to go as a group, have a drink together and catch up with each other. If you know someone in it, it's even better, so we always try and make our mates to do it so we can laugh at them and watch them dance.

PS: You've got to have balls to do that. That's terrifying.

Cameron: I was drunk! [Laughs] I was freaking out like, it won't be too bad, and they're going, "How well do you know your dance, because you won't be able to hear the music!"

PS: When was this?

Cameron: October last year? It still haunts me! But it's one of those things, you're so nervous and at the start you walk out and get introduced, and they're like: "Cameron!" Everyone's cheering and you're like, "Hey, hey!" Then you do a group dance and you're stripping things off, and because you're with a group of guys, it's just a cracker — it's a lot of fun.

PS: Can you tell us about today's story that Rhys is still married?

Cameron: I can't tell you much about it, honestly! I would If I could, but it's not my place to comment on. I don't really know much about it. I heard whispers, but it's not something I ever spoke to Rhys about.

PS: Can you tell us what Rhys is like? I'mm not quite sure yet . . .

Cameron: I really like Rhys, I got along well with him. He's not that bad, I think he's a bit of a lone wolf and doesn't do well in large groups. Especially when you're in a house full of guys, and most are the alphas of their groups — they all come from different walks of life. So you throw them all together and we're just a bunch of lads doing everything together. I think Rhys struggled to get involved with the banter and that sort of thing.

PS: Is he more of an introvert?

Cameron: Yeah, he's more of an introvert and an intellectual. He likes to do his own thing and read a book in a corner, whereas we'd all be having beers and playing poker.

PS: Who's your best mate in the house?

Cameron: Lee's my best mate, yeah. He's great, he's even better in real life.

PS: I love his dad jokes so much — it's sickening.

Cameron: They don't stop! It gets better. Lee's puns — you kind of have a laugh, and then he keeps going and you have another laugh. Three weeks later, we're like, "Come on Lee, buddy, no more!" And someone will say something silly like, "Look, there's a leaf over there!" And he'll make some dad joke and everyone's like, "Come on, Lee." It's even worse when Georgia's around and there's a group date, because Georgia starts joining in as well. You've set her off again and the two will just be going at it [laughs].

PS: Is there a lot of rivalry between Rhys and Sam or is it more for the camera?

Cameron: There was a bit. Sammy is brilliant because he calls things as he sees it, that's one of his best traits — he'll just go through and calls it like he sees it. So if Rhys was being weird, I'll just bite my tongue and go, oh he's just being Rhys. He'll just be like, "You're being weird! What are you doing?" That's Sammy — he does everything with a smirk, I think, which is awesome. That's why he's so much fun and the boys loved him — he calls it as he sees it, he's hilarious and does it with a smile.

PS: Do you really like Disney?

Cameron: Yeah, I love Disney. It's one of those guilty pleasures. When I'm hungover on the couch, I'll probably stick a Disney film on.

PS: Do you have a favourite?

Cameron: I do love Aladdin. But a lot of the classics — Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast. Belle's probably my favourite princess. [Laughs] I've got to stop saying this too much! But yeah, I love Disney. I think I spoke to Georgia about it like, why Disney? Now as an adult, I'm really glad [I watched them]. I have a gift that I give to all my family and friends, and my friends who have children. I get a hard drive with all the Disney movies on there and I label it "Instant Childhood" and give it to them. It's one of those things — it teaches boys how to treat a girl and girls how to be treated. You just give it to them as a present — it's a gift for all my mates' kids. I'm a dork — I'm a big dork! It's a good gift to give someone.

PS: Do you have sisters?

Cameron: I have an older sister.

PS: I feel like men with older sisters are good, because their sister usually pulls them into line.

Cameron: And if you ever see them in tears for things . . . And I've got a younger brother as well.

PS: So do you think Georgia Love is the kind of woman you could fall in love with at this point?

Cameron: Yeah definitely. Initially, I was so intimidated because she is so professional and spoke so well, especially when I could barely string a sentence together. I was like, "Wow, she's so professional, I'm not sure how I can keep up with this. I'm such a dork — I don't even know how I'm talking now!" Then you realise she's less of a professional woman that has laughs every now and then, she's more of a laid-back chick that laughs a lot and has a lot of fun, and when she needs to be, she's professional. I think that's the cool part about her, she'll be the chick that jumps on the table behind the scenes and raps a song. "Greased Lightning" will come on and she will get us all into Grease, she quotes Anchorman, she quotes Monty Python — she's a cool chick.

PS: Are you still 26?

Cameron: Yeah, 26.

PS: And you do feel ready to settle down?

Cameron: Being in the house is interesting, because as soon as I found out I was the baby — we worked it out early on, I was like, "Oh God, am I going to be the child in the house? Like the one that shouldn't be here?" And I found as it went on a bit, emotionally I was more mature than half of them there. I found I wasn't as far behind everyone as I thought I would be.

I honestly don't think that Cameron makes it too far based on the fact he's doing the media rounds now question

I am not sure how far Cam makes it... maybe F6/F5 or maybe F4? Not not sure.

He's done quite a bit of media and interviews which definitely seems odd especially since the questions, imo, seem more like he is single, imo, and getting media out there seems to make him seem more like he is single and ready to mingle (as does his SM activity, imo).

Part of me wonders if Cam is not in F4 and doesn't go far if maybe he is in the running for next Bachelor and that's why he is doing lots of media interviews now to get more people behind him especially if he is not in F3 then more media would be needed I'd think to build a case for him to be next lead since he won't get as much screentime?

question

Cam must have a thing for blondes.

He has been liking pics of blondes since the show aired and now liking one of a blonde in a bikini on a motorbike.

He also followed Nikki from Richie's season and likes Nikki's posts on IG and she is blonde so thinking that blonde may be Cam's type giggling

Cam's personality reminds me so much of Art Green. Just his mannerisms and the way he talks even reminds me of Art.

Cam his first SD

Cameron explained in his piece to camera: 'The boys have had a running joke that I am in the friend zone and it all started back when the first date.

He later added: 'I can make friends pretty easily and I'm hoping I haven't accidentally made friends with someone I didn't want to make friends with.'

Before heading out on their date, Georgia opened up about her fear of her and Cameron becoming 'friend zoned'.

'The second I saw Cam walk up those steps on the arrival night, I was like, "Whoo!" He's a tall, incredibly good-looking guy,' she gloated.

'We had this real chemistry. But then since then, it's kind of just plateaued a little bit and I'm worried that it could be heading towards the friend zone.'

She told him: 'You've got an awful lot of the qualities that I look for in someone and that I want in a partner. So I don't see you in the friend zone and I hope you don't feel the same way.'
He replied with a big smile: 'No, I don't at all and I could have told you the moment I walked in today and the way I still get nervous around you.
'No, it's really not a friend thing for me and hasn't been at all.'

Following their conversation, they shared a very passionate kiss, to which Georgia blushed: 'I felt massive butterflies. That spark I worried might not be there, it's definitely there.
'It was a really, really good kiss. I can very easily see myself falling in love with Cam.'
